Default Waxed cotton clothing / fabrics - it's my newest obsession

I have an old Carhartt flannel-lined denim shirt jacket that I gave to my dad about 20 years ago. He wore it all the time, and I've worn it too. It's in really good condition considering, because 20 years ago it mattered to make really good stuff I guess. Anyhoo

I got a bar of wax and watched a few videos. It turns out I need 2 and am waiting for another other one. I spent WAY more time that the videos showed working the wax into the fabric because wanted the fabric more supple, so I used a lot of wax and it took me about 3 hours. The denim gets supple like thin leather, The first hour was me learning WTF I was doing though. Then it was like meditating. I get like this working on cars too, it it's not a job I HAVE to do.

One picture is after washing it really well, the other is today after curing a day, the left side is done. I should be done next week. I have a vintage style denim safety razor case I am going to wax as well. I will probably get a pair of double-knee duck cotton pants and wax them, it will me cool, durable, sustainable (a coat can last a lifetime it you maintain it and don't.)

I missed an important part of the post

Yeah, but so long as you don't.

Very cool. I only know of waxed cotton from motorcycle gear. It greatly improves the durability to survive a slide. I assume you lose breathability, so you wouldn't want to go 9 innings against the Red Sox with a waxed Yankees uniform, right?

Is it just paraffin wax or is there a particular kind that you need?

I know exactly what you mean about it being therapeutic.

I have a leather coat I've had for 30+ years. But it never gets cold here, so about the only time I wear it is on biz travel if I happen to go to Canada during the Winter, which I try to avoid.

A few years ago I got it out and decided it needed some love. I got some leather conditioner and started rubbing that on. It was like putting lotion on dry skin. It was just soaking into the leather.

I think I applied a heavy coat of conditioner, wore it on a trip for a week, and then gave it another treatment upon my return.

I've made it an annual ritual, even if I don't wear it.

Yea I love waxed cotton and leather. My Barbour and Filson waxed cotton jackets will outlive me. Also agree it's therapeutic to clean and condition jackets, boots, belts, and leather watch straps.

I can't believe I left this part out. I've been using Otter Wax leather care for years, and when I went to order it, I got curious about the fabric wax and then remembered the coat,

Updated the OP. Otter Wax from Portland. There is a shop there that I forgot about when I was driving up there in the fall

I also used the leather conditioner and boot wax on work gloves

The right pair are from Wells Lamont from hardware for trail maintenance and I keep them in my SAR go pack.

I have a friend that has had a Barbour from Orvis for 30 years.

Lighter treatments are breathable too, but I doubt mine will breathe much.

That's the only thing that bothers me about it. I love the idea of natural, renewable waterproofing, but not how it makes the jacket pretty much impermeable to air.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a leather blazer that I have had for probably 20 years. I generally apply a coat of bootguard to it every year. It's beeswax, lanolin and a mix of oils. It's versatile, works on anything leather and it doesn't feel waxy when you're done. It just soaks right into the leather and it definitely waterproofs it. The down side is that my dogs are fascinated in a dangerous way with the finished products.

i picked up a waxed canvas jacket from Surly about seven years ago. got fat during covid and couldn't zip the ****ing thing... finally dropped enough weight where i can get it zipped again. it's tight but still trying to drop a couple more pounds. love this thing but the "spandex" area in the hands/sleeves is wearing through. probably the warmest "single layer" jacket i've ever owned.

The OR ones are new. I worked in my garden twice with them, and wore them walking around and hiking some.

Carhartt makes durable work clothes, but like you say, they have all this crappy product with the name somewhere on it at department stores, and the quality is really only there in the hardcore work clothes. It's a lot like when hip-hop required you wear a puffy expedition weight down jacket in the summer.

In Michigan, it you did labor for work, you got Carhartt since like 1940.

lol, I was going to write about it, but the googles found me this. I didn't know it was literally the same people with Carhartt pants. It also explains why vintage ones are $150 on e-bay. God damn it. First grunge ruined my flannel shirt and jeans thing I had done from 1976, and now this! I didn't realize it was ever a hop-hop thing. People I knew built houses and cars and dug holes.

The Evolution of Carhartt Work Pants
Team DDV - March 15, 2022
Sean Wotherspoon, Travis Scott and Kanye love them: We're talking about Carhartt Work Pants and the most coveted model of them - the Double Knee Pants, which can even withstand twice as much thanks to a reinforced knee area. How the parts made it from construction worker legs to the catwalks of this world? We'll tell you!

Carhartt Double Knee Pants: So sind sie gemacht

From Michigan to the world
Before we get to the reasons why (worn-out) Carhartt Pants are so sought after, let's take a trip back in time to Michigan in the 19th century: Since 1889, Carhartt has been reliably supplying America's workers from here with robust workwear in the typical beige and brown - at first primarily for railroad workers, but construction workers and farmers have also sworn by the traditional brand for decades now.

Carhartt-Werbung aus den frühen Tagen der Marke

Advertising from the early days of Carhartt

Carhartt in the 90s
In the 90s, it was American East Coast rappers who took Carhartt from the hardware store to the streets. The explanation for Carhartt's unexpected new buyer base back then is simple: the pants and jackets were comparatively cheap to get. Thanks to its ties to the working class, the brand stood for "rough, rugged and raw" like no other. And: The winters in New York City and Co. are damn cold - which you can survive better in robust Carhartt pants than in windy jeans.
Prince Paul (Gravediggaz) und Shyheim The Rugged Child

Prince Paul (left) and Shyheim (right) wearing Carhartt in the 90s

Bigger is better
Carhartt benefited from another trend in the 90s rather by chance: back then, skaters and hip hoppers started wearing their clothes bigger and bigger for the first time - among other things, because bigger clothes offer more room to move for tricks (and more storage space). And where could you find size XXXXL even back then, before there were streetwear labels to match? Yep, in the hardware store at Carhartt, where plus sizes were available quite regularly, not paying attention to the skinny trend of the fashion industry.

Carhartt becomes Carhartt WIP (and yet not)
Since the late 90s, Carhartt's history has been split in two: The workwear line still functions as "Carhartt" in the USA and the DIY stores of this world. But if you go to a Carhartt store in the metropolises of this world, you shop at "Carhartt WIP" (Carhartt Work in Progress). The latter is a licensee of Carhartt and produces modern reinterpretations with the logo of the brand, which focus more on style than on fitness for work. In short: Carhartt WIP has the more current cuts. More robust, often of higher quality and more durable are the pieces from the "real" Carhartt.

The big "C": Things go in circles
But back to the present, where Kanye West, among others, celebrates the Double Knee Pants - gladly even in a worn-out state, and even better with splashes of color on the fabric. But how does a Kanye, who just a few years ago wore sinfully expensive leather jogging pants, come up with this style?

Kanye West Style Entwicklung Luxus zu Workwear

Kanye West: Once Luxury, today Workwear

Probably because fashion has always lived on opposites: After high fashion comes workwear. After bling bling come holes and stains. And after "everyone with a full bank account wears the same expensive jeans that no one will care about next season" comes... what? Individuality and longevity. Of course, this is where Carhartt comes into play again: Double Knee Pants are manufactured to such a high standard precisely so that they last as long as possible - away from trends and even if you work in them, skate or simply like to have something from your clothes for a long time.

The fact that you can often see that the pants have been toiled in makes them even better for us: the more worn-out, the more character each pair of pants has - because every hole and every splash of color is unique. Basically the literal icing on the cake And psst: In an already-worn state, the pants are also instantly comfortable to wear!

nope. they did the first run in just black in '14, and then brought back in '16 with green and brown. i tried to get my hands on a brown one after getting my green one but they were not produced in vast quantities.

Making use of a double post. While not waxed I have a Kuhl lined Burr jacket. Not waxed but a super tight weave that sheds water well, breathes, and is much warmer than I had expected. It also had articulated shoulders and elbows which is really nice.

Look for full grain leather. The stuff you find in department stores, very likely is not. It's usually genuine leather which is **** tier.

An option might be to check etsy. Hell you can buy the materials and make your own.

This. If you can't look at it and tell it's 3/16" thick solid leather strap, it's crap.

If it's got stiches in it for anything other than the buckle, avoid.
