You want this thread:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1130479

It's tailored for the automatic climate control. Don't konw what color you want, but some word of advice:

Blue is impossible to get a non light blue color due to the green diffuser. Painting the radio bulbs blue results in a really dim radio (not sure about red). I did my HVAC with the 3000mcd red led's from radioshack (one for each knob) and the radio with surface mount blue led's. The radio was a pain to do that way, but it matches my blue gauges and is bright.

I almost finished my radio and HVAC last night. I need to redo the radio. After finally getting all the wires routed so that all of the buttons work, I snagged on of them putting the unit back in. The wires are only ~30 gauge (really small) and the solder joints aren't incredibly strong. One wire broke, so the left half of the radio isn't lit up. Also, I forgot to put the track select knob back on, so it looks much brighter than it is with the knob on.

You can kinda get a feel for it from this shaky cell phone pic (I don't own a real camera).

I have an 07 and I've gotten most of the panel off that is around the HVAC knobs, but it still seems to FIRMLY be in place above the radio. There were 2 tabs that were in line with the bottom of the radio. How do I get the rest of the panel unattached?

Similarly, I took off the panels for my steering wheel column to do the light around the ignition. Once I got the panels off, the ignition ring itself wouldn't budge. How do you get this last piece off?

I've read all the threads, links within all the threads, and did as many searches as possible. Everything was beautifully explained but I'm still looking for a little more insight in these two area. Can someone please help with this?

Thanks.

Do you have any pics of it? I'm horrible with words and imagination...the internet can be blamed for that.

OK, I had a problem with the right parts. I got different answers from different people and had to trust someone. I trusted the wrong person and ordered the LED's you see below. I took the green condoms off but am at a fork in the road. I can't decide to use red condoms or use the right red LED's. Can I get some answers as to the proper part numbers and some testimonials???

Okay, I've done this many times for 05+ and did the original writeup for how to mod the 05 HVAC to red lights in the STI.

The directions are different depending on the year of your car. For an 05 STI, you need to add LED's to the HVAC to make it a different color. The parts you need depend on the number of LED's and the brightness. I've had this mod since I got the car 2+ years ago, it still works great.

Use LED's, use the proper resistors and find the writeup if it's an 05 or later.

If it's earlier than an 05, you need bulb condoms. There are only 2 sizes of them for the Subaru, buy both, they're cheap.

It shouldn't be hard, good luck.

I'm considering purchasing the equipment to cast a new radio display lens in red instead of green.

Would anyone else be interested in buying one from me if I get it to come out good? I could probably do other colors as well. The equipment will probably come out to 150 bucks or so, so I figure that if I could get 5 people to buy them from me, it would be worth it. I've got an '06 WRX

i tried just spray painting the bulbs blue in my HVAC and cig lighter, but that did not work at all, so im just going to go ahead and order these http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html
the Single LED Wedge Base Bulbs, and i should get some very nice glow. one may not fit in cig lighter, so ill also order an .12 size bulb condom for the cig lighter, ill post pics when i get the things and do it up

2 (+/-2) size 194 bulbs for the HVAC
As for the stereo/CD changer - I'm not sure... I'd like to do all the lighting with either bulbs or condoms, just to try to keep consistent lighting. Any guesses on the size of the stereo bulbs? I'll try to search some more....
I bought two 194 size LED bulbs for the HVAC off of www.superbrightleds.com and the bulbs do not fit in the holder that twists into the HVAC.

I'm having the hardest time finding the HVAC lights on an 07. I took out my stereo but I can't find any bulbs on the back of my A/C controls. Halp!

Default hvac color change

I just tried today to change my hvac red on my 05 sti its completely different. The bulbs for the hvac are inside the knobs still trying to figure out how to get them apart with out breaking the knobs off. If i find a way i will post it. I did change the color to red in my ashtray and around the cigarette lighter.

This rules, but my HVAC lights are really dim now. I used the same lamp condoms as the key ring, yet the key ring is about twice as bright = /
