There Were two surprises at the show. Mitsu surprised Subaru with the Evo's price. Subaru Surprised Mitsu with the 2.5 and 300 HP/TRQ.

My friend there said each Company had a rep watching the Others launch. The SOA guys were watching the Web at the time and the color drained out of there face when the price was introduced.

During the STi Unvailing, the Mitsu people came over from the Endevor set up and could be seen mouthing *** when they annouced 2.5 Litters.

It's all a big game. And we are the winners.

one local dealer told me last night that they don't have a price, but have already taken a deposit on one (been holding it for a year or so)...

anyway, they told me to expect 5k over MSRP... pretty bold to tell me how much you plan on gouging your customers...

Not if you go to a good dealer. Mastro (in Tampa) told me they'd sell me an STi (a week before the announcement) for MSRP; not over and not under.

Sure, I might have to wait in line behind the 10 other people (at that time, probably more by now) who have already signed up with them, but if I wanted to get in line I could have one.

However I think I'm going to go for the '04 WRX. In fact, moments after the price is announced I'll be on my way to Mastro to put a deposit down on the one from the first shipment!

Oh, gee! Now I finally have to decide which color. ARRRGGG.

That will kill ALL WRX sales. Would you pay $25K for a WRX when you could get an STi for $29,300? SoA can make a killing on this car - they've got a captive market who will gladly pay for the chance to own an M3/M5/350Z/RX8 killer.
But the same can be said for the 2.5RS and WRX. why woudl anyone spend $20K on a 2.5Rs when they can get a WRX for $24K. it is easy, some people do NOT have the money. $4000-$5000 extra is an easy $100-$120 a month, when you do not take into consideration the extra Insurance.

The STI will NOT hurt WRX sales in my opinion, even if it does come in under $30K (which I am hoping it will, but do not expect it to)

There are dealers that only sell at MSRP. When I went looking for a 350z, I had dealers that would sell at MSRP, but I would have to wait on the track model.

Do you know what the EVO surprise was? Elsewhere in the world, the EVO the US is getting is a $24K car.

Guys,
I thought i'd add my 2 cents.. I just went to my dealer and he said the STI would be around 32-35K.. Honestly, I don't think he really knew.. I'm not sure any of the dealers really know yet. I am as anxious to find out as the rest of you all. I think I knew more than him from the info on this site.. Funny.. anyway, we'll all find out soon enough.

I think, though, that that 2-3 grand difference is enough to make alot of people shy away from the STi. Especially the market that the WRX is catering towards. Most of the people that come in off of the street to buy an Impreza will not go for the STi (too hardcore for them) and will instead take the car that they can get their sunroof, radio, softer suspension, etc.

If you can get the car for under 30k, definately get it in writing. Getting your deposit back is a moot point if you wind up paying $34-36k for the car, if you can get on "the list"... At any rate, that's probably BS.

As far as the cost of the STI vs. an LL Bean, let's compare apples to apples. They are really two cars with little in common besides being AWD and a Subaru product. The STI seems VERY pricey when you consider the list of standard options vs. the Bean. Vs. a 350Z or a Porsche it seems like a deal, but that is the real competition for the STI, not a Subaru wagon. Let's keep in mind that the Impreza is the entry level Subaru, and the STI is a fully modded Impreza. If you were a Toyota person, would you compare price between a Sequoia Limited, to a limited run, hopped up Celica w/300hp for $40k? Not likely, they are two totally different vehicles.

That being said...

If you compare an LL Bean to a Volvo XC or an Audi Allroad it's a steal with all of it's features, and has the others beat by at least $5-7k or more, and will be much more reliable as well The Outback does have a use for lots of people all over the place, and is a deal. So is the Impreza...

What if there was an STI Outback?... Just kidding..
I'll settle for the EG33 in mine.
