Question How to remove neuetral safey switch / inhibitor switch on 05 Impreza

Hey Everyone,
I have 05 Impreza RS Auto that will not start in park, only in neutral. I assume I have to change the neutral safety switch. I think I located it on the passenger side of the of the transmission right next to a linkage cable.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this job? I assume I have to from above as the exhaust is completely blocking the bottom. I see two very rusted bolts and a retaining pin that will allow me to remove the cable attachment. Anything I should know/that I can break easily? Is this a part that I should get OEM or not needed?

Thanks everyone

Check the brake switch located down on the pedal assembly first. A good, quick and easy check is to press the brakes and see if the lights come on.

If they do not then check that switch.

If they do then continue with your first plan.

Finished this job. Figured I would mention a few things. Remove the intake resonator. There are three bolts one behind the shifter linkage. There is a small positioning bumb on the back of the unit that has to go into its own hole. Move the shifter around to get it to go in but make sure you have the lever arm (the part on the unit that gets moved to detect what position you are in) in place first.

The shifter linkage has a rubber bushing that stayed on the tranny when I pulled it off...I spent way to long trying to get the linkage back on leaving that where it was...you need to pull it off, insert it into the linkage and then slide both on to the tranny again.
