'06-'07 NA STi?
A new rule has been proposed for the WRC which would replace the current turbo 4-cyl with naturally aspirated engines for the 2006 season.
If the rule passes, what do you think the chances of us getting a NA 6 or 8 cyl STi and EVO are in the next four or five years? Or do you think Subaru and Mitsubishi would continue with the current engine designs for many years to come, regardless of the WRC rules? Keep in mind I am only considering this assuming the rule will pass. I know the likelihood of that is slim, since most manufacturers would potentially lose billions in engine R&D. I think they will fight it with everything they have (especially Ford and Skoda with new designs). Also, as a side note, would you prefer to have a turbo 4 STi, or a NA 6 or 8 cyl STi?

Unless they allow the lightening of the cars to fit the larger engines, then the WRC cars could become a lot heavier depending on whether they go with a v6 or v8. I'd love to have a v8, because I just sold my 68 camaro for the STi and really miss the sound of the lumpy idle but I doubt that subaru would take the time to develope something like a v8 or even a really unorthodox boxer 8. They'll probably just develope the h-6 in the crappy forester or whatever that l.l. bean trash is.

We will possibly see a Turbo H6 in the Legacy in the next few years. I imagine that would beat the piss out of your STi. ~~Quentin |

Smooth Acceleration
One thing that I have enjoyed/hated in my collection of M cars is their smooth acceleration generated by the straight 6. The good here is that there isn't a lot of being jerked around which means it's easier to control the vehicle. Hench this would make less experienced drivers more able to pilot WRC vehicles.
The big disadvantage (in my book, granted that weight is the real disadvantage) is that smooth acceleration is so boring. Getting your neck snapped back is fun. |

Bad idea.
I bought the WRX because of the TURBO! The AWD capabilities is icing on the cake IMHO. Turbo charging is a far more effecient way of getting more hp out of a small lighter engine. Damn I still miss the "turbo era" F1 cars of the 80's!!! |

Having the turbo MAKES the rally cars. I seriously thing that is half of the appeal of watching it for me, is hearing it and the noises accociated with an race tuned turbo engine. It seems to me that having an NA engine that still made the same hp, just wouldn't be as "fun".
I wonder if this has anything to so with unreliability/heat issues. It has to be frustrating when your team looses a rally, just cause your engine overheats or somthing mechanical breaks. |

Interesting - no turbo. I can see that, thoguh - take a look at Citoroen (where is the spell check?) in 2001, it's an NA 2 litter, FWD (lots lighter advantage, though), and those civic-alikes beat the crap out of all other turbo 4wds. Something like 12,000 rpm, and only on paved road races, but still it proved that it could get some speed. As Group B monsters went down the tube earlier, I could see FIA throwing out turbos as well. Now that's really F1 on the dirt.

Do you have a link to this info or is it just word of mouth from person to another (we all know how jumbled info can get after a couple people)...

I see it on WorldRallyNews.com, interesting though doesn't sound like too sure of a deal at this point, just throwing ideas on the table to change things up. I doubt that would seriously change the Subaru line-up and engine development as we know it. At least for the next 5 years give/take.

I still think its more than likely that Subaru will continue to sell turbo charged 4's for some time no matter what the WRC rules are. Its not like the current engines are all that much like the race versions anyway...
One really is not realated to the other, its like saying the NASCAR has changed its rules and is allowing turbo V6's instead of NA 8's. Its not like GM or Ford are going to change their production cars for the new rules. Its not like any of their production cars resemble mechanically anything on the NASCAR circuit. Just like subie's WRC car really other than sharing the body and maybe similar displacement has a lot in common with the street version. |

I read about this subject in Autoweek a number of weeks ago and they made it sound like this would be a new class, not a replacement for the current rules.
Brian Hear is the article Iread in Autoweek: WRC news briefs: World Rally Jr. set for '04; Six factory teams confirmed for '03 WRC A second-level World Rally spec, offering both cost and performance reductions compared to the WRC machines, will be introduced in 2004. The regulations, now under development, are due for World Motor Sport Council approval in April. Series-production 4wd cars with 2.0-liter turbo engines will require a homologation run of 1000 units. Series-production 4wd cars with naturally aspirated engines up to 2.5 liters require 2500 units. Six teams line up The FIA has confirmed six factory teams will contest its 2003 World Rally Championship. They are Marlboro Peugeot Total, Ford Motor Co., 555 Subaru World Rally Team, Hyundai World Rally Team, Skoda Motorsport and Automobiles Citroën. |
