I've driven both, and am a huge Z fan from way back.
Basically, the STi is overwhelmingly better than the Z in all areas of handling, feel and fun. The 350Z is sexier. Cheers, Paul Hansen www.apexjapan.com |

I tried the 350Z also when it comes out but not for a long ride (maybe a hour ride and I test drove the STi last week)...
Performance wise, the Z will be no match but in every other aspect, if you don't need 4 doors and AWD, again, the STi is not for you and the 350Z is well worth every penny (comfort, equipment, ride)... As for winter, I live in Quebec (we have about 6 months of snow a year) and my friend told me that it works "fine" in "some" snow with snow tires but if you have a lot of snow, he says it was not as bad as his old Mustang but still not a safe car either with traction control. Check on www.g35driver.com in the Canadian forum, there is a review on the 350Z and G35 in the snow. Personnally, the STi is a awesome car but for people who don't need 4 doors, AWD, 4 seaters, there are a lot of available cars in this price range... SVT Cobra (390hp), G35 2doors (280hp), 350Z 2 doors, 2 seats (287hp)... Sylvain |

I think I'd rather have the sti tha a 350. Maybe that's just because the 350z would be a big step down, but the sti would be something different. I think awd turbo would be an interesting change.

Are you a modder? I am. I love to tinker with a car's performance so much that it would heavily influence my decision on which one to get. There are two ways to tinker, and each favors a different car here.
Drag-strip fast, track-car cornering, lots of money and time modding: If this is the route you want to go, the C5 is your car. The platform ultimately has more performance potential than a worked out economy car. Vettes aren't so cheap to work up though, reasonable, but not cheap. By the time you get deep into the suspension, drag radials, rear gears, a cam, fuel, exhaust, and tuning, you're gonna be pushing some serious dollars. On the bright side, you'll also be pushing the sound barrier. Everyday driver, giant-killer street car with minimal money and modding: If this is what ails ya, the STi is your cure. Talk about an amazing all-weather and all-conditions high-performance car that will take you to work every day with good gas mileage and give the occasional Ferrari a run for it's (substantially more) money. Turbo cars respond well to cheap bolt-ons; $1000 is gonna get you easily over the 300whp mark. You won't add 50whp to the Vette for only $1k. This is more high-performance practicality/transportation car than ultra-high performance 'project' car. So there you go, as a modder, the choice is such: Plan on spending $3000 or less? STi's the way to go. You will make substantial gains on this already amazing car for this much cash, but beyond, you start losing out to the Vette in performance/dollar ratio. Plan on spending $5000 or more? Go Vette. A Vette plus $5k+ will outdo any production car made in every performance catagory. If you're gonna seriously modify, this is the platform to have. After the $3/4k mark you will start exponentially outstripping the capabilities of the STi for the same cash. Not modding? Well, stock for stock its the STi. New (instead of used) for the same price, won't depreciate as quick, better all around car for the street. Just my ideas... |

My 2cents
I see alot of people comparing the STi by feel of WRX. I owned a GC8, WRX and now STi The USDM WRX & USDM STi are differant animals as far as feel. A test drive around the block will not show you this. Pushing the car for a few weeks will. The STi in my opinion is far better than the WRX as a performance car. Yes I know they are basically one in the same but the STi feels very differant when pushed. I hated the way the WRX drove and wished I kept my GC8 with version 5 suspension...The STi has me again pleased |

Have you heard the rumors of a 350 turbo Z? Will it see light of day? I still like the STi for the several of the reasons mentioned here. Another thing I noticed, after being in a WRX, while it did seem a bit smaller inside, the WRX was a good fit. More headroom than M3, and seating position felt more normal (to me) than C5 or 350Z. |

me too
I also thought about a 01 or 02 z06 but decided on the sti which should be here in a week.
here is a site that will allow you to compare the two http://www.car-videos.com/performance/s ... &Speed2=60 i also just pushed a brand new z06 around a short track 4 times with a race insturctor/driver inside with me. After all the laps i told him that it may have just convinced me to get the z06 instead of the STI. He told me to go with the STI and he has tested the STI, EVO, and Z06 all on the track he said the z06 is def better for low end power and higher speeds but said the sti is a good choice (and this was at a chevy event) |

I think car-videos.com are not testing the cars are they? Can't find the thread but it was discussed somewhere back in december-january if I remember.

The 240-280Z era was the best, literally, though it gained more overall acceptance when it became more of a GT car. Unfortunately, Nissan continues to take that fact to heart and continues making it as a GT instead of a sports car. The 350Z is closer to the original Z's than in a while, but still fails to take the extra step necessary to get there - namely a sub-2800lb weight vehicle that communicates the nuances of the surface you are sliding sideways through. Ha, I just read this thread and didn't realize it was old until the end. I like the Z06, but like some other C5 owners have said, you'll be driving the Corvette fast to have fun. The STi is fun at slower speeds. Having experience in both AWD and RWD, I generally agree with the comments on RWD being more fun to drive. In fact, I would likely the first person preaching it. I think the STi has changed my perspective on this somewhat. The STi is certainly much more fun to drive than my Audi, even though the Audi has more horspower and torque. The Audi also weighs more, but I think the differences in fun are more due to the way the two cars distribute power. I'd say that the STi is closer to the M3 in terms of fun to drive, although I still give the nod to the M3 because it has SMG.

C5 was rated the best premium sports car in long term reliability 2 years in a row. J.D. Power and Associates rates them. I think 2000, 2001, I don't think there has been enough time to do a test on the 2002+ cars. That's pretty good. So every car has problems, but on the whole the corvette had the least amount. That's pretty respectable.
The 2001+ cars had a revision done to their traction control systems. The better competition mode works more transparently and is a huge plus on track. |
