I would have a cell phone only, but where I live there is no coverage. I am thinking about dropping my regular phone and adding a Skype phone # to my cell and use the internet for it.

I've been without tv and home phone since I moved into my house last year. I don't miss it a bit. I can keep myself entertained with Netflix, and I usually watch FB games somewhere else anyway, so that's not really a big deal for me. Our local provider's (Time Warner) rates are absolutely insane, and I refuse to pay that much for something I don't need.

I haven't had TV service for ~6 years.

These days we pretty much watch everything on the xBox 360.. ESPN for sports, Netflix for TV shows and movies.. many of which are HD streams.

My wife still watches Glee on Hulu.. ugh.

When I moved into my new place I decided to ditch cable to save some money. I set up a Windows 7 PC for the Windows Media Center and a HD tuner card for the rabbit ears. I'm getting about 17 different channels, all the basic networks with a bunch of different PBS stations and some other random networks (2 ion, 2 CW). About 6 of the networks are HD, too.

The best part is the ability to record and the built in guide. Once you have the ability to see what shows are going to be on, it feels a lot like cable.

If you've got a xbox360 you can use it as a media center extender and access everything without hooking your computer to your tv.

We have had ours off for a month. We have internet and netflix right now which covers pretty much all of our viewing content. The only thing that concerned me was being able to watch football when it was on. For some reason basic cable still works through my tv so that took car of that concern.

This, or 'add a line' to your existing cell (with free phone) for ~$10/month. And yes, they can port over your existing home phone number to it.

I haven't had cable television since early-2007.

I miss nothing about it.

Took my cable box back on Monday.
My bill for the bundled service went up to around $180/ month, and they weren't going to renegotiate.
So far, I'm loving not having the cable tv. PS3+ Netflix, hulu etc. is great.
My wife and kids are trying to get used to not having it on for background noise.

If you have your internet through your cable co, thats most likely why your basic cable is still working.

I'm waiting for it to be added to Xbox Live to see how that is. If it's good, then I might drop my Uverse TV for Netflix (which I already have) and Hulu+.

I need to run a hardwire to my living room though. Router is on the other side of the house and the when streaming Netflix, the wireless is not stable all of the time.

I have the Hulu+ app on my TV, I might have to try it out. I think you still get commercials though,

I haven't had cable for almost two years and never miss it. I have a 42" Panny plasma with a Terk antenna that gets me the networks for some background noise or the news. When I want to catch up on a show I just watch it on Hulu. The way I see it is if you need 400 channels to give yourself something to do, you need to get out more.

I like the feeling of not giving Comcast a single penny in two years.

I may not be the smartest guy in the world, but I'm a lot smarter than my neighbor who actually pays for internet.

Better question is why do you need a home phone?
That.

We dropped our land lines and just use our cellular lines.

Our cable/internet/phone bill was $150 a month.
It's now $38 for just internet.

So what you're saying is you're stealing your internet? (Or stealing someone elses more specifically).

I dropped cable for the past year, and it was refreshing. I ended up getting a lot more done. The internet kept me entertained when needed. I just got it back, though, for the winter. Wanted to watch the NBA and have something for those days you just don't wanna go anywhere because it's 0 degrees out. Could certainly live w/o it, though. Try it.

We've had it off for 6 months now and the problem we ran into is that the SO like background noise and doesn't like having to search for stuff to watch.

I'm a cable guy, and I dropped cable 6 months ago. It wasn't our choice, as the cableco wanted $10g to run a drop to our house. I said "fugget that!".

I now have a rooftop antenna that gets me 4 HD channels, and netflix. Honestly, I miss nothing about TV. In fact, the wife misses intervention and "real housewives", a win for me.
