Default Wrx stalling/dying while driving

I have a 2002 wrx with a 2008 sti motor in it and recently while I have been driving it has been dying on me. It first started happening when I would get into my boost a little bit around 4500 rpms and would slow down rapidly to go into a turn. When I put the clutch in, the rpms would drop to around 300 and then go to 0. All of the lights on the dash come on and I don't have power steering anymore. More recently, it has been dying on me more often, almost every time I drive it. When I put the car in neutral or put the clutch into downshift the rpms drop to below 500 and then sometimes go back up to around 1000 but other times the car will just completely die. I am not sure why this is happening and if anyone has any clues that would be very appreciated.
I also have my datalogs from my accesport when the car stalled on me but I'm not sure how to read any of the numbers so if anyone can take a look at it and see something that pops out, it would help so much! Thank you!

If this is happening every time you disengage the clutch or put the car in neutral, then you are taking your foot off the gas pedal, right?

Sounds like fuel flow issue.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

The car doesn't stall every time I push in the clutch or put it into neutral, but the rpms drop every single time. I have only had the car for about 5 months so I have not checked nor changed the fuel filter.

OK,, so . . .

- 2002 WRX
- 2008 STi motor
- New Owner 5 months ago

First thing you should do is perform ALL regular maintenance on both the car and the motor.
- Air filters, fuel filters, fluids, coolant, hoses, belts, etc.
- How many miles on the motor?
- Has the timing belt been changed?

Too many unknowns at this point.

Once you have done that, then let us know.

Okay I will most likely go pick up a new fuel filter sometime today and see if that was the problem.

But, to answer your questions.
- 82k miles on the motor
- Timing belt was just changed not even 1000 miles ago

Update: I changed the fuel filter and died on me 3 times after taking it out again.
The fuel filter was not the issue. If you have any other ideas that would be great.
Another note, when I put in the clutch to make a turn or drop it to another gear, the rpms would stay very low at around 100 rpms and would not come back up until I pressed the gas.

Are you getting any CELs? If so, what are the codes?

How does the car idle when cold or hot?

In your earlier post, you mentioned how the RPMs would fluctuate when going into neutral or pushing the clutch in ( disengaging clutch ).

Could be a vacuum leak. Have you checked all your vacuum hoses for leaks?

What injectors and fuel pump are you running?
How about your fuel supply? Where do you buy your gas?
- Do you just buy the cheapest price you can find or are you using a reputable supplier, ie; Shell, Mobil, etc.?

I am getting misfiring codes for all 4 cylinders and a front 02 sensor short, but I haven't noticed any power loss or any noise and my mechanic believes that it is throwing my accesport these codes because it has the old 2002 wrx ecu instead of the new 2008 sti one.

When cold the car has begun to idle high around 1500 rpms and then when it gets hot it idles around 1000.

I am fairly new to the car scene and I have no clue which lines are vaccum lines and which are for something else. What should I be looking for?

I am on the stock injectors and it has a 400Lph fuel pump.

I usually buy my gas from Costco or Sams. I don't think they would have bad gas there but I could be wrong.

Well, there is part of your problem right there.
The 2008 STi has DUAL AVCS
The 2002 WRX has NO AVCS

Your ECU is probably trying to run AVCS but it has zero inputs for it.

A 1000 RPM is fine and is what you want. Better for oil pressure in the heads.
If you are using the old 2002 O2 sensor, get a new one.

Check all your hoses under the hood for cracks, leaks, loose fittings.
Change / fix as necessary

I personally would NOT choose any discount / big chain stores as my source for fuel. I stick with brand name oil companies like Shell / Mobil. At least I have a better possibility of getting what I am paying for.

I personally don't think it is an ecu issue as I drove it for a good 3 months before it started to die on me.

I'll take a look at the vacuum lines to see if there is an issue there.

I have an appointment set up with a Subaru only Mechanic shop near me that is very reputable soon so I'll know what is going on with it then, but I was just gonna see if maybe anyone had any quick fixes/ideas that would fix it!

Thank you so much! I appreciate it and I'll reply back when I learn what is is!

I'm just a little curious... could you not hear this "massive" exhaust leak prior to taking the car to a mechanic?

I currently have an exhaust leak on my GF8 as well. It's somewhere under the middle of the car. I wouldn't say the leak is 'massive"... but with the quiet factory exhaust/muffler, it's very noticeable, and sounds rather crappy.

The real question is how could both the OP and his so-called mechanic not hear a massive exhaust leak?

Maybe the OP has one of those massively annoying exhausts?
