wife just hit the purchase button for my 3800x, gigabyte x570 gaming x, 32GB of corsair 3000MHz CL15, and a corsair 200R case, for about $700

gonna reuse my R290, 1TB MX500, and EVGA 750W

replacing my 2700k that i've been using since 2011 (that i'm not sure that i really needed to get rid of yet, but some apps will stop supporting it next year)

I just replaced a 2600K w/560ti a couple months ago. I couldn't play the latest flight sims, so it made a huge difference.

Meh, stellaris is my go to timewaster right now. I might buy something new for cyberpunk, or I might not. Got a 2yr old and a 4yr old, so not much of a gamer right now.

Woah. I made so many transcon flights fly by playing Stellaris. I can barely get to late game without some damn war in heaven or extradimensional invasion ****ing up my federation.

Ha, ended up cancelling my order yesterday. I think I'm putting everything off till the day my wife goes back to work (in probably 2 more years)

Yeah, I gotta check my steam hours for stellaris, but I'm sure a lot of them were spent with my eyes shut.

Probably not a bad idea since the 2700k will be fine with the 290. Not a huge benefit unless you upgrade your GPU in the near future too.

Anyone want a GTX 1070 for whatever it's worth these days?

I think it's an EVGA 1070 FTW but will need to check.

I'm about to upgrade I think and a few $ would help.

PM me if interested.

One suggestion, before you pull that system apart, see if there's a new bios for that R9 290. Or make sure the one you have is UEFI compatible. To get some of the fast boot functionality features, you need everything to be UEFI compatible. I had issues with my old MSI R290 Lightning in a build I did for a neighbor (game him some old parts) with a R5 2600 in a Gigabyte X570 board, where I was having all sorts of boot issues. Threw in a new UEFI GPU, and every issue went away, and I was able to disable CSM compatibility too.

Is that just for the post or does it still load with windows? Uefi is more important for secure booting (prevents malware from loading before the kernel).

Most consumer motherboards seem to suck in this regard.

Got a Logitech G Pro wireless mouse for Christmas. Pretty sweet, I like it more than the G903 I used for a little while.

I really like the look of the G915, need to find it local (microcenter?) so I can try out the keys. That price though, oof.

Cool, congrats! Looks like Itx?

What's that cage covering the cooler side of your gpu for? Don't think I've seen that in those cases yet. Wonder if it would run cooler without.

Yeah.. was trying to go for smallest itx possible. Reading the case manual, besides being a spot for fancy logo seems to be a bit of a channel to direct air through some of the wall passthough channels. Can also support a couple of extra accessories, like 2.5 or 3.5" drive or pump brackets.

I keep forgetting case makers have gotten good enough to make them so multipurpose, they can be hard to recognize.

My issues were problems getting it to actually boot correctly. I had lockups in POST and all kinds of issues if I did manage to get into Windows. I actually thought it was AMD firmware issues, but even after I had a stable BIOS update installed, the issues continued. But swapping out the GPU fixed everything.

There was a "UEFI" compliant VGA BIOS for my video card, but it was beta and not fully compliant, so forum posts showed mixed results. My issue was I tried to even do a non-UEFI install as far as disabling CSM and all that, and I still couldn't get it to boot.

The "fast boot" stuff is related to post and is just a bonus (but nice to have...something I notice a lot of people building new systems with all UEFI compatible equipment, yet they leave CSM compatibility on).

You may not have any problems, but I'd still check just to be sure. Many mfg's did release updated BIOS's for that generation of GPU's and you may as well take advantage of it if it's out there.

New comp is up and running on Win 10. Ended up paying for a new license, which I think is the first time I've ever actually paid for Windows, and I can deal with $150.00 every 35 years, lol.

The old key I had was from a free download I had from a school I attended 10 years ago, it was some weird enterprise key linked to an email I don't have, so decided not to bother with it. (Was also a Win 7 key, never upgraded to Win 10)

Weird, did you try the win7 and it didn't work? I've had some funky old win7 keys work, even pre-release and 180day trials, hah.

Yeah even called windows tech support, figured it was worth a shot if it would save me $150.00, while the key was valid and actually valid for multiple computers, it was some multi unit enterprise key that they could only make work on Win 7 (allegedly) if I had the correct ISO which I could only download if I either log into the enterprise site (a school I went to a decade ago), or could verify the e-mail associated with it (a Norwegian .edu e-mail that no longer exist).

i could theoretically boot up the old PC, create a bootable USB from windows, install win 7, then try to upgrade and hope the free upgrade still works, but that too much damn work.

Tried the free Borderlands 3 dl, ran at around 60-70 fps @1440p on ultra, which seems to be around where is expected. Going to mess around with the settings based on some reading online though.

Also haven't updated bios or any of the drivers, which I'm sure will help!

Good stuff. Glad your system is up and running well.

I've had pretty good frame rates with the 1080 GTX. I'm still not sure where to enable the G-Sync overclock for the monitor with the new control-panel-less Nvidia drivers, so i'm making do with 144hz

My big proof of the increased performance is that running the PLEX server off this machine results in flawless streaming of Star Wars 4K77. Wow does it look good in real 4K.

added 4 140mm Corsair RGB fans and 1 120mm fan. Got them all connected with a Corsair hub ($10 from their website) and hooked up the Wraith Prism CPU fan to the motherboard's RGB control. Now my system looks like everyone else's on r/pcmasterrace
