Default 04 wrx AC climate control partially working.

I recently swapped the stereo on the car and noticed that the climate control wasn’t working properly. First, when I turn on the dash lights, the climate controls is the only thing not lit up. I didn’t notice this since I don’t really drive at night. Second, AC, rear defroster buttons and defroster don’t work. Everything else works but that. Temperature, speed of fans and even where it comes out. It doesn’t engage the ac compressor at all. I did check all the fuses as well and AC relay and seem to be good. But it’s hard to say if my ac compressor went bad if the button doesn’t even turn on. Faulty climate control unit? Any ideas? Could this be a sign to get an sti? All jokes aside, should I try a new unit and see if that helps? Thanks!

A number of folks have had problems with the contacts of the connector going to the control unit. Check for burned contacts in the connector. Here is a link with pictures of such an issue:
