2002 Sport - Is my wiggly CV normal?
Hello. I am very much a novice with car repairs, so please bear with me as I try to provide the right information and ask the right questions.
I have a 2002 Impreza Outback Sport, automatic, with Forester struts/springs. I know the forester part can cause additional wear and tear on the CVs. Both were replaced a few years ago (sorry, I don't know mileage) and they were both making the characteristic clicking noise when turning at the time. Lately, my car has started vibrating under load - at higher speeds on the highway or when going uphill - but not really the same level of vibration all the time. Sometimes it's worse than others, definitely worse on inclines. When I let off on the acceleration the vibration stops, leading me to believe this is not a tire or wheel balance issue. The passenger side strut and ball joint were replaced last weekend. The driver side ball joint was done this past fall and I have a new strut for that side to go on as soon as I have a day free. My son looked at the motor mounts and didn't find anything that indicated a problem there. Right now, everything I'm finding online points to a CV problem. I tried to wiggle them and saw some up & down play on both near the differential (more play on the passenger one), but not knowing if this sort of play is normal, I'm at a bit of a loss. I took a short video and was wondering if someone could tell me if what they see is acceptable. ( I don't even know if posting the link is the right way to do this.) If it is, then I have to wonder if there is something with(in) the differential itself, or U joint, etc. that could be the problem. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. If it is just the CV, I can replace that on my own. If it's a problem with the differential or beyond, I would be way in over my head, but would at least like to be educated so I know what to maybe expect from the repair shop. Thank you in advance for any input. Just editing this to add that I took that video with the car up on jack stands and the wheels off the ground. I don't know if that would have a significant effect on the amount of wiggle or not.
