Default subaru extra mt 75W80

after doing some research, this is the fluid that comes in all 2014+ manual transmission subarus. ive ran all the popular gear lubes in previous subaru's, and none worked as well as this stuff. it looks like its currently only sold in 5 gallon buckets for $400 or so. are any shops selling it by the quart or gallon? none of the local dealers here do.

you are overthinking this. you could put ANY 75w90 oil in your tranny and rear diff. you cant find this 75w80 because no one uses it. you dont need oem tranny oil.

ive used enough aftermarket gear lubes to know better than to try them again. not a single one shifts as good as this stuff.

Did you ever find an answer to this? I did a trans fluid change on my 16 wrx a few weeks ago (30k miles) and got the subaru stuff from the dealer. I experienced lousy 1-2 and 3-2 shifting/grinding which just sucks. Had enough so I swapped it for Redline this past weekend - much better but not as good as the original fill. Wish I didn't change fluid at this point.

id suggest emailing or calling soa and complaining that you cant get the oem fluid because they sell it in an impractical size. if enough people complain, maybe they will sell it in quarts. other than that, i have no solution unless i can get 4 people to commit to buying a gallon if i buy a pail and split it up or if a vendor would do the same.

I think this is a good synthetic to try: https://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=47&pcid=7

Otherwise I think any API GL-5 rated 75w-90 you can pick up at the local auto parts store should work fine.

Ive been down this road before, no 75w90 will shift as good. Ive tried that redline ns and it sucks.

While I do agree about the redline ns, it has significantly improved the more miles I put on it. The factory fill was still way smoother.

How about AMSoil Severe Gear 75w-90? Looks like it can last the life of the vehicle with its 100k mile change interval.

I've got 10K on Mobil Delvac 75w-90 and I've been very happy with it thus far. It was an improvement over the stock oil that came in my 2013.

Not all Subarus with manual transmissions are factory filled with 75W80 gear oil.

The current STI manual transmission is factory filled with 75W90 gear oil. The current WRX is factory filled with 75W80 gear oil.

Spoke with my local Subaru dealer's part manager (Don Miller - East Madison, WI) and explained my trans fluid dilemma. The response I got from him was that he could either sell me the 5 gallon bucket or sell me what I need and he would put the remaining in their inventory. Said it would take about a week to get. This tells me that if I brought my WRX in for the trans fluid change, I wouldnt have gotten Extra-MT. On the other hand its cool that he's willing to sell me the quantity I need. I'll report back once it comes in and go get some (I want to see it poured out of the labelled bucket).

Yup. You must use the stock oil, that they don't carry by the QT for some reason, or you will ruin the shifting and get gear rattle. I went thru the same bull**** with the BRZ. Do NOT drain your gear oils unless you're prepared to order the 5 gallon pails from Japan.

I have a 2014 WRX and changed my transmission oil at 15000 miles with Amsoil 75W90 LL and thought it actually shifted smoother with the Amsoil than with the factory fill. It's been in therefor 5000 miles and it's doing very well.

Default 75w90

I used 75w80 extra (non syn) in my 04 wrx 5MT and my 90 Rx7 trans. "Fixed" them! Like totally 100% perfect shifting...

just got 06 STi. Shifts hard. FSM says 75w90 GL5 syn.. I used the Subaru stuff by Idemetsu... didn't do crap. I'm going back to the dealer for the 5 gal pail of 75w80 extra (non syn). Last time it was $160 but that was 5 years ago

I may try Motul Motylgear 75w-80 (API GL-4/GL-5) in a 2015 WRX.

https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/products/motylgear-75w80

For my 2016 WRX STI I use Motul Gear300 75w-90 (API GL-4/GL-5) in the transmission and Motul PA90 (API GL-4/GL-5) 90w in the rear differential. For the rear differential, the Subaru manual recommends 75w-90, but 90w can be used; it depends on the temperature range and other factors.

This is only STI advice here, but to clear up some misinformation (or at least confusing information) in the thread, you should use 75w90 (no friction modifier) in the STI 6MT and 90wt in the STI R180 barring years where the rear diff. was not a clutch-type diff. (in which case, 75w90 works better in the rear pumpkin). Motul is a good brand and frankly, there is no reason to use another brand unless Motul is hard to obtain in your area.

WRX stuff is a little more situational - have at it.

Mogul gear 300 in my stock 2006 WRX. Works great for me, maybe not for you.
I run a fill for around 80k and dump and re-fill.done it 3-4 times
My car has 286k, shifts smoothly, on the original clutch.

I tried the motylgear 75w80 a week after changing the factory fill oil with the motul gear 300 oil. The car is a 2014 6mt outback. According to the manual, the factory fill was the extra mt oil. Shifting with the gear 300 oil wasn't smooth at all. That’s why I decided to try the motylgear 75w80. Shifting is now very similar to what it was with the factory fill. It’s considerably smoother than it was with the gear 300. It also smooth while cold; morning are still at 0C - 5C in april here in Quebec City.

I switched to the Motul 75w-90 and had increased difficulty shifting which became noticeable in temps below maybe 65F. I'm now running a 50-50 mix of the Motul 75w-80 (semi synthetic) and 75w-90 (gear 300 full synthetic) and really like it so far. According to the website, both are rated for yellow metal compatibility and are GL-5 rated.

My 2003 wrx gets a 4th gear grind with the subaru high performance 75w-90. I have been using stp 75w90 and have no grind. Maybe i should try a mix? This is the 3rd trans i have had it the car

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I have a couple of gallons of Subaru Extra S gear oil leftover from my Subie days. Free to local SoCal peeps. First come first served!
PM me.

Default subaru extra mt alternative

Just to shed some light on Subaru Extra MT 75W-80 oil that they factory fill on multiple manual transmission cars. Subaru only sells it in 5-Gallon pail under part number SOA748V0100 that is not viable for lot of DIYers to buy unless a group wants to split up 4 quarts each :-)

I had done research sometime back and after calling various techs, I found out that Mitasu Japan makes that oil and it is called MJ-441. Below is the link and you will see it is good not only for Subaru SOA748V0100 but several other manufacturer standards.

https://www.mitasuoil.com/en/mj-441

You can't get it in USA so closest match is Motul Motylgear 75W80 if you compare MSDS from Motul and Mitasu MJ-441. Both MJ-441 and Motylgear are synthetic blends and GL-4/5 certified.

I have used in my two Subaru WRX (2015+) without an issue and for first ~200 miles with Motul I saw transmission was bit notchy but after that period shifting is just like stock fluid.
