Tossing around the idea of selling my Hypermotard to pick up a dirt bike. Budget will be roughly 4k for a bike.

I need something I can ride almost if not all environments. Something that can do mx, single track, dunes, and desert riding. Now I know not one bike will excel in all categories but it would be nice to have something that can at least be rideable in all those scenarios. I do live in colorado where I can still make strictly dirt bikes road legal so a total MX bike isn't off the table.

I am looking for a bike that pacsk a good punch power wise and has some longer gears. Between the Duc and my Jeep between geared very short I want something that I can really stretch it legs out and not have to shift three times in 50 feet.

I really would like to get my hands on a 500EXC KTM but those are out of the budget. Are there any other bikes I should be looking at?

08-11 KTM 530. They are stout and will do everything you want. I put 4 or 5 seasons on an 09 and loved every minute.

Looks like we have a couple of XC-Ws out here that are already plated. The KTM seems to be the go-to bike. ANy big difference between the 450, 500 & 530? I'm more of an aggressive rider that likes to be flat out most the time.

I have an older KTM 450EXC (carb'd) that has no problem hanging out at 90mph. I imagine the newer, fuel injected models to be even better. I'm actually thinking about going down to a 350 (fuel injected) since it has the same power and would be easier to handle on trails.

I need to get the hyper listed for sale but if you're looking to sell it let me know! I am in the wash park area with friends down in Castle Rock and family in Parker so I am down there occasionally.

Unless yoar name is Taylor Robert, Kalib Russel or Toby Price, power will not be an issue even with the older XC-4 carbed bikes. My 530 dynoed at 52whp which is right about where my 2018 500 is at. The newer 500 picks up revs a tad quicker.

If you want to be flat out in any of these you best be in the open spaces. My 530/500 gets to be a handful after a few hours of riding. I'm talking off pavement riding. Almost any bike on pave feels slow.

imo stay away from the older RFS series. The valve train in these are no where near as bullet proof as the 08 and on XC-4 engines.

teh old five turdy never let me down.

teh new five hundo did once.

I've heard the opposite. RFS is bulletproof. A couple examples:

*disclaimer: I have an RFS motor bike, and bought it because of it's reputation for being bulletproof.

I was gonna say, I have been outta this game for a while but those old RFS motors were tough as they come.

They were good engines however the overwhelming general consensus is the new (2008 on up) XC-4 top ends are pretty much the best in the business. I's not unusual for owners to rarely have to adjust during the life of their bikes. My 09's head was left untouched when I rebuilt the bottom end at 10,000 miles.

absolutely! I am definetly not even close to that riding level. I have more time on street bikes now even though I grew up on a thumper. I took a friends KX450 out and didnt think it was that quick at all.
