Sound quality with HK system is fine.. weak in the punch but not too boomy. Plenty loud without distortion compared to aftermarket HUs.(maybe louder). Unfortunately no latency adjustment like many aftermarket HUs.
Id pay the usual subaru part discounted price of ~$1000 for it if I had HK setup... aftermarket wont get you a 7.5" screen and the fit kits are gross looking. Plus you'll pay for all those adapters and accessories so the total isnt that far off aftermarket.

Plus it has wifi, so hopefully I am just an update away from having wireless AA.
That was me. The UI/UX is the same since it's essentially streamed from the cell phone, but the visual quality is dependant on the in-car display, and their idea of "high resolution" is laughable (car I was in was a 2019 STI Limited). If it works for you, good to hear, it was a step down for me.

If you're coming from nothing, it's fine, if you had AA previously and are looking to get it into a pre-2019 WRX, go aftermarket... you can come in WELL under $1K for an AA compatible HU, with HK support, installed.

P.S. Subaru advertises it as 7", mine is 6.95", I'm ok with the .05" display size loss.

Unfortunately Crutchfield says that if you have the nav, you have to bypass the amp. And the only way now to have the HK system is to have the nav system.

That basically makes paying for the HK and nav system worthless.

I have a 2018 STI Limited, can confirm they're wrong*.

*I have a Kenwood HU with the RR. Only "additional" work I had to do was tap the OBDII CAN High and Low wires, rest was simple and straightforward.

P.S. The 2018 isn't officially supported by the RR, but it works fine, minus the TPMS, with the 2017 FW. This might be why Crutchfield started saying it's not supported, but I got all my stuff from them, so...

Which radio surround did you use? Would you mind taking some pictures in better light? Can't tell how good or bad the swap looks.

What did you need besides the headunit and Maestro RR? Did you buy the SU02 harness or anything else? Need to splice or repin anything on the factory harness?

The Scosche piano black surround. I'll take a better pic later this afternoon. It's a fingerprint magnet, but it looks good.

Yes, need the SU2, the dash kit, and the Toyota antenna adapter. Aside from the connections between the stereo harness and the SU2, you need to tap 3 wires from the factory wiring. The pink Starlink wire, which is listed in the instructions, and the CAN H and L if you want the OBDII goodies (gauges, car status minus TPMS, rear camera steering overlay). All the wires and pictures of what you're looking for are in the beginning of the thread I linked with my pictures.

The OBDII connection is the only thing that's "non-standard," but it wasn't hard to tap the wires. I plugged the OBDII plug into the port, disconnected the plug with the CAN lines, and then used taps to run a line to the CAN wires on the telematics plug. I left the OBDII plug connected to the port, there's a third wire run there, maybe chassis ground... dunno, but AA freaked out about my handbrake not being set when it wasn't connected.

I'm just gonna post something about this when I get home, lol.

that third wire is called a K line, and it is for bringing the TPMS info into the RR for the 17 and down vehicles. You can unplug it and pop it out since the 18 will most likely need a second set of can to do the tpms.

once they get it squared away you will end up pinning 2 wires into the 18 pin black plug (most likely) and then wiring that up to the bcm. It may be easier going forward to run both can lines there instead of one going to the telematics and one going to the bcm behind the fusebox. I have to wait and see how engineering wants to do it.

I am still waiting for them to give me some idea how they want to do it, so i can test in my 18 and then i can give them the info on which way would be the easiest for us all.

Maybe contact Crutchfield and let them know. They're pretty keen on having accurate information.

Thanks! That's helpful. Looking forward to seeing those pictures. If I was going to get a Maestro RR compatible headunit it would be the Kenwood you bought.

Were you able to reuse the OEM microphone too? Not sure if that's something the Maestro RR or SU02 harness supports.

Is it possible to completely remove the telematics stuff when installing an aftermarket headunit with a Maestro RR on a 2018 STI with HK audio? I don't care about the Starlink features and declined the trial for it.

Pic is up... need to clean it off, lol.

No, can't use the OEM microphone, no one's cracked that nut. I just mounted the aftermarket one on the steering column, can't even see it.

Yes, you can yank it and toss it, but you need to jump the lines so the front speakers work. I think this was discussed earlier in this thread... or the one with my pics.

another new 2019 WRX sport-tech owner here. had it for about a month now. originally went in to try and get good deal on an end of season 2018, but was too late to pick up the colour i wanted so up-sold to 2019.

relieved i got the 2019 with AA, as the Subaru HK HU is an atrocious thing so i'm glad to have the option to run my phone to the display instead. :P only hassle is that you have to connect your phone by USB to run AA. would have been nice if it could just connect via Bluetooth/WiFi.

biggest gripes of the HK HU aside from the bad user interface is the two dial knobs are at the top of the unit. they are terribly awkward to reach and turn. also the damn E.Q. is a sad 3 band bass/mid/low, and wish there was more tuning options. i've seen past HU photos and they were 5 band E.Q.

The phone basically streams the interface from the phone to the HU, hence the need for a high speed connection like USB. Interestingly, it still uses Bluetooth for the audio... The wireless AA uses a WiFi connection, but the device support is limited, as is the hu support. I'm waiting for my phone to be supported so I don't have to plug my phone in every time.

Aside from the supporting HU, it only requires a phone running Oreo (android 8.0) and up to do Android wireless.

However, I've read some reviews stating that audio fidelity is better with wired AA than AA over wi-fi. Suppose BT is better for sending audio than 802.11 is, or perhaps its just how the HU processes it and the signal environment.

Yep, BUT, it has to be enabled within the device. So any 8.0 device is capable, but most don't support it. I discovered this when my S9 wouldn't connect. :-(

Google is "working with vendors", but who knows when it'll be switched on to a wider audience.

Looks like Subaru put up the 2019 section on the parts site now. There are part numbers for the head units (both nav and non-nav) that's just over $30 more than the 2018 and older units -- still pricey, but at least not much more expensive. Can anyone confirm those are really the 2019 units and not revised variant part numbers of the older units that "fit" the 2019?

I got lucky, then. I have a gen 1 Pixel. Going to get the Pixel 3 when it comes out later this year.

I wanted Apple CarPlay in my 2018 STi so I installed a Pioneer AVIC 8200NEX head unit. It's Android based. $620 for the HU and about $150 for the harness bits, dash surround, etc. No modifications needed to the OEM harness.

Any idea what the difference between 86471VA610 and 86471VA710 is? I'm guessing it's the same part just with 2 different part numbers. I've seen this before on the parts website, just wondering if anyone knew otherwise.

I dug through the 2018 and 2018 service manuals, looks like all important connections and pinouts are the same.
