Inconsistent vibration at highway speeds. 2011 wrx
I am having trouble figuring out an ongoing problem I’ve been having for some time now.
My car will intermittently vibrate in the steering while going over 50mph. When I’m accelerating upwards of 80mph the steering wheel usually shakes more and the steering wheel will start to have a “loose” feeling like the front end feels light. I feel like it’s definitely something in the front end. I have replaced inner tie rods, outer tie rods, ball joints, completely new steering rack and bushings, re balanced tires, and torqued everything in the front end yet I continue to have this odd feeling. It’s very weird to me because it’s somewhat inconsistent. It is usually apparent but will sometimes go away completely for a short distance. The only think I haven’t replaced is the hub assembly’s but I checked them and they don’t seem to have any slop. I’m stumped on what to try next.

That sounds like a really imbalanced wheel to me. I had it happen once after a snow drifting session from ice buildup. Have you tried rotating tires to see if it still occurs?

I tried balancing wheels, swapping back to front, etc. I even borrowed a buddies wheel set to see what happens and the problem is still present.
I’m a starting to think maybe it could be worn control arm bushings, which could explain the inconsistent wander/vibration feel. Perhaps that’s what I’ll try replacing next |

Have you visually inspected them? I had an old outback that needed control arm bushings or wheel bearings(it saw a LOT of offroad use) and the control arms were usually pretty obvious. I had almost forgotten about that, it has been a few years since I needed to do those.
Also, have you checked the balljoints? I had one fail that gave almost the same symptoms as you're listing. |

Yeah I’ve looked at them and they look to be in good shape but who knows until you take the control are completely off. I should get around to the control arm bushings next week and see if it fixed the problem. And yes I have replaced the ball joints with no change in symptoms. |

Check your rear drive shaft, had a wrx doing just that. Bearings at support were bad causing the drive shaft to get out of time.

blown shocks feel that way as well. If they are stock they should have been replaced a few years ago already...

Bumping this thread back from the dead as I have the same exact problem and it’s driving me crazy. I also drive a 2011 wrx. Did you ever figure out the cause?

Engine / transmission mounts can also give a vibration at certain revs
