Anyone else find it amusing that Subaru's Drive magazine had a 1/4 page article about this?

Have a Nice Day? What if it isn't the switch

Hi all.

I have a 97 impreza that is doing this but it isn't the switch. =/ The lights that come on are the back running lights, the back marker light (x2) and the dash lights. I took the plastic off the steering column but it looks a little involved to get the switch out so I was curious if I was at least headed in the right direction.

TIA!

Default More Info

Sorry I forgot to add this.

I think I should note my door locks have been screwy the past couple of days. Locking often as if they have a mind of their own. It has been a problem for about 6 months but over the last week it has gotten more severe.

I just resolved this. It ended up being a bad aftermarket remote car starter. Once I unpluged it everything just went away.

I had read from somewhere that the reason that is there is cause in europe (more specifically the UK) that you have to have the parking lights on when you leave the car because street lights are few and far between in certain parts of the cities and countrysides. No matter what... or else your given a ticket. Most people had to leave their lights on the secondary setting (including the front corners) on all the time. So Subaru just put the switch there to make it easier for people and not to drain the power as fast...

Again... read this somewhere YEARS ago... so I may not remember exactly...

This got me today after owning my subaru for over a year. We were on our way to an amusement park, and I got pulled over by a state trooper for speeding. I was fumbling around for license, registration, etc.... and I figured I'd put my hazard lights on. Well, in my confusion and terror at thinking about a speeding ticket, guess what button I pushed. I got off with a written warning, but my battery was dead when we left the park. I got a jump, and came home and googled it. Thank God for the internet! We had unhooked the battery, and I thought I'd have to call the garage. (Boy, I really would have felt stupid then!)

Does this go without saying for all vehicles? My friend has a 2005-2006 impala and he cannot leave his car running without the parking lights coming on which is really agitating.

I've owned my 02 WRX for over 6 years and have never used that switch. Somehow today i obviously must have hit it on my commute home. I couldn't figure out why the parking lights were on, so I pulled the fuse so the battery wouldn't die while I consulted this forum. I'm glad i read the stickies, before posting to the experts/flame throwers:-) Thanks NASIOC!

funny thread, that stupid switch is gone for '08 (finally), and the lights will turn on and off automatically when left in the on position when the key is put in and taken out of the ignition.

I got my car back from the car wash and noticed my parking lights wouldn't turn off. I scratched my head for while before I sat in the car pretending to dust everything, and I finally saw the darn switch

This just doesnt' make sense to me, since there is the option to turn on the parking lights with the turn signal stalk too..

Every other car I've driven you could just leave the parking lights on with the 'regular' light switch and it would buzz at you if you opened the door while they are still on....

So I called my kid to get the answer to a simple question (I thought it was a blown fuse) and instead I get "Read Unabomber's FAQ for newbies!" Guess I told him to look something up himself one too many times. The thread wasn't penned by Unabomber, but I guess my little boy is all grown up now! ***sniff, sniff***

What's really sad is we've been driving Subarus for 6 years and I knew nothing about it.

So in my 4 years of owning my Subaru I finally fell for this. I've experienced this in the past, but it's been so long I forgot. So I pull up to park at this restaurant, earlier that night I was messing with fog lights so I figured I screwed something up. For the life of me the parking lights would not turn off. I finally end up taking out the fuse for the parking lights.

So I put in and take the fuse out 4 or 5 more times that night. Finally I get home and Google this. Throw back on some pants, run downstairs to find out the damn switch was on. I had to laugh at it all, I seriously felt like a dumb ass

My wife found our first Sube last week, broken piston, major dents, over all clean, 97 Outback Impreza. After a week of hard work, my wife wet vaced, wash out, and ozonated everything on the inside. We went on our first short trip today to chuck e cheeses for a children's b/day party, and upon arriving home and disembarking, LO! those pesky parking lights... So being a scooby newbie, I pulled the fuse and checked in here.... Ha! what fun poking fun at my wife... she turned on every possible switch with the vac...

the night i bought my subby, i was asking the salesmann like a million questions like
"whats this do, and what for???"

well when i asked about the parking lights... he told me if the car is parked in a dark parking lot you put the parking lights on so it can be seen and so that you dont walk up to a dark car in a dark parking lot...he tells me "you can leave these lights on for 4 days with out it draining the battery cause it uses 1/4 of the power frome the battery
ok cool
that night i leave them on cause it looked cool lol
next morning...yup dead battery... i was soo pissed
i was happy i didnt preset any of the radio stations yet lol

When I first got my '97 Legacy wagon it had lived under an oak tree in VA for two years. I spent a month detailing it, and one day I made the fateful mistake of going over the dash really good. It took about an hour and two beers and a lot of experimenting to figure out that the switch wasn't for the hazard lights. This was my first car of over fifteen that wasn't American and manufactured in the eighties(I've saved a fortune on repair costs).

Doesn't the switch on the signal stalk light up the running lights for those fools that think it's cool to use their running lights instead of headlights at dusk. I thought that the park light switch lights up the markers and the signal stalk switch lights up the running lights(the red lights in the rear being the only difference), maybe I'm mistaken.

My LR marker light went out sometime recently. The first light out in eleven years!

Car wash procedure - roll up windows - get car washed - pay for car wash - get keys from attendant - get in car - turn off parking light switch that's ALWAYS turned on by anyone wiping the top of the steering column - drive away. This thread is pretty funny as my wife gets nailed by this every time.
