Crankshaft randomly locked
Hello,
I am new here. I have a classic scooby from 1998 with an MY '04 engine EJ205 with an 6MT STI transmission. Since last weekend when driving late night the engine sudenly stalls during a shift. Trying restart didn' t work, the starteris not able to rotate the crankshaft. The car went towed back to my home. At home the folllowing day i was able to free the locked crankshaft. Then after performet a couple of inspections i was able to rotate the crankshaft freely both counter and counterclockwise. Also the starter was then be able to rotate the engine many times without any issue. Then suddenly it locks again. I can repeat using a breaker bar to free the crankshaft, than the story repeats again. So for a summary: -Engine stalled while driving -No strange noises before this happened -Oil and coolant levels are fine, oil is changed a few weeks ago. -No visible damage to engine -Be able to free the crankshaft, then it rotates freely without any noise or resistance Inspections perforned after getting the crankshaft free: - Checked crankshaft operation by turning it manualy - Checked starter and ruled out any blocking cause by starter -Checked any transmission locking, transmission does not lockup the crankshaft -Removed all sparkplugs, all are fine - Checked cylinder operation, all cylinders are moving, this is also hearable. - Checked compression, all cylinders buildup compression -Checked timing belt and TDC marks, all are fine, also, TDC marks are not moved. So timing belt is not playing a role for this problem. Timing belt is also moving inline with crankshaft. It is possible that this engine is seized, but it looks strange to my that i can get free out the crankshaft, than it rotates freely many times and then suddenly it locks again. Maybe something in the clutch house is locking up the crankshaft, possible a bold or something between the flywheel and engine. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanx in advance Verstuurd vanaf mijn I4113 met Tapatalk

Have you tried pulling/pushing on the crankshaft with the front pulley? Any movement?

We have pulled out the engine. There was nothing locked behind the clutch house.
Then we removed the oil pan and found some tiny copper parts in it, which is indicating bearing failure. Verstuurd vanaf mijn I4113 met Tapatalk |
