STi WHP?
Has anyone dynoed their STi to see how much horsepower it actually puts out to the wheels, not to the crank?

vishnu tuning has posted their baseline numbers for their first STi.
Interestingly, my stage 1 made slightly bigger numbers on Pruvens Dyno (I know, different Dyno, different numbers). not that I think I could hang, but i'd sure like to try. Wait til those 2.5s start getting modded!!! oh yah, a few different people have posted STi dyno numbers godspeed did a while back. |

I read as low as 248 WHP and as high as 263 WHP for a stock STi.

Knowledge performance dyno'ed one last week and confirmed my suspicions that their dyno is very conservative, they only showed 228 WHP.

For comparison, North american version of the M3 is supposed to be 333hp at the crank, most of them test in the 270 RWHP range but vary from the 260s to the 280s.
Is it possible that being AWD, the STi might see a bit more drivetrain loss than a RWD? I think your estimate of 240 - 260 for the STi is close. Guess I should search the archives a little more see if I can find more posts on the topic. |

Its not a just a possibility, its a fact that the awd drivetrain in the wrx/sti has higher loss than rwd drivetrains, i believe the order is:
FWD < RWD < AWD |

Here are some numbers I've seen:
- Dynojet = 255hp / 253 tq - Godspeed Dynopack 5000 = 255hp / 247tq - Unknown source = 250hp / torque not available - TurboXS = 248hp / 267 tq - Vishnu Dynamics Dyno = 223hp / 222tq - FIS (mustang dyno) = 255-260whp / 255tq TurboXS: Godspeed: FI-Systems |

Honestly sometimes I think these dyno numbers threads are started specifically and intentionally to generate confusion by: a) comparing wheel horsepower to crank horsepower b) comparing awd results to 2wd results and....... c) comparing numbers acheived on different dynos. The parent poster makes a big deal out of requesting "wheel" horsepower....then pretends like he doesn't understand the difference between wheel and crank hp. But if he doesn't know the difference.....why specify to begin with? This thread was meant to confuse. |

wheel HP vs. crank HP.
Simple, is not that hard. Drivetrain lost can be anywhere between 10% from a very efficient FWD Honda to 30% from a very inefficient 4WD Jeep. I think one source of confusion is from the manufacturer's claimed crank HP. A lot of the time they are not correct. One example is the latest SRT-4, Dodge claimed it has 215 crank HP, but it shows 220+ WHP on the dyno........... |

No, I DO know what the difference btw wheel hp and crank hp. I just wanted to get the numbers and I'm sure that a lot of others did too. The only reason why I added the comment later was so that others WOULDN'T get confused, but I guess some aren't as intelligent to figure that out.

Dodge never claimed that 215 is crank HP, but they never said it is wheel HP either. I don't know why Dodge claimed such a conservative figure. My guess is to help with insurance cost for the car's targeted budget racer customer. |
