to the best of my knowledge, yes. I was just trying to warn you that it's a lot of extra holes that will be uncovered.

Gotcha,

I was aware of that though. I found some good nylon hole plugs at Sears Hardware (on the spinning display of grommets, etc)

they sit pretty flush and are just bigger than the mounting holes. i don't think they'll be that noticable once they're painted silver.

If it looks like$ # ! t, i'll probably try to find a trunk at the junkyard or something (or maybe just buy a new one, factory painted)

I do want to keep the big wing though, it does kind of grow on you a bit. Just trying to be a little more low key though, I already got pulled over once. 50 in a 25 (late at night, no houses)
Cop let me off with a warning, though!!

Yeah-
thanks for the info though

1st I will respond to the techincal side of the install

1) Wing removal- Remove nuts, then using a special Snap On tool specifically designed for this aplication the safety strap was removed. (IE Death Wheel)

2) The caps are made from billit Aluminum that was drilled & countersunk for the flathead internal wrenching fasteners. The lower elemnent of the wing was drilled & rivnuts installed for the fasteners to thread into.

Simple

These were only prototypes to see how fisable it was to make caps for the lower element since none are currently available commercialy. I am in the process of getting a quote to have some done up at a CNC shop in polished & color coded. Check back for details.

Now I shall respond to the visual critasism-

1) No matter what bull you have been fed by SOA, the upper element is functionless, even at high speeds.

2) I was pulled over in a group of traffic where everyone was going 15mph over the limit in a 40 zone, after taking it in the shorts, I asked the officer who was quite candid, why me? "That huge wing you bolted on makes you a target" enough said. Now at least I'll be able to see him comming before he parks in the trunk

3) Trunk swapping. As is I can always reattach in the future when it comes time to sell. If the time ever comes.

4) New Trunk - $250 + New Spoiler - $350 + Paint - $300.
My fix cost me less than 3 Tanks of Gas.

5) The look. While I will be the first to admit it is far from ideal, it is a far cry better than the 'handbag handle' look that the car was originally equipped with. (Hows that for a masculine look)

All of the people I have come in contact with, most of whom are in the custom car or motor racing buisness agree that I have improved, but not prefected the overall look of the car.

Thanks for all the input.

On the cop magnet note:

Don't speed, or don't get caught. The fact you have a bright blue import is going to make you a cop magnet.

Though, you spent the money for the car, you can do as you wish. No reason to get offended that only 10% of you posters like your look. You did post it up here, people are going to comment.

Mine are evenly and heavily "powder coated" with brake dust, to a nice gunmetal shade, as advertised by Subaru It's a nice change to see some rims that are clean

Since when are you allowed to make cheap shots, and no one else is? IMHO, the only balls this car has are beneath the hood. Everything outside is free reign. To me this solution is better than putting a carbon fiber cross braced rice magnet on the trunk. As for the other lines/styling - I only care if they affect my view from the driver's seat. There are only a handful of cars I would go see in an art museum, and the STi doesn't even come close. It looks more like a Hyundai than a Pininfarina, Bugatti, or Lichtenstein hand painted BMW M1.

And I really pity everyone that doesn't think of this car as only a machine, because it sure is fun to flog. And if you like to flog your friends, family, or beloved pet (however you think of this car), I really don't want to know.

I mean all the power to you if it works for you. But from an observers point of view it looks like you couldn't make up your mind to go wingless or not.

I don't think it looks too bad. But, I like the 'Industrial Look'. In Racing, form follows function. My racecar is like that. Lot's of Socket-Head-Allen-Cap Screws. Ahh...and rivets, bare aluminum.

In general, I hate the ricer look on other cars with as many curves as possible where they don't belong.

This is an issue that has been beaten worse then any other dead horse on this board....unless you put your car in a wind tunnel ans tested it, I will stick with the opinions from our friends in Japan, who do not work for Subaru, and have more hours on the track in these cars then we do on the streets.

Exclamation Ok already...

Come on guys, please give this man a break.
Yes he modded his car and he likes the end result.
Enough already...

Some of us don't care for it while some of us do.
Some of us had similar ideas and some of us don't, or after seeing these results won't.

Either way dude was only showing his handiwork and looking for a bit of friendly feedback. I'm very sure he did not intend to fan the flames of fire that he's been getting from folks.
Give him a break.

I've seen people post some ugly as rims, radios and evene stupid looking muffler installs they melt the rear bumper. Yet no one jumped on these people for ruining the looks, lines, or feel of the car. Keep in mind beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Further, as enthusiats the underlying theme & _emotion_ toward 'hot rodding' one's car is to make changes & edits that suit our own individual tastes and needs. Whether that be doing a red light mod, or swapping out the hoses for colored Samco, or upgrading to 18's as some folks have done or even swapping the interior out for leather surfaces in various colors.

Doing any one of these does not 'ruin' the car nor does it make one's car better or worst than another, stock or modified. It just makes that car different or even unique. If the owner is happy with his handiwork then thats enough reason in my book to do the job.

Some of you guys have acted as if he shaved & channeled the car or painted it pink and installed Gucci leather all over the interior, which no doubt will happen as soon as Brian 'The Birdman' Williams aka 'Baby' gets wind of this car. But seriously, removing the wing, modifying the wing, redesigning the wing, or even installing a totally different wing (see STi & LT1's car) is entirely fine if that's what floats the owner boat. if you don't like then don't do it and move on with life.

So lets let it go and support our fellow STi owners rather than put them down and backbite. This thread reminds me of some stuff I used to see in the BMW forums, which is not good. The STi is not sacrosanct people, and if an owner wants to modifiy it to his owne tastes and you don't like. Just say; 'Hey, I'm glad you like it but its not for me' and don't go jumping all over a guy (or gal) trying to ruin their week and make them feel bad or stupid for what obviously involved a bit fo work, research and resources.

Besides, its not like he hung fuzzy dice from his rear view and installed whitewall tires on gold Dayton hundred spokes.

to add to Janq's good point...

It's also always impressive to me when someone turns an idea into reality, regardless of how the end turns out. This person custom fabricated his own pieces to do what he wanted...which is way beyond what most people do to their cars to chase the look they want. This alone deserves more respect than he's been getting, regardless of whether or not you like the resulting look.

My friends laughed at me because I 'red light' modded my car including the dome, map, trunk and lic plate bulbs. The glove compartment is next and I'm thinking about doing the reverse bulbs in red too.

Lord knows I like some wacky stuff and have had even worst ideas. I've been trying to figure out how to apply custom 'angel eyes', in red of course, to my the stock STi high beam assy.

I'm sure though folks will hate on me big time if/when I get it all figured out & functional.

Suddenly I feel as though a burdon has been lifted off of my back.

I was begining to think I should be accoiateing with evo owners

I realize I jumped on a grenade by being the first to try what so many have toyed with, but I was not expecting such a harsh reaction. It is good to know that people who own these cars are reasonable.

As to how I keep my wheels looking good, when I first got the car I spent around 4 hours one Saturday appling a 3M wax that we use at the shop that has a teflon base. All I do is hose off the wheels once or twice a week. THe wax reducesses build up and alows for easy clean up.

Race,

3M is a long time customer of mine but they sell over 52K products (and growing). I'm too lazy to surf their automotive site (On my off time I do nothing even remotely related to work), so would you mind sharing the name or better yet 3M ID number for this product (back label & typically 12 digits). I'd like to order some of this magic juice for my own use...

OH, BTW over dinner tonight with some local NASIOC boys ('STi & LT1' and his crew) this thread and your mod came up. By and large folks admired the efforts you wne through to produce your end caps and the quality of the work. Again, kudos for the effort. The only design comment proposed was that it would look better if you had the end caps anodized to color match your car.
Otherwise myself and others admired the craftsmanship and your effort to make real what others had only talked about doing prior.

Regards,

- Janq

Tonight I met a couple of Subie cuties driving a stock 2.5RS who really liked my 'redlight' mods. So much so they asked me to help them mod their own ride. We exchanged info and I'll hook'em up later with info & direction.

Lesson #1: He who laughs last laughs loudest.
Another one 'Momma Janq' used to say.

Only thing is too bad I'm happily married and they are just three years shy of half my age.
But thats okay as I'd be glad to help out a fellow Subie fan, and flirt with the young folk. No Kobe Bryant plays here though.

Lesson #2: Attention getters get attention
I just made that one up, but hell it sounds cool enough.

I bet if Race took his car to a show he'd be the man for having an STi (), having it modded (), and having a unique mod that no one else in North America has or thought of ()!

Advantage: Race & folks that dare to be different.

Damn you guys are HARSH!

Personally i doubt 90% of people that drive will use the wing on the STI as it was designed. So removing it will save weight and air drag

And to me stealth on the streets keeps cops off my a$$. Dont give cops a reason to light you up.

I think it looks fine. When i purchase an STI in a few months (waiting for some positive solutions for cali gas) I will be looking for a smaller aftermarket wing or doing exactly what race did.

And as janq said, he did it himself from scratch. Almost no one does that anymore, its follow this and copy that.

Good job racer

Default Wing Functionality

Actually some of you may be suprised at what the wing may be doing. It might not contribute much down force during everyday driving but it may reduce drag. In fact (at least on my RS) it reduces drag over the tail of the car. Without the wing, the air stalls over the rear window. With the wing, the air gets a bit more turbulent and air flows down the window and off the trunk lid. Someone on this site took tape and ribbon ,and with a friend with a digital camera in another car, took photos of the wind pattern over the car with and without the wing while driving and it illustrated what I wrote above. Also there are quite a few cars out there with functional wings. Audi TT's spring immediately to mind. Didn't thay even have a recall to install a trunk lip spoiler??

In europe the TT had a recall for suspension and the wing.

If i remember correctly because of the shape of the car and the suspension it would bounce and the car could actually flip from a combination of lift and the supension pushing the car up.

In the US it was not a mandatory recall since most people here dont get up to the necessary speed for it to happen.

This info is from a friend thats a mechanic at an audi dealer, we talked about it a while ago.

Could you explain more about this stalled air vs turbulant air
