Default How can the US Sti be put in the same class as the US Evo!!

How can the US Sti be put in the same class as the US Evo.

We will now have a 2.5 STi that is USA only so that Subaru can market it as a Evo killa when the Evo is still a 2.0L car. In Europe and Japan the competition will still go on but Subaru have seemed to moved away from the're roots to produce a car that is market orientated to give cars from all classes a run for there money.

The Evo and STi have always been good competitive competition due to the fact they were limited to production models required for WRC. The WRC limits to a 2.0L engine and the two Japanese car makers thrived on this and gave Japan and Europe some great cars. Now for the USA Subaru have bumped the STi to a 2.5L engine because Americans love there muscle cars with lots of HP but the real fun is what will fade away.

I'm happy the STi is now official and may look at one in a years time but I'm not putting a downer on this but we will miss out on the real competition between the two cars that Japan and Europe will still have. This too me is why the cars are so fun to own. Not to be the best on the block

Well,

What do you say about the 22b? (2.2L). Even after making the 22b, they are closer to their real racing roots than Mitsu ever was (especially since they aren't in WRC for 2003). Heck, going by competition, you would think Hyundai was ahead of Mitsu since they were ahead of them this year.

(Hyundai Accent vs. Subaru STi)

Realistically to acheive anywhere-near-WRC performance levels you need more than 2.0 displacement...those cars don't have to meet emissions, fuel-economy or longevity requirements.
I'm sure Mitsu will go ahead an increase displacement for the EVO 9 - or maybe 81/2 now that Scoobie has kicked them in the knashers. After all....the Lancer EVO VIII is not a WRC rally car anyway as I believe Mitsu has dropped out.

What Im afraid of is that Subaru has just unleashed everything they have for our market. What happens if Mitsu decides to do something to up their hp in the next model year and surpasses Subaru. What will they be able to do? Its like the WRX came out and enjoyed success for 2 years and then SOA was able to bring in more performance. So too will Mits have their EVO now and in a year or two bring in some EVO that will knock the socks off of STi?

Im sure its nothing, but it still is in the back of my head.

In order to race at WRC, the engine size must be < 2L.

Mitsu won't bring anything bigger if the EVO doesn't do well in the first place. Subaru was smart because they got the WRX here long before any competition was available. Think Sony Playstation vs. MS Xbox. No matter what the competition offers, the WRX was here first, and it's a damn good car.

I don't think the EVO will do nearly as well as the WRX did in its first couple of years.

I don't think so... they are both going after different markets. Mitsu is going after mtv/FATF/GT3 group, whos more likely to buy a civic or what ever cool car they see on tv that week. Suby is going after more mature drivers who are thinking more along the lines of... an m3 or a vett.

how many track days can I afford this year vs. how much can I pump up the boost on saturday night....

This will always happen. It's technology and it will progress. The WRX was king, then the EVO was king (for 2 whole days ) and now the STI will be king for a while. Soon enough though, that will change and it's ok. It's just a car, it can be replaced with the latest and greatest if that's your desire. Just remember, there will ALWAYS be someone faster.

Um, I think you're missing the point. The Lancer Evo and the WRX and its variants have been competitors for the facts that they are turbo, AWD, approx the same size, and priced comparably. They were also their respective manufacturer's weapon of choice for the WRC.

It had nothing to do with displacement. Nothing at all. So, the Supra and the RX-7 weren't competitors since the Supra was an I-6 and the RX-7 was a rotary? I think not.
