Question "Flappy" hood and wing (per C&D mag)...

Are these really a huge problem? It would seem that having a hood and wing that flex or move around when hit with some wind resistance would be quite annoying.

Can any new owners comment about these -- i.e., differences between driving around town and on the highway, if any. Is it distracting or very obvious?

I'd really hate for these to be a problem on an otherwise good car.

TIA

The wing does flex under high speeds and rough roads but doesnt make any noise. You really have to look for it through the rear view mirror to notice it though.

The scoop also moves and flexs a bit. But both the wing and the scoop don't make any noise. I think the word "flap" is not the right word - perhaps flex is better.

That's what I was hoping... The review used the word "flappy," which kinda scared me. So it sounds as if the bit of "flex" in the scoop and wing aren't really distracting, although they're definitely present... and that it's sort of noticeable at high speed isn't that big of a deal. C&D was the only magazine that commented on this issue... so maybe it's nothing to be very concerned about if so many other people seem to ignore it.

I'm looking to buy a new car next fall -- Evo, STi, R32, or A3 3.2. Not sure if I want a luxo-interior with decent power and an awesome exhaust note, or just a decent interior with butt-loads of power and great handling. What a dilemma I have, ey?

i'll second that, the wing does move around, but only a very small amount. so far it's been barely noticable and i was looking for it. that being said i haven't driven the car anything close to fast yet.

The entire hood shakes at high speed. It is pretty thin and probably has less strength due to the new flat shape than the old hood.

Basically an annoyance, nothing more.

That kinda sucks. You would think that something as simple as that would be held firmly in place by the front latch and the two hinges. Unacceptable for a $30k car, IMHO.

EDIT: Or is it the middle section of the hood that shakes... from the wind resistance created by the scoop? The front and rear of the hood do not move, do they?

If the entire hood shakes, it is minimal, because I really don't notice it and it is not annoying in anyway because I dont feel, hear, or see it shake/vibrate. If you are really on the fence of whether to get an STi or not, I don't think this is a deal breaker at all IMO.

You got to realize two things..
1. It's a super light hood. I mean really light.
2. When the scoop catches air it is bound to make it bounce. same goes for any big bumps. But honestly. It is so barely noticeable, that you have to really pay attention to see it.

Thanks, DVTURK and dlowman. I know that sometimes it's difficult to describe certain things, but both of you gave me a pretty good picture of how it really is. I appreciate that. If it's barely noticeable, then I could tolerate that.

I have a long time to wait (late next year) until I buy, so I'm gathering all the info I can about differences, problems, pros, cons, etc.

THIS IS A NO COMPROMISE RACE CAR

It is light weight and will flex a little. If you wants you can through at sheet metal hood on and cut a hole for the scope. The hood is made of aluminum which is very light and much more flexable than a sheet metal hood.
If you want lighter weight you have to sacrifice something.
Get a carbon fiber one and see how much that one moves around.

1) I understand that now.
2) Why would I add a heavier hood?
3) I'm not interested in paying $600+ for a carbon fiber hood. The weight savings would be negligible for most purposes.

All I was after was an idea of how much the hood & wing move around. Peoples' experiences, that's all. I could do without the sarcasm. Thanks, anyway.

If it's a no compromise race car, then why does it have interior trim? Why is there a back seat? A/C? Where's the roll cage? It's not a race car, but a street car that you can take to the track and be better off than most production cars.

If you didn't mean to come across as sarcastic, then I apologize. However, it certainly seems that way.

This car is so fast you better keep you eyes on the road, and not the scoop or wing.
But the wing shakes a little more than the scoop. But this is really a non-issue. But a car this perfect, you have to have something to complain about.

I put an 02 STi scoop on an 02 WRX hood and the same thing happens. The hood flexes and bobs at freeway speeds. Just what happens when you put a scoop on a <15lbs aluminum hood. I actually didn't really notice it until someone asked me if my hood bounced around.

I wouldn't say that it's a no compromise race car. The EVO seems to be aiming for that a little more, with the occasionally written about stiffer ride and no cruise.

Max, I'm in the same boat as you, but the decision will either be no new car or an STi. It's gonna be fun to read about driver's experiences between now and next fall and see if the STi lives up to its hype or not.

So, everyone that's driving an STi, abuse them for those of us that are waiting, OK?

I picked up my sti today. I had a 55 mile trip back from the dealer on the highway. I watched the wing and hood waiting for this "flapping"or "shaking" motion after reading the various posts about it. Personally I was expecting to see some serious movment. I would say the wing vibrates slightly and the hood doesnt move at all compared to the carbon fiber hood I had on my wrx. IMHO its a non issue. Peace.

I read the article too about the flappy wing & hood scope. They do move but nothing to worry about. Just push down on the gas pedal & you'll forget about everything else

I drove it at about 65. I could see both move, but I was expecting "flapping" and that just did not happen. The moved a little bit. I bet most passengers would never even notice it. You certainly don't "feel" the movement at all.

Also good to know. If you were to actually feel the vibes from the hood or wing somehow, that would be quite distracting.

I appreciate all the responses. If you lived in SE PA, I'd give you all a homebrew.
