I also have issues with semi-crippling anxiety and trouble sleeping. The "natural remedy" you mentioned helps me immensely. Sidenote: I am moving to NJ in a couple of months. Just in time for me to legally investigate some of this plant-based medicine you speak of.

Inner fat guy gripe:

I ordered a small smoothie from Jamba Juice. The (smoothie chef?) pours the puree into my cup filling it to the point where there's a solid inch of space left in the cup and proceeds to cap it, leaving a large glob of puree still in the blender. I motion to the remains and state: "would you mind throwing the rest of that in there?". Chef begrudgingly fills the remainder of the cup for me, and casts me a glance like "here ya go ****-face".

This isn't the first time this has happened, either. It's lazy and annoying. I get it, it's a dessert, and there's a line, and he's in a hurry, and gets paid peanuts, but fill the damn cup if there's still stuff left in the blender.

I haven't been able to sleep properly in nearly 30 years, after I had a concussion as a kid. My mom and my brothers are night owls like me, but none of them have trouble sleeping through the night. I have very interrupted sleep patterns and at most, can only sleep 3-4 hours before I wake up. Plus my circadian clock is on like a 28 hour day - I need to be up for at least 20 hours before I get tired. My mom and youngest brother are basically non-functional societally due to extreme anxiety, I'm nowhere near that bad.

Working a day shift job exacerbates my sleep issues, depression, anxiety, lethargy, etc., so I have to drug myself with adderall during the day and something to help me sleep at night. When I work a second shift job, I don't need drugs and feel fantastic. I'm entertaining the thought of getting a med tech certification solely based on the fact that hospitals/labs are ALWAYS in need of second shift techs - and the pay isn't too bad.

I get what you're saying about the exercise, but nothing helps me when I'm working day shift. It's just five full days of feeling like ****, and then a little reprieve on the weekends when I can actually sleep when I want.

Just curious if they ever recommended hydroxyzine?

It's an antihistamine but is also used for anxiety and has a sedative affect for sleeping. My son takes it to help him sleep at night and for his anxiety.

Lunesta is good for sleep, but it's considered extra controlled in some states so you have to jump through hoops.

Cats in the bedroom are a problem, I will sometimes kick them out. But a fat, warm purring cat laying next to me on the couch does wonders to put me to sleep.

Out of curiosity, are you a type A morning person? Because go-getter type A's generally have no sympathy for my sleep problems and offer me fixes like "just go to sleep earlier".

Benadryl gives me the jimmy legs something terrible so I'd be hesitant to try another antihistamine. Related story: when I was having a "hell's itch" attack from a bad sunburn, I took 6 benadryls and 6 hydroxyzines over about 16 hours and didn't fall asleep.

Doink, I had similar issues until I took a Genomind test. They seem kind of scammy and pseudoscientific on paper but they came highly recommended by a friend and absolutely changed my life. It turns out my problem wasn't serotonin reuptake, it was that my brain was literally not producing or metabolizing serotonin. I've been on 15mg of L-Methylfolate and 10mg of Trintellix for over a year and I've never felt better.

I am a person that can fall asleep in less than 1 minute consistently. Not sure if I am overly fatigued, but I have no problem shutting my mind off like a switch and just falling asleep.

I am not a morning person, but am at work for 0630. Regardless if working or not I like to get up early because I am able to accomplish a lot in the mornings, and if all the errands are done before 8 or 9 then the remainder of a free day is free The biggest thing for me is literally having zero things to worry about, or perhaps I don't care about much. I do know that if something is on my mind and I make it an issue I can lay awake. But as mentioned I just tell myself to deal with it tomorrow, shut it out, go to sleep. Wake up and deal with the problem.

I used to regularly wake up for 0500, but that was because life as a resident sucked. And for the better part of a decade I survived on less than 5 hrs of sleep working 100+hrs / week. Now life is MUCH better but in my warped world a 60 hr work week is a cake walk (all relative). Now I a 6-7 hr sleeper.

My wife used to be a poor sleeper, but she recently gave up caffeine 100% which interestingly has resulted in her sleeping just fine. Odd that a cup of morning coffee would have any affect at night, but apparently it did for her. Literally after DECADES of not being able to fall asleep and waking up often she now sleeps just fine.

I don't thing going to sleep earlier would solve anything if a poor sleeper, but I hope you figure it out.

I would try a plethora of things.

1. Cut out caffeine completely. Worked for my wife and I was expecting ZERO benefit.

2. As you don't sit on the phone in bed, nothing to change there.

3. Cats may be warm, but they may be moving around at night affecting your sleep.

4. Get a better pillow

That's not a dig at you, I envy your ability to function normally.

Falling asleep instantly? That's madness. I've laid in bed awake for 8 hours before, for seemingly no reason. I just decided to stay up for rest of the day. I generally toss and turn for 45 min when I get into bed, then sleep for 3 hours, then wake up sweaty and thirsty, toss and turn for 1-2 hours, then sleep for 1-2 more, wake up, sleep a little more. This is while I'm on sleep meds or not, doesn't matter. Repeat for 3 decades.

I too want to wake up early to get stuff done, but I'm not very functional when I wake up at 6am. However, at 10pm, I'm finally fully wide awake and ready to go. This is when I start building stuff in the garage or soldering circuit boards.

I can drink strong coffee with my adderall in the morning and go back to sleep. I can take muscle relaxers at night and stay up. My broken circadian rhythm overrides everything else. My wife can wake up at 11am, take two naps during the day, drink 3 cups of tea and then fall asleep instantly at 9pm and sleep soundly for 8-9 hours straight.

Yes, cat fight club at 4am is extremely not enjoyable. And did I ever mention the time my biggest cat with huge sharp talons ripped a 1.5" gash in my upper lip while I was sleeping? A couple more inches up and I think she would've ruptured my eyeball.

Do you exercise? Try some of that. You will crave carbs after, but this should help clear your mind.

Maybe make a list of what is keeping you up at night. Then write down how you could tackle that. The solution could help your brain stop thinking about stuff.

Play some relaxing video games at night to help you clear mind.

Wank more often. Always helps (for those 30 secs)

Dont listen to music loudly hours before bed. I often find myself waking up at night with music in my head. Music which really makes me work out. Imagine waking up at night every few hours with the energy ready to go. It sucks.

Hmmm, I'm open to whatever at this point in my life. How did a genetic screening tell them you were devoid of serotonin though?

Exercising really doesn't affect my ability to sleep at night - at home, I've been doing 50 mins on the bike, then I throw in 75-100 pushups, squats (with dinky weights) and any arm/shoulder exercises I feel like doing. Total of at least an hour, zero affect on how I sleep.

I've lifted heavy at the gym until I was shaky and nauseous, I've hiked or biked for hours, tried HIIT, just plain walking...all very good for me and releases physical stress but mentally I feel no improvement.

Things I think about in bed at night:
- if I went to France, would the French I remember from high school be good enough for me to get by? And then I spend 30 min thinking of scenarios and trying to remember words
- what would I do if the dip**** owner at work got in my face and started yelling at me? Then I think up scenarios where I'm beating the **** out of him and how I would run out to the woods to escape the police. Another 30 min fabricated scenario
- how I would like that latina chick at work with the phat ass to sit on my face
- that time I said that stupid thing in high school and felt dumb
- why do people own Huskys when they know they will just be locked up alone in the house for 10+ hours, it's mean. Those dogs need exercise!
- how did humans go from making pointed sticks to katanas to flamethrowers to nuclear weapons? That's nuts.
- how many grains of sand exist in the world?
- what's my favorite extinct gigantic sea reptile? Mosasaurs are pretty ****ing cool I guess.

Do you see where I'm going with this? THIS IS CONSTANT and I can't turn it off. Something in my brain is tripped to the ON position permanently. The upside to this is that my dreams are ****ing ridiculous. I was a giant robot with laser swords up in the stratosphere fighting a gigantic mech airship a few months ago, that was fun. And I hear music in my dreams, but my brain is making it up. Like dope beats and real coherent lyrics, I wish I could record it.

I was in the habit of watching Bob Ross before bed, that really worked well. I need to start doing that again. And yeah, I've had to get up and rub one out at like 4am before just to stop the thoughts. I've been playing Chrono Trigger at night lately, it's a lot less aggravating than Dark Souls for damn sure.

It's been a while, but if memory serves, the way it works is that they test for the expression of certain genes that govern how the body produces and metabolizes things like serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, etc. So in my case they found that my body wasn't properly metabolizing folic acid, a building block of serotonin, and that almost all of the genes that governed serotonin production were not "active" the way they needed to be - in other words, SSRIs were making the problem worse by further reducing the reuptake of what little serotonin I already had.

It is critical to work with a provider who knows about the test itself, but they have a thing on their website where you can look up providers who are familiar with the process and the test. It's definitely worth a shot, I think!

Wear blue light blocking glasses starting at 8pm. Any exposure to blue light and we don't produce our own melatonin. I started doing this about a year and a half ago and do definitely have better quality sleep. Wife also noticed similar benefits.

I can't play video games to close to sleep as it ends up amping me up, needs to be more mindless.

Eating earlier and having no snack after last meal has also been helpful.

I read nightly in bed and that settles my brain down more than anything. Also on the random times I wake up in the middle of the night which is less often now I'll read to shut my brain off. I read on my kindle Oasis or Paperwhite (so no lcd screen, just e ink). I also wear my blue light blocking glasses during reading.

I too have the curse of a very active mind at night but those things above help a lot.

I woud recommend the book Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. He's a sleep researcher PHD, runs the sleep lab at UC Berkeley. Very good book on sleep issues, causes, effects, etc.

Too much exercise (overreaching or overtraining specifically) is bad for me and too close to bed especially is also not good.

My son has ADHD and its like his brain does not have the sleepy switch. He has had trouble sleeping since a baby and the only thing that helps is Melatonin drops under the tongue before bed. It's like he needs this to indicate to his brain to start the night time sleep process. He just doesn't get tired without it.

I've had sleep issues since I was a kid. I can sometimes get to sleep at a decent hour and sometimes into a routine where I can sleep on a schedule but it falls apart pretty easily. I've tried the lot of solutions and nothing works long term... mostly I have nothing to add so far as help or anything positive just maybe that some people just aren't going to get good sleep and will remain in a fog of, to poorly sum up the feelings, grumpiness.

Age has degraded the length of my slumber.

In my younger years I'd have the occasional insomnia. Get 4-5hrs of sleep and be exhausted the whole day and ready to collapse into bed the following night. But I usually hit the bed, passed out, and the alarm would wake me after nearly 8 hours.

I still go to bed at the same time, but end up waking up 2 hours early prior to my alarm. I get maybe 6 hours at night and 7 if I am lucky.

And I should be feeling like a zombie, but don't. I usually don't even get sleepy during the day. I should feel like crap, but I guess my body is getting all it needs now.

Ah intredasting. I find this kinda stuff neat. And it reinforces my notion that feelings and emotions aren't real, it's all just chemical reactions.

Unfortunately for me, I stare at 3-4 monitors (brightness turned way down) under fluorescent lights for 8 hours a day. My eyes and my brain feel zapped by the end of the day. I have blue eyes and feel like modern lighting really bothers me. Super bright blue LED lights almost make me feel dizzy looking at them. I do have a pair of those glasses though, I should probably wear them full time.

Reading is one thing I haven't tried but man, reading for pleasure is painful for me. Like I'm looking at the words, but not always processing them, and after a few sentences I realize I have no idea what I just read. So I have to go back. My attention span is basically zero when reading more than a paragraph or two. Before my childhood concussion, I used to devour books. Afterwards, I just completely stopped reading for pleasure.

I think a good amount of my inability to sleep or concentrate or shut my brain off is really due to brain damage. Seriously. I don't know how effective good sleep hygiene habits will be if brain not work good.

I was never tired at bedtime as a kid, I always wanted to stay up late. I'm sure he gets tired eventually, it could be something like delayed phase sleep disorder, where his brain is just on a later sleep/wake cycle than normal people.

Chemical reactions are as real as anything else. It was interesting - I didn't really "feel" depressed, but it turns out I had just gotten used to playing on hard mode with no serotonin. My world really has changed for the better in so many ways - it's absolutely worth taking the test. Insurance covered mine when I took it, it's worth seeing if yours will too. If not, it's not too pricey - couple hundred bucks.
