Default BrenTuning | 2015 WRX development thread

At BrenTuning, we strive to progress on new platforms, and we are at the forefront for the 2015 WRX. We have found this model to be no different than previous model year Subaru's with their tuning strategy and emissions-focused AFR's. Huge gains have been found throughout the whole rev range from our custom PROtune. Customers are raving about the improved throttle mapping, linear power delivery and improved fuel economy. We have an in-house Mustang MD-150 Dyno and a fan setup that keeps the shop conditions as close to the real world as possible. We will be using this thread to keep you up to date on the cars that come through the shop. We have quite a few people taking advantage of our discounted 2015 WRX/STi tunes through the end of the year, so there will be many more updates! Not local to us? No worries, we can e-tune as well! Shoot us a PM, email or give us a call to schedule your appointment and take advantage of our dyno tune sale through the end of the year!

Info: Kris came from Orange County, NY to have his 2015 WRX PROtuned at BrenTuning. This car saw the highest numbers as of yet, seems like the catback is a bit more restrictive over past years. No stock baseline on this car as it was late in the day and he had a long drive home, we ran it with the Cobb v110 update that it came in with. This Stage 1 baselined higher than any of the previous cars due to having the most recent Cobb map. This baseline was Cobb Stage 1 v110, the next two posts were Cobb Stage 1 v108.

What we have found with cars that are equipped with a Mishimoto intake is that they require a lot of individual MAF scaling. We spent A LOT of time on on the dyno with this car working to get the AFR flat. We have found that no two cars with these intakes are scaling out the same, and require it's own custom MAF scaling.

Today we had a 2015 WRX owner drive up from New Jersey for us to Protune his car. This car had an ETS catless turboback along with a Mishimoto intake (no box). This car was tuned on 93 octane and made the highest numbers we have seen to date -- 310WHP/345WTQ! While the catless cars are finicky to tune, there is definitely power to be had by going fully catless. We would like to get an E85/TGV Delete car in house for additional testing, from the results we have seen, the numbers should be pretty good!

Many people have contacted us regarding gains from non-exhaust related modifications and tuning. While the gains from a J-pipe or catback exhaust have proven to be worthwhile, not everyone can have an exhaust on their car for varying reasons. A great option for those looking to avoid exhaust modifications is an intake and TIC TGV deletes! This car came in for installation of an ETS intake / TIC TGV delete and dyno tuning last week. We put the car on the dyno in stock form with just a tune and it made 269WHP/291WTQ, after adding the intake, TGV deletes and tweaking a few tables, we got the car to 276WHP/302WTQ. This car did baseline fairly low, we have had a few stock cars in the 280-290 range, but from two mods the car gained 7WHP/11WTQ. The gains from the intake/TGV delete doesn't seem much different than just TGV deletes alone. The gains throughout the midrange are very nice over a tune only car and it holds power up top much better. Also, the intake sounds great and both mods are easy to install and fairly cheap.

We do install all of the parts we sell, so for anyone local, be sure to give us a call to package parts/install/dyno tuning for the greatest savings!

This is what we saw for gains from TIC TGV Deletes alone on a stage 2 car:

Scott, NBRX on Nasioc, came in a few weeks ago to take advantage of our tax refund sale and get his 2015 WRX dyno tuned! His car is completely stock besides a Nameless Performance Catback Exhaust (which really sounds great on the '15 WRX). Scott drove the car here with a Cobb Stage 1 91 octane map with 93 octane in the tank. The Stage 1 91 octane map baselined fairly low at 227WHP/249WTQ. After spending some time with the car on the dyno, the final map made 269WHP/294WTQ! Scott asked that the car be kept conservative with longevity and reliability in mind.

We have e-tuned tons of CVT WRX and FXT but have yet to have one on the dyno! This car came in last week for a PROTune and was equipped with just a Mishimoto intake and box. The car baselined fairly high at 234WHP/216WTQ. The car with Cobb's latest V116 software for the Mishimoto intake put down 244WHP/246WTQ. After spending time on the dyno and dialing in the PROTune, the final numbers were 265WHP/265WTQ! While the peak gains are large, it doesn't tell the whole story. If you compare the stock graph to the PROTuned graph you will see gains of almost 100WTQ at 3000RPM and over 70WTQ at 3600RPM! This results in dramatically improved bottom end. The top end also holds very well and does better than a comparable 6MT WRX, revving easily and keeping power to 7000RPM. While most 6MT cars are out of breathe at 6800, the CVT has a few hundred extra RPM in it.

After tuning this car, we took it out on the street to test out some of the CVT tuning changes we made since you can't really get a good feel on the dyno. The CVT is really an amazing transmission and we were very impressed. While the OEM and Cobb map hang between shifts when using Sport sharp, we found that when you modify the requested torque tables that Cobb gives you access to, you can change the CVT shift behavior and remove the lag between shifts completely. Prior to modifying this table, the best results and least amount of lag occurred in Sport mode, however, Sport Sharp would have the fastest "shift" speed. After modifying the map the lag is gone and you can now utilize Sport Sharp with the quickest shifting and no lag. The CVT allows the transmission stay in the meat of the powerband and really makes the car move out. This is probably the fastest 270WHP car we have ever been in! Very impressive package! We have a video on our Instagram page to get an idea of how the modified CVT behaves!

We finally had the chance to tune the infamous ETS 5858 setup on a 2015 WRX. Since this kit came out, we have been excited to get our hands on one. A customer of ours, Steve, finally installed his and came down for a PROTune. Previous to this setup, he had a full bolt on (Catless TBE, TGV, Charge pipe, TMIC, etc) version of the same car. That car was our highest pump gas car at around 325WHP which made for a quick everyday driver. After getting the itch for more power, Steve ordered the ETS 5858 setup and ETS FMIC. The car was pretty finicky to tune and we can definitely see why some shops have had issues with reliability, the setup is very happy making more power, but risking longevity is never something we do. We spent quite a few hours on the dyno with this car and the results were amazing. The car was tuned on 93 octane pump gas and made an easy 375WHP/364WTQ and only 19PSI! The top end gains are the most impressive, right around 70WHP over full bolt-on trim. While spool is noticeably reduced, once you are past 4200RPM, the ETS kit makes tons of extra power all the way to redline, where these cars need help the most.

If you compare the graphs to a 100% stock car, power output is almost identical in the lower RPM while picking up 157WHP/136WTQ peak, all on the stock engine. Very impressive!

Little data for you:

We had a customer come in for full bolt-ons and dyno tuning last week. At his request we tuned the car with an AEM drop-in filter with the stock airbox, the car made 306WHP/325WTQ. On the dyno, without touching the tune, we installed an OEM air filter and did another pass. The car made 300WHP/318WTQ for a loss of 6WHP/7WTQ. I guess there is a benefit from a drop-in filter. I would still stick with something non-oiled like the AEM dry flow however.

Our strongest stage 2++ FA20 to date!

Nate brought in his full bolt on 2015 WRX for us to tune this past Tuesday. The car was beautiful and had a full STi Brembo conversion as well. The car was equipped with the following:

GS Catless J
N1 catback
GS EBCS
TGV Deletes
PRL Intake

The car tuned wonderfully and was very strong even on our basemap we sent to get him here. The car ended up putting down 330WHP/345WTQ which is about 10WHP higher than cars that come in with upgraded intercoolers and charge pipes. The GrimmSpeed catless J really performs well, their catted version does as well. We had a car come in the same day with a catted version and similar mods and made about 25WHP less. Obviously this car is a bit of an anomaly.

Couldn't be happier with Bren Tuning. Customer service before even being their customer was 110% percent. Bren answered all and any questions I had when prior tuner considered me to be 'up his ass' trying to get info about the tune and concerns with my car. Made my decision to drive three hours one way worth it.
Beyond customer service with all employees at Bren Tuning was their ability to have my Ecutek locked Ecu unlocked. (And yes depending on tuner, ecutek still locks ecu) Bren than tuned and spent good part of his day with my car on the newest Cobb revision for Accessport. No more revhang or torque dip.
Cannot say thanks enough to Bren Tuning for the work, time, and most of all amazing tune on my car.
The previous EcuTek flash was 'ok', but felt sluggish when on the throttle. I did not like how I was unable to see how car was running or obtain that info, why car still hit boost spikes, what was target boost and was told that was all normal. In stepped Bren and cured all that. After unlocking ecu and removing ecutek, I than put on Cobb OTS stage 1-93 oct, that felt like a new car, better throttle response, more power in the butt dyno over higher rpm range. Than came Bren and his pro-tune....no boost spike, holds strong, amazing power band. Throttle response is similar to stock but holds through powerband. Car feels like a whole new beast. Did not expect these results from this little FA20DIT.

My old 12 GR did 302/331 on stage two, for this at to make this power gain over stock with just catback, filter and tune is awesome! I def have to say Cobb AP > EcuTek. Love the AP and it's user friendly interface to watch and monitor the car the way I want to. Not a fan of not being able to monitor my car.

And ps to all those that think it and some who ask- no correction or inputs on dyno to make it read high. I personally saw all the values that were input as I questioned myself.

Can you give us the part numbers of the mods on your car and what did you do to the stock air box?

Thanks for the info. I'm in Nashville,Tn watching and waiting to see what's coming out. Brentuning is really doing a great job with this so far. I wonder if they could get comparable results from e-tuning?

What does GR sedan fitment mean? Doesn't invidia make a cat back specifically for a 15 wrx? Sorry if this is a dumb question...I'm a newbie!!

Having the car on a dyno will yield you the greatest results. An etune will get you most of the way there though!

The last generation WRX sedan, the chassis code was GR. He wants a single exit exhaust compared to the dual.

Do you need an aftermarket wideband O2 sensor for an e-tune, or will the factory sensor suffice?

They help, but not required for factory fueling. Aftermarket fueling we require a wideband.
