Default anyone who is in north dallas needs to drop cable and switch to FIOS for internet!

15/2 for $44.95 FTW! This service is amazing! This is just a public service announcement for anyone who has been stuck paying $50+ for comcast (now time warner) for the last 4 or 5 years.

For those who dont know FIOS, is internet over fiber optics provided by Verizon. You do not need to have your phone service from Verizon, they just need to service your area.

If 15/2 is more speed than you need, they also have a 5/2 package for $29.99. Installation is only $19.99, and will include wiring up one of your rooms with an ethernet jack, and they provide a wireless router free of charge. I believe it is a 1 year contract...but at this price, who is ever going to want to leave?

Funny story...after I signed up for FIOS on their website, 1 or 2 days later I get a call from Time Warner telling me that they were going to drop my rates to $29.99/month + raise my speeds to 6mbit/384kbps. THEN, later that day, a service rep from Time Warner shows up at my house and did the exact same thing. I think Time Warner has people driving around the neighborhood looking to see which houses are being prepared for a fiber install from Verizon.

They can also do FIOS TV which is cheaper than cable from time warner, and have this super-DVR if you want to call it. You record the show on 1 DVR, but then you can watch the show you recorded on ANY of the other tvs which have just the regular cable box (non-DVR).

Anyways....just wanted to give you all a headsup...as I am extremely happy with FIOS

The moment they begin offering FIOS in McKinney, I'm there! My father in law has FIOS and I've been tempted to put a machine out at his house for my bittorrent work...

If its available in Allen, I'm all over it.

My ftp server would love a 2 up connection.. So would all the pron gatherers I know

Ever since comcast had that minor catastrophe up here last week, my speeds have had teh suck.

Fach.

Verizon doesn't recognize my home phone, cell phone or address..

I guess I have to call them. Strike one

FIOS orders only taken M-F. Strike two

Got my FIOS installed yesterday

They came around my apartment complex getting the fiber optic lines set up a few months ago and starting doing installations in the past week or two.

Can't get FIOS TV though Something about Comcast having exclusive rights or something in Dallas. I wouldn't mind ditching DirecTV...

Yeah, live in an at&t area, so don't see this happening...
For those in an at&t area though, there is ray of hope!! Get it... fiber, ray, light... FORGET IT!

at&t is slowly (and I mean slowly) getting their version of "FIOS" implemented in Texas!!
It's called Project Lightspeed and it's fiber to the curb. It will hopefully be comparable with services & pricing!! It should allow for voice/data/video just like FIOS.
Keep an eye out in your area... CHEERS!

My neighborhood is time warner only since it is a newly built neighborhood but when I move...I think I might do at&t since it'll be cheap and I get dollar wi-fi at barnes and noble and what not. FIOS sounds good but I'm rarely at home to enjoy such speeds.

I SOOOOooo HATE you! :P :you-bastard!:

damn... 15 down... that's ****ed up! 2.5 or whatever slug-ass crap I got now just seems ridiculously slow... this coming from an old guy that used to limp along on 2.4K to 14.4K modems back in the day. I remember it taking me about 20 -hours- to download the 1st demo of 'Doom'... which was about 5MB of data.

It must have been more than 5 MB because even on a 2400 baud modem a MB downloaded in roughly 79-80 minutes. Speed didn't vary too much back then. Sounds like it was more like 15 MB.

FIOS actually offers a 30/5 plan as well But at $180 a month, no thanks, even I'm not that that addicted

My first modem was 2400... I got a 14.4k for my birthday one year and nearly crapped my pants because of how fast it was I remember downloading the Wolfenstein 3D demo on my 2400. It was a monstrous 800k or something. Took at hour... Then after all that waiting, the freaking game didn't like my video card for some reason and wouldn't work.

I've had it for some time now and been loving it. I agree, as soon as it is available in your area... try it out.

Speed varied a bunch during this period. Having a modem of 'x' bps meant little when ISP's were very slip-shod to begin with. *ahem* waiting for someone to get the pun... anyway... When iD released this demo, it was the most popular thing on the internet for weeks (well, -maybe- ). Their d/l servers were maxed... you were lucky to get a trickle of data regardless of your modem's rated speed. IOW: don't tell me it didn't take as long as what I very clearly remember it taking

The bright day came that Verizon laid a pamphlet on my door, so i quickly sign up for FIOS and make an appointment for them to come over to my house to install.

They showed up bright and early at 8AM....walked around for a half hour and said "sorry, theres no fiber dropped in your complex yet. you have to wait for that to happen before we can install. bye"

Week later, another note shows up on the door "Verizon is dropping fiber into our complex to offer FIOS. They will be here between the hours of 8AM and 12PM, try to be home for install"

That saturday at gahdamn 8AM, FIOS man shows up, with his brother, FIOS man #2. (oki_boy is not amused at their timing). 2 hours of drilling scratching yelling, and pulling cable and the "Fiber is ready for you guys to have everything installed". They leave.

Another appointment is made.

Homie #3 shows up at 8AM (A-f**king-Gain). He works for two hours, drilling and installing cool blinky boxes. Walks outside, and back in, pissed off. He says "GAHDAMMIT. THOSE INSTALL BASTARDS DIDNT TERMINATE THE FIBER LINES IN THE WHOLE COMPLEX. you guys have to wait until they terminate the lines before the install can be completed." he leaves.

ETA for termination - 3-12 weeks from date of last appointment (in october). called back last week, ETA 3-8 weeks

I sit watching Time Warner cable, with cool blinky boxen in my house.....FIOS can bite me.
