2004 STi steering leak at line fittings
2004 STi, 168k miles, stock
I have steering fluid leaking where the lines come down thru the engine and connect to the lines on the rack itself. Several years ago I had a leaking pressure line and replaced it with a stainless line that picks up an AN fitting adapter. Never had a problem with it. The leak is definitely coming from that connection or the return line connection. I crawled under there over the weekend and tightened up the pressure fittings. No joy. The AN fitting is a conical fitting with no seal. But I can't recall if the AN fitting interface to the rack has a seal or not. Is there one?

I had to re-read your question because I almost responded with a picture from the factory manual showing all of the P/S lines and fittings. But I saw you were asking about an AN fitting adapter. Is this from a kit that is sold, like the IAG P/S pressure line or an AN adapter you picked up separately like from McMaster-Carr or a hardware company like that?
If it is the IAG line I can check those instructions. |

https://www.iagperformance.com/iag-p...x-2004-07-sti/ I crawled under there again today and it's definitely leaking at the interface between the line fitting on the rack and the AN adapter. It shows a seal, but I don't recall where that goes. |

From the IAG instruction PDF https://www.iagperformance.com/conte...-5900-v.01.pdf :
"1. Remove the factory O-ring from the high-pressure connection at the rack. Then, place/stretch the Viton seal over the line/connection at the rack. Next, reinstall the O- ring over the high-pressure connection at the rack. From here, you will want to thread the female-end of the male- to-female fitting onto the rack connection. Tighten this connection to 10.8 ft-lb. (see picture)" I did this a few years ago and remember it not being the most clear written procedure to follow without an illustration. "The order of installation for the rack-side of the connection is as follows: straight-fitting on line > male-to- female fitting > factory O-ring > Viton seal > male fitting on rack" |

Update:
It was every bit the PITA I recalled, but I got it apart and replaced the o-ring. Going on day 4 and thus far no leaks! Again, I appreciate the help with the instructions posted. |

No problem. I'm in total agreement about where the lines attach at the steering rack being a pain in the ass. When I first installed the braided line with AN adapter I incorrectly diagnosed air in the system as and inspected/removed/reinstalled the fitting a few times to the point where I stripped the threads and had to order a new one. Only to find out it was the pump that went bad at the same time I installed the new line. 1 year after this I had the engine out for a timing belt change, and the exposed and easy to access power steering lines staring back at me, how easy it would have been to do it then!!
Glad everything is working out. So annoying to finish all that work and find out that there's still problems. |
