Default Sti on the quarter mile

I finally put my car on the track and I've read the Sti can pull off a 13.1 on the quarter mile. I ended up doing a 14.4 the first time and a 14.6 the second time. Admittedly this had been my first time on the track, but I expected to at least pull off a 13.9. Anyone got any advice on what I could do to improve my time, or what I may have done wrong?

Ok, first off you have to launch on the rev limiter. I'd do WOT from either the first yellow light or just after both cars are fully staged depending on if you can trust that the time between fully staging and the tree dropping isn't really long.

Then lauch with the DCCD in just above fully open (2nd light from the bottom). Use a smooth quick clutch release that is all but a drop. Also inflate the tires to the high 30's or 40psi to make sure you get clean wheelspin instead of wheelhop if you drop it too quick.

Then DON'T lift the throttle on shifts. The ECU will take care of that stuff for you. honestly it will.

I am no drag racer either and had a similar experience.

My first run was 15.1 - I bogged the launch.

Then I started playing with the DCCD and sure enough on the second lowest (most rearward) setting I ran a 13.8. Again I'm no drag racer and this was my first time so I was happy.

I will try the no lift at gear changes -

I ran a 14.7 my first time out. I pooched all my launches and I tried all the different settings on the DCCD. Each time I was using the rev dump method. I have recently discovered the best way (for me) to launch this thing. I actually feather the clutch a little bit. Not for very long or the clutch will burn. I rev the engine to about 2500 and match my right foot to left (total time to let out clutch about 1 second). Once you get a feel for the right rate it is amazing! I was lined up against a harley at a stop light where the speed limit was 55mph (in a rural area). For some reason he wanted to race me so I tried this method and holy cow the car jumped off the line and just grabbed like a motha. There was no bog and I was shifting into second before he had even rolled 5 feet. I smoked him

P.S. I did not exceed the speed limit for those flame happy do gooders out there.

honestly the rev limiter is where its at... you can build boost thanks to the "load" the limiter creates. I see about 5psi sitting on the line.

Your 60ft needs work. Get that down to a 1.8 or less and you will be well into the 13's.

13.25@103 last night with 1.85 60ft

The car can do 1.7s so figure 13 flat or maybe dare i say 12.99?

Keep DCCD auto and slip the clutch fast at 5500rpm-6000rpm

Do any of you smell something weird when you launch your STi hard? Not a burning clutch smell - I can't explain it - kind of like a swampy, moldy smell in a way. I've never smelled anything like it. I've noticed it a couple of times.

Its just the stinky Subaru clutch. I've never smelled a clutch like it before either. It smells like something died.

Last night I went out and had a little fun of my own at WIR in Kaukauna Wisco. Best time was 13.049 @102 MPH. 60' time was 1.75. Cool temps and low humidity.
I used the advise posted here and launched on the rev limiter and had the diff set at the second from the bottom setting. No weird smells, just a great launch.
I had a 50/50 mix of 100 octane race gas and 93 pump gas.

I think 12's can be had easily with some lighter tires. I should have tried taking the power steering belt off and taking out the air filter element.

Biggest dissappointment fo the night was no EVOs in sight

So when you guys launch at the rev limiter you pretty much just hold the throttle to the floor and slip the clutch? Seems like that would be hard on the driveline to me...

Stock STi times I want to hear about have to be in daily driver form. All belts in place, no race fuel, all seats in place, etc.

Wow, you are my hero! Actually, I think your full of it. You probably ran a 14.049 but didn't have on your glasses so you "thought" you saw 13s.

BTW, was that leaded race gas?

Ok its hold the throttle to the floor from start to finish with no let up... but you don't slip the clutch much. If you have the boost built up and let it out right the car is upto speed very quickly so its just a smooth takeoff. If you do it too quick you will buy some wheel hop or wheel spin. One the rear diff doesn't like the other the tires don't like. DCCD auto is also a great way to insure a bad start.

I went to the track today, my best time is 13.740
reaction 1.141
60ft 1.810
330ft 5.640
1/8et 8.838
1/8mph 77.33
1/4et 13.740
1/4mph 97.59

But i have a question, do you guys shift to 5th gear, because when i almost at the end i hit the fuel cut at 4th gear around 7200rpm. do i shift to 5th or i keep going.

launch at 4500rpm and slip the clutch.
DCCD set at second last light.

why you guys can hit 100 mph but i can't , is the 60ft will effect the 1/4 mph.Sorry to trouble your guys, because i am new in the game. Thanks a lot

OK Ha I got the race gas from you so you should know it is unleaded!
As for it being in street trim, I took out the spare, I didn't gut the intereior
Is the launch abusive? The car still drives the same as before and heck if you can't beat on it once in awhile, why have one? New cars come with warrranties, that is the beauty of one. To do it contuenually would probably break something but 5-10 times a year shouldn't be enough to wreck the car.
I wanted to have abaseline for the car so that I know it is running as strong as it should for my real goal which is autocrossing. I am going to Nationals and want to be sure my power is where it should be, and it is!!

I was just saying that I like to see non-gutted car...daily driver trim 1/4 mile times. I never said or tried to imply that you gutted the car.

Anyway, the 1/4 won't tell you much about were your power should be in auto-x. You can have a 11.88sec/114mph STi and get your tale dusted in auto-x by a 13.00sec/105mph STi with a driver of the same skill level. Why? Because the laggy turbo of the faster 1/4-mile car. Plus, you'll barely even touch 3rd in auto-x. You need at leat 5 gears in the 1320.

You can't just make a statement like that. Tell us why you feel it's bad and what you setting works for you and why.

Dave's an OK driver.

You have to shift to 5th before the end of the 1/4. I have a 6MT in my WRX and I can't do the 1/4 without shifting into 5th. That's where you are losing your trap speed, since it's averaged over the last portion (100 ft?) of the track.

60' time shouldn't have much bearing on your trap speed but banging off the rev limiter during the trap speed box will.

Default Just got back from 75/80 in MD

I never raced at the strip before, watched many but never ran. So, tonight was my first time (so to speak).

First time out I blew it completely. I can't think of anything else I could have botched. I was slow at the light, I ran into rev limit before shifting (at least twice), and I thought the 1/8th mile was the finish line. DOH!

Reaction time was 1.0612, 60' was 1.9234, 1/8th was 9.2276, and I finally passed through the traps at 15.6911 @ 65.8988 (I had probably already hit the brakes).

I think I thoroughly embarassed my wife and my two sons who were there watching me run.

Second time out I made up for it. My reaction time still sucked (1.1910), but I had a decent 60' @ 1.792. My 1/8th was 8.5281 and I hit the 1/4 in 13.4916 @95.76 MPH.

I don't have any idea what RPM I launched at, it was not at rev limit - and I let the clutch out pretty fast. I sort of "used the force" (heh), I reved it pretty high and then pressed the go pedal all the way and let out the clutch at the same time - sort of an even exchange motion. All four tires chirped on the launch briefly. No smelly clutch - unless I left the odiferous cloud behind me, but I don't think so.

This did not seem hard on the car at all, it could do this all week and be happy.

I have no idea who or what I ran against, but he (or she) did a 18.4 @ 76.0985. I just recall thinking damn - he fell asleep at the light - as I watched it shrink rapidly in the rearview. Later I find out I slept at the light too! heh, gotta work on that reaction time.

I've heard many people say that 75/80 is a quarter second or more slower than most tracks because it is slightly uphill near the 1/8th. I don't know about that, but if it's true then I would have run closer to 13.2. Yeah, yeah and if wishes were horses...

By the way this was all with the DCCD in auto. So much for a bad launch being guarantted when the DCCD is in auto.

I know I could do better if I practiced this, maybe I'll try again next week.

Oh, and this car is basically bone stock. Only mods are that the intake resonator has been removed and anti-thump bushings were added to the rear diff front mount. I was carrying the jack, spare, and other standard equipment and I weigh 300 lbs. A skinny guy who pulls all the junk from the trunk should be able to get easily into the 12s.
