why no subaru wheels?
so... what's wrong with the US that subaru can't put the same wheels that they ship to everywhere else? not that i mind the BBS rims on the new sti, but i'm sure it increases the price; and on the WRX it's 2+k for anything but crap 16" rims(that ruin the entire look of the car imho). i love the stock 17" subaru rims that everyone else gets... what's up?

refocus...
ok, so no real responses yet. i'll reiterate in case i wasn't clear:
on all other non-US STI's, they have the subaru 5star 17" rims. these are also fitted on all non-US WRX's (but in silver and i believe narrower??) why does subaru not put these on US-spec cars? baggedrexondubs: they do clear the brembo brakes (see any other market STI) rexxer: i care, that's why i'm asking. we get crappy 16" on the WRX, and we're gonna get those same ugly BBS 17" they have offered on the WRX as a 2.5k option on the STI (no- the ones in all the pics so far are 18" from the JDM sti-cspec and are an option--2+k). obviously this allows subaru to make more money on selling these rims as options... what i'm wondering is if there is actually a good reason why they do this (besides profit). yes the new sti is awesome. but that doesn't mean i don't have questions. thank you and goodnight. |

What proof do you have that the BBS 17" wheels that the USDM STi will come standard with raise the cost of the car? Are you making that assumption based on the rediculous cost of the optional forged BBS wheels for the past WRXs? If you are there is a flaw in your logic. If you have some figures that show the car is more expensive due to the BBS wheels, I'd love to see it.
Since SOA/FHI haven't even set prices for the STi yet, I find it a little presumptuous to say that these wheels raise the price of the car. These wheels may well be lighter than the UKDM/JDM STi wheels, too. - Trent |

1) Saving weight using the forged BBS wheels instead of cast Subie wheels. I'm not sure whether the weight savings is any more than 3-4lbs including tires, but if they took out the radio to save weight, it may be possible. 2) The BBS wheels sets the NA-spec STi apart, from the rest of the world's - tells the rest of the world 'Look at my 2.5L STi!' Here is the scoop, the BBS is more expensive since it is forged. We are getting the standard JDM STI wheels and the BBS will be optional. That goes the same with tires.
Standard (non forged): Cheap Option (forged): Expensive |

I am sure if you buy an STI you can sell the BBS wheels for a nice chunk of change and buy whatever wheels you want. The regular WRXs coming with 16" wheels and crappy tires and that may be a cause for complaint, but as for the STI coming with forged wheels from the world's leading wheel manufacturer, standard, now that is cause for celebration. If these wheels raise the price of an STI $1,000, big deal. Buy forged aftermarket BBS wheels with a good set of tires in the aftermarket, and you'll be paying atleast $5,000.

misunderstood the first post - thought you were talking about the other non-sti 17" wheels which i believe don't clear the brembos.

yanrin/hanzo: thanks for the thougths... i have a question as to the lightness of the bbs vs. the sub rims... i remember reading that the subaru rims were some of the lightest rims made--not sure if this is still the case on the 5x2 star pattern, but i know it was on my 99rs rims.
dsmawd/WRXURV8: i was not saying that the 17" rims (whatever they will be--stock sube rims as hanzo states, or the current BBS rims optional on the wrx, since it is yet to be stated) add to the sti price... i was saying that a.) the rest of the world does get the 17" sube rims standard on the WRX--- we get 16" with crap tires, which means you have to spend 1-2k just to have performance tires. b.) the new sti does not come with the 18" rims that everyone is seeing in the photos-- those are sweet -- but they are optional. i hope hanzo is right and they do bring over the stock sti 17" rims. otherwise i will be taking WRXURV8's advice and selling the 17" BBS's. |
