Default Break in Period 500 or 1000miles?

I have been hearing many myths or shall I say ways to break in car. I have heard that I shouldn't rev over four grand until I have reached 500 and some people have said 1000 miles. What happens during this period of time. I have also heard there is no reason to break in car since the factory tests all the cars before they are shipped. Please someone shed light on this issue for me .. sorry if this is a redundant issue but I want to break it in properly..
Thanks guys

Personally I'd follow SOA's break-in guidelines outlined in the owner's manual (just to be on the safe side).

There are many threads on this. Do a search for break-in.
The recommended break in time is 1000 miles as per the owners manual (like all subarus it would seem).

Opinions vary on breakin, but the idea is not to push the car too hard until the various systems of the car (engine, tranny, brakes, etc) have had a time to 'break-in'. Others believe there is a specific, quick bedding process can be used instead.
