I would have called a flatbed and had the car dropped off at the dealer. Then show up and give them the info on the non-drivable car they need to take care of. Although several local dealers to me are not such dick heads, so they'd let me bring it in and leave it.

Also something to think about. They might not have replaced some damaged parts the last time the engine shortblock or whatever they did was replaced.

This isn't health care, he can't call up an insurance company and ask for a policy AFTER a failure
Ummmm no...for the un informed like your self SUBARU extended the original warranty for certain 2012-2017 wrx/STI from 5/60k to 8/100k......it was the result of the first engine lawsuit...OP should look into it..

really?
just "certain" ones from 2012 to 2017?
Like which ones? Blue ones or something? Or ones with moonroofs?

awesome news, since you are so well informed maybe clarify that with a shred of actual information beyond "your warranty might be double what everybody elses is"

I think that's referring to the class action lawsuit that led to the warranty extension, which was for the spun bearing issues - not sure it applies across the board
https://subaru.oemdtc.com/1388/crank...-2012-2017-sti

the fun part was they extended the warranty for the WRX and STI but left the FXT and LGT out.

Funny still no actual facts about that though from the dude who seemed to have all the answers
Plus, if it was a spun bearing class action lawsuit I'm guessing that means it will apply to spun bearings, and not things that are NOT spun bearings.
Just a guess though

So there absolutely was a class action suit, Subaru did indeed lose, and subaru absolutely did do an extended warranty on all of the in-class vehicles - in the settlement documents, it states "Subaru will extend its existing express Powertrain Limited Warranty, applicable to the Settlement Class Vehicles, to cover Qualifying Repairs performed by an Authorized Subaru Dealer, to a period of eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the In-Service Date of the Settlement Class Vehicle. With the exception of the extension of the duration, the Extended Warranty shall be governed by the same terms as the Powertrain Limited Warranty."

So the extension was just a universal extension of the powertrain warranty (but the only repairs covered retroactively from before the class action was settled were for spun bearings and related damage)

and I am not at all bitter that despite having the same engine internals (same part numbers), the engine in the 12 LGT was not included so when I needed a shortblock at 59k miles, they wouldn't include it in the settlement (SoA definitely did help - they essentially covered the short block, but I paid for the other parts and the labor on an engine I have meticulously maintained...)

I agree that all sounds great, but I live here on earth and I would bet my next 5 paychecks if the OP brings that up there will be a loophole keeping him within his regular warranty for this failure.

Class action suits are meant for one thing, to make lawyers money. They pretend they give a crap about the consumer but the settlements generally have 98% of the spoils going to lawyers and the remaining scraps being tossed to the consumer.
If the consumer got the rewards and the lawyers had to do that work out of the goodness of their hearts there would be no class action lawsuits ever again.

Bringing it up to the dealership would probably result in them telling him to go pound sand, but asking about it when he speaks with SoA will likely be productive, then they will reach out to the dealership. (attitude is everything when talking to them, though - go in all angry and entitled, and they likely will be difficult)

Since the powertrain warranty was extended, without adding specificity to what is covered, it's not really a loophole - it's the way it is. Unlikely you'll get that through a service writer, though.

this, and a lesson to all, these conversations should be backed up with an email. I would have my lawyer do the next communications

That's not how insurance works, hahahahahhahaahahaaaa.
$28k is ridiculous though.
