The twin-scroll helped driveability with the 2.0-liter turbo engine. The STi gets better than a twin-scroll...a 2.5-liter turbo motor. There will be low-end torque for days.

Twin scroll? Who wants VALLEY OF DEATH?!
I think that image is the best example. |

At this stage the twin scroll looks like JDM STi only.
A better question is: does the USDM STi have equal length headers. I speculate not. |

Jon [in CT]: OOPS, my bad. All this excitment got my panties in a twist. Currently there are about 230 members in the STI forum alone

I doubt they went to the trouble of a twin scroll setup as the extra displacement should do the trick alone. That would be fine with me as the twin scroll means equal length exhaust means no distinct boxer exhaust beat. I love the traditional sound of the boxer.

You know, I wouldn't be suprised if the sti came with the (nothing special) VF30 turbo. Even that should have no problem making peak torque by 4000 rpm on a 2.5L.

Okay, stupid question time...
What is the difference between the normal turbo and a twin scroll?

I was reading in Evo about the new JDM STi that the exhaust pulses that give Subaru motors their distinctive rumble are detrimental to spooling the turbo, so a new set of headers and the twin scroll eliminate the pulses for noticeably quicker spool... as well as the distinctive Scooby exhaust note.

Since this engine peaks out torque at 4000 rpm, it sounds like turbo lag won't even be noticeable. Beauty of a 2.5. You'll feel the torque pulling your butt into the seat until 4000 rpm, and the turbo will probably be spooling by then to keep it in the seat until you shift again. No need for twin scroll or twin turbo with that.

A little birdy told me it would be twin-scroll. All STi motors are moving to this design.

RidinLow: I think I read that same article. They designed the headers to that the exhaust pulses matched each other (or cancelled themselves). It still feels like a subaru engine but sounds like something we havnt heard before.

Speaking of which, I'd really like to hear .WAV files of the STi7 vs the STi8 2.0L vs the STi8 2.5L.

The car is just begging for a turbo upgrade - think PE1820, APS SR40, or AVO garret hybird. Add a fuel upgrade, FMIC, exhaust, ecu/remap and some odds and ends, this will actually put you up to the 400+ hp level, fairly reliably. Kevin |
