My wife, who for years was against having a dog, suggested that I meet a dog this past weekend.

Say hello to the newest member of our family... Marci.

The shelter THINKS that she's a dachshund/Pit mix, but she's got webbed toes, so I am pretty sure she's a Dachshund/WhateverJumpedTheFence terrier mix. She's got a bit of a pit face/forehead, dachshund body, big feet with webbed toes, and I do love the white stripe on her muzzle. She's an 8 week old sweetie who really needs to get better about potty OUTSIDE. But she's still a pup.

Thanks! She's a love dog. She's sitting on my foot right now as I work. I had a dog middle school through college and then I had to leave her with my parents when I moved away from home as I didn't have a place for her in my apartment. She was my last dog. Then I hooked up with my now wife, and she thought she was allergic so didn't want a dog. Fast forward nearly 15 years later and we have a kid and we told him when he was 2 that when he stopped making mistakes in his undies that we would get a dog. He was exited at first but then wondered if he really wanted a dog. So we dog-sat a few times, and then a niece moved in with us for a year and she had a Aussie Shepherd (Super high energy spaz with little to no training) and my wonderful wife was patient as I helped our niece get her calmed down and improved her training/attitude. Thursday, I get a picture text... and a short "Do you want to meet her?"

Damn straight I do! But I was keeping my expectations low as she had been against the idea of dog for so long...

So your wife wanted you to meet a new wiener pit? Sounds like a trap.

Weird stuff going on this June. We don't have luck with Bulldogs and June:

Yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of us putting Mylo, our Vicotorian Bulldog down.

Next week is the b-day of our Olde English Bulldogge.

On Friday evening, she tore her ACL running around on the carpeting upstairs in our house. She never comes upstairs, the entire main floor of our house is hardwood only, so she never has the traction to really run around.

She goes in for ACL surgery on the 18th, 2 days after her b-day, 1 week before the 9 yr anniversary of Mylo's ACL surgery.

At least this time we bought pet insurance before we got the dog and with her monthly allergy shot, it's basically paying for itself. Let's hope it pays for this surgery. I called to try and get an idea if they cover the ACL, they would not give us an answer until we submit the actual claim for the surgery. Good times.

We also added to our pack today:

I wasn't super excited about #puppylife, or going through a breeder since there's a dog somewhere at a rescue that needs a home.

... but he is adorable and the wife is happy.

We found out about a month ago that our five year old Rathuahua Gizmo has a heart defect.

They were able to get his rhythm back to normal with Sotalol but he's been on a diuretic for the last two weeks because he has fluid buildup on his lungs. He seemed to be doing better last week but he's started struggling again this weekend.

He's barely eaten anything the last two days.

I dread calling the vet in the morning. If they tell me that this torturous for him, I'll let the wife spend one more night snuggling with him and take him back on Wednesday for the final time.

Going in for bloodwork pre-ACL surgery and to talk to the actual vet that will be performing the surgery on Friday, as he only works 2-3 days a week, must be nice.

Just got back from the vet.

She's putting him on antibiotics because she believes the fluid on his lungs may have progressed to pneumonia, which hopefully explains his turn for the worse.

She said that's really all she can do for him and that if he isn't showing signs of improvement (ie eating) in the next 48H, we need to decide what the next move is for him.

We'll either have to take him to the emergency clinic ($Texas) or let him go.

Sorry to hear about your pup. Hoping the antibiotics have some effect. I’m sure whatever you do, it will be the best for him.

Finally had to break down and take Gizmo to the doggo ER yesterday.

Luckily the local ER is where the canine cardiologist, that we were scheduled to see on 7/2, worked.

He was able to "book" him for a rescheduled appointment instead of an emergency visit, which probably cut our bill in half or more.

It was heartbreaking to see him on oxygen when we left him but it appears to have helped overnight and the news today was somewhat promising.

After doing a thorough examination, he basically **** on our, soon to be ex, vets diagnosis and said his heart was fine and we should immediately stop the medication we had him on.

He's lost 3lbs through all of this, he started at 11lbs, but the the doc thinks it's mostly water weight from the diuretic and that he'll gain it back pretty quickly if makes it through to the other side.

Diagnosis:

Giz has developed fibrosis but the Dr. can't really tell the severity without more costly procedures.

He has prescribed a cocktail of pharmaceuticals Some are to help him in the short-term, a few he'll have to take for the rest of his life. He said if the cocktail doesn't have him showing signs of improvement by the end of the weekend his lungs may be shot.

We're hoping for the best but we've already made the decision that we aren't going to let him continue to suffer if he doesn't improve.

Hoping for the best for you. Hardest part of our doggo ownership. Felt similar when Bruno developed lymphoma and it progressed too aggressively. Quality of life is the best decision to make for them. Hard, sad but true

Wife beat me home by about five minutes today and was in tears when I walked in the door.

He made some progress earlier in the weekend after the oxygen treatment but is back to where he was when we took him to the ER on Wednesday.

We've made the decision to put him down. We're going to the emergency vet here in a few.

RIP little buddy.
