THIS.

She had a separate number for the watch through Verizon.

My wife got the series 5 40mm about 4 months ago after saying she never wanted one. She's hooked on the fitness tracking features now.

Is there anything the one with cell service can do that the regular one cannot as long as the phone is near? Texting, calls etc?

You can text or call from the watch without the phone nearby.

There are apps that if they have an Apple Watch equivalent, you can in theory use those - Mail, Starbucks, etc. So I guess if you wanted to check an email on your watch with the phone not nearby, it would use your cell data on the watch.

I've checked my email from my watch, it's brutal to read, nearly impossible to type.

Thanks. From the above link:

Before we get into other differences, let's first discuss what are the things that only an Apple Watch's GPS + Cellular variant can do. Fundamentals first, you can send and receive messages and also make and answer phone calls. Plus, you can ask Siri to get directions, access messages, perform a quick web search, and do a lot more.
Am I reading that without cellular you can't, natively, send text messages etc even with your phone nearby? That doesn't seem right. I was thinking you could make calls, text, check apps etc as long as it was pulling data from your phone?

that is correct. As long as your phone is within range, it can do all of the above.

This is all too much. I'm too old to care and too engineer to not think it through.
Target has them on sale. I might just buy her the GPS+Cellular version. I'm going to switch her phone to Xfinity in December, they give you 3 months of smart watch service for free so if we decide to try the cell features we can and if they aren't worth it I'm just out the extra cost of the model upgrade.

I'm having trouble following the exchange above. The gist of it is this:
  • Apple Watch Cellular + Active LTE plan for Watch + iPhone connected + not on known Wi-Fi network = uses iPhone cell plan for everything
  • Apple Watch Cellular + Active LTE plan for Watch + no iPhone connected + known Wi-Fi network = uses Wi-Fi for everything
  • Apple Watch regular + iPhone connected = uses iPhone cell plan for everything
  • Apple Watch regular + no iPhone connected + known Wi-Fi network = uses Wi-Fi for everything, can do Wi-Fi calling if your phone carrier supports it
  • Apple Watch Cellular + Active LTE plan + no iPhone in range = completely autonomous (has own separate phone number, but cell carriers have a "forwarding service" to send calls and texts to the autonomous device--i.e. Numbersync)
  • Apple Watch Cellular + no Active LTE plan + no iPhone in range + no known Wi-Fi network= can call 911, but no cell throughput otherwise
  • Apple Watch regular + no iPhone in range + no known Wi-Fi = you're off the grid

I think that covers all the permutations.

Cliffnotes:
Apple Watch prioritizes connections
  • Tethered iPhone > Wi-Fi > Cellular (if device has the chipset)
  • Little known tidbit is that you can still dial 911 on any old phone/old SIM as long as it can connect to a cell network, even if you don't have an active plan.

Thanks psg. Yeah I was just wondering if the cell version could do more or if you gave something useful up without it. Most write-ups seem rather vague.
I was looking for Black Friday deals. Xfinity hasn't listed them, and if I went with them I'd have to get the cell version either way. Target has them 10% off, plus another 5% for RedCard. Like I said, I'm leaning towards pulling the trigger while they're on sale, and just getting the cell version since there doesn't appear to be a drawback to getting it even if I don't activate its cell component.

You're welcome. It just allows you autonomy if you don't want to lug the phone around. I think the 'Find My Watch' feature can leverage LTE too, but I haven't seen that documented.

At the same time, watch battery life is drastically lower if it's actually using the LTE. And as you noted, if you're on the fence, might as well get the one with the hardware in it and see if it's worth it for you guys. Here's a summary I just found that's pretty good:

Saw that site, info seems to be a mix of new and old models. Now I just need to find a way to verify what color she wants lol

Any of you tried trading in a broken Apple Watch? Wife broke her 5 series 40mm and have no idea what to do with it. Just trying to get some cash for it somehow

Where can I sell an Apple Watch 5 40mm, but it has a broken screen?
Still works, and know I won't get more than $40 though.

https://www.gadgetgone.com/devices/s...atch-series-5/

This is the only site I've seen/ found that seems legit.
Anyone else have any others they may have used before?

Anyone looking for a used Apple Watch? Wife wanted the ECG and O2 features of the series 6 so we picked one up last night.

Have the Series 3 Cellular 42MM for sale. Will give a NASIOC discount if anyone wants it.

Thinking of getting a smart watch but I'm unsure which one. I don't have an iPhone so I'm not getting the Apple watch. I have a Fitbit Charge 3 now but the screen is fading so that I can't even see it in bright light now which is why I'm looking for something new.

So I'm looking at the Versa 3 or the Sense but I'm open to other suggestions. I know the Versa 3 and the Sense are nearly identical except for ECG and O2 monitoring. I'm leaning towards the Sense because why not have the extra features.

I got the Fitbit Sense. Ordered it on Thursday and got it on Friday from Amazon.

I like it so far. The screen is responsive although sometimes it may take a few swipes to get it to switch screens. I'll see how the battery life is. I charged it completely yesterday morning and I'm on 80% now. I don't use the always on display so I'm hoping for 4 or 5 days on a charge.

I recently bought myself a Fitbit Alta. A very cool smart watch, I personally find it more convenient than an Apple Watch. The only thing that doesn't suit me about them is their straps. I bought myself a strap separately, maybe someone faced the same problem, so I'll leave the site.

fitbit alta bands https://watchbandempire.com.au/colle...bit-alta-bands

Well, in general, apart from the problem with the strap, I did not find any minuses with this watch. If someone has also used them for a long time and has already discovered something, please let me know.

I'm considering a smart watch, but not too smart. Any recommendations?
I'm looking for waterproof, decent battery life, and just basics such as if I receive a phone call or text - so I can set my phone aside somewhere but still be notified in case of any emergencies.

Sleep tracking would be nice too. Strong vibrating alarm is high on the list.

I would say the Galaxy 4 pretty much covers all of your requirements.
I've always loved my mechanical watches (still do), but my wife gifted me one for X-Mas and I've been wearing it ever since.
Vibration is very strong (IMO) or at least I wouldn't want anything stronger than that.

I don't wear it when I sleep, but it does track your sleeping patterns along with tons of other functions.

I went with Apple watch because I already had an Iphone.
I also liked Apple's health monitor and its options. I'm at that age where I have to start taking it slow.
Heart rate monitor is very accurate. Matches what the elliptical/treadmill sensors. EKG, blood O2, fall detection, etc. All good to have.
My battery lasts about 2 days.

This weekend I got a glass screen protector. I should have done that when I bought it. Fortunately, the one I bought completely hides minor scratches.

I have an Iphone so would consider the apple watch, but 2 days of battery life would drive me mad. I don't take my current watch off for probably 2 weeks at a time, and leave it on while sleeping.

If you're worried about battery life your only options are a Garmin or Fitbit pretty much, and even then you might get 6 or 7 days use. Both are more fitness oriented than phone feature oriented. If you just want to see if you got a text or a phone call and not respond back through the watch these should fit the bill.

I <3 my Tissot T-touch Solar.

only thing it doesn't do is make sleep tracking.

battery lasts for 6 months, can configure an alarm, receives notifications only, step counter, various other xometers.

not cheap, but also Tissot, so very discrete and doesn't look like a smart watch, but I guess that's not a negative these days.

I have a GSpot GShock watch that recharges via solar and has been running on the same battery for 8 years, and syncs time via radio. I thought, I'm not getting a smart watch. My watch will outlast me and its indestructible.

I now have a smart watch that I have to put in its dock every night, and its no big deal. I do the same with the phone anyway.
Ill just plan out my day. Am I doing something dangerous? Casio. Workout, hanging out, etc? Apple.
