Default Coilover Help (Cygnus opinions)

Hey all,

So I am looking into Coilovers but I am having a hard time deciding on a pair. My main concern is ride quality. I am wanting to cap my spending around $1500-$1600 range. I am pretty happy with the info I find on Cygnus but I can't find much of it. That said I have never ridden in a WRX/STi with that high of a spring rate and am concerned I won't be thrilled with the ride quality. I have ridden in an STi with HKS HIPER MAX IV GT and was blown away by how it felt. To me it rode better than an STi in stock form( I do realize their spring rates are 6k front and 3k rear not that high). So what I'm looking for is input on how harsh of a ride the Cygnus ride compared to the HKS. I really want to believe what I have read about Cygnus but I would love some input from more people who have a better opinion about the quality and comfort from them. I also can't get thru on the phone to Cygnus so I can't ask these questions directly to them. Just some more info, I am wanting to lower MY03 wagon around 1.25"-1.5" in the front and 1" in the rear and fit a decent wheel and tire under it. I am also not opposed to a better setup with spring and shocks but I can't really find any shocks online for a 03 wagon.

Thanks

Love my X-1 coilovers. Had them for 2 years. Had RCE Tarmac 0 before that and these are smoother and less noisy. I got the long travel version with 7k/6k spring rates. He wasn't offering Hyperco springs at the time I purchased. I would highly recommend those over any other springs. I can't comment how they ride compared to the HKS options. I would definitely call Geoff and talk to him about your desires for ride quality vs performance. He's incredibly knowledgeable and can help you decide on spring rates that will work best for you. Valving can be adjusted to suit your driving style and spring rates. I will definitely be using his stuff on my track car when I get that sorted out.

Honestly, bcracing, as much as they seem on the cheaper end (not quite maxsnappingrods levels of cheap) they do alright, and you can order custom springs with them from memory too

I went ahead and pulled the trigger with Geoff at Cygnus this past Friday (2 days ago.). I intend to do a full review and let the NASIOC world know how I view them. I appreciate your input though, both of you guys.

Thank you for the input man much appreciated. I went with the long travel and Hyperco options and I am looking forward to installing and driving them. Do you by chance have any pictures of your setup?

Of the coilovers specifically, no I don't have pics. Feel free to message me with your number and what pics you want and I can text you some.

A little late, but I have the X-1 Comforts with the long travel struts and the Hyperco 7k/7k springs on my '16 WRX and they are great. I live in St Pete and the roads here suck, so I wanted something better than stock but that would still be compliant enough for my daily driving. I keep them on 8 clicks from full soft and they soak up everything that has been thrown at them without missing a beat. When I turn it up to 16 clicks from full soft to have some fun, they are still pretty compliant, but the car handles amazing. I was VERY hesitant about getting the X-1s and was on the Ohlins train, but decided to take a chance after talking to Geoff and I am glad I did.

Better late than never! I appreciate the info and it just re enforces my thought that I made the right choice. Thanks for the input.

curious to hear how you like them

I ended up with the Cygnus X1-Motorsport version on my 06 STi. Hyperco springs, 9k/8k. I can honestly say they ride about the same comfort wise as my old tiens which were 7k/5k springs, but outperform in terms of handling. They ride better than my old flatout suspension by a LONG shot too, which were also 7k/5k springs. i absolutely love the setup, and will likely have them upgraded when that time comes, but they ride great, and handle well on track. a little stiff for street use, but if i wanted them softer i'd have got the comfort version. and Geoff's customer service was awesome. I really have nothing but good things to say

I absolutely love them. I have ridden in many cars with coilovers and these hands down are the best riding ones I have had the pleasure of owning and riding in. The closest coilover if you want to compare is HKS GT4 in ride quality with similar setting but I feel like those get soft when you start leaning on them hard thru turns. I am super impressed with Geoffs setup. One of the things I was most shocked about was/is the sensitivity of each click. Every click is noticeable until around 20ish and then I couldn't feel much difference with out 2 clicks in-between test drives. I have mine setup at 8 clicks in the front and 9 in the rear and it is very tolerable for daily driving. My wife has not said one negative thing to say about the ride quality and does not mind riding around town doing errands in it. I will second Geoffs customer service too. He will make sure you get any help you need. I will not be straying away from these when its time to rebuild. I'll likely upgrade like Karlot has mentioned.

Sorry for leaving you guys high and dry with feedback. I thought I was subbed to this thread but I guess I wasn't and I never revisited it until know.
