Post Registering your car in VA

Have any of you moved from out of state and had to register your car here. I am guess I need to get it inspected and get an emissions test done, right? Do I have to pay the taxes again, since I already payed them in MD about a year and half ago.

You have to get a yearly inspection in VA for your sticker. I am sure you will have to pay taxes in VA regardless of whether you paid MD ones. You may be able to get some money back from MD.
I moved to VA about 3 years ago from MD. I made the mistake of thinking my speeding tickets wouldn't follow me. You should have seen my face when my friend told me they did.

hehe.

I haven't helped you one bit have I?

Step 1, go to the DMV.

Step 2, see step 1.

OK, what about registering in MD (just moved from PA)?

Do you have to pay property tax every year on it (didn't have to in PA)?

Check the DMV website.

Quote:
If your vehicle is to be garaged in the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, or Stafford, or the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas or Manassas Park, your vehicle must meet the emissions inspection requirement before you register your vehicle with DMV. For additional information on the emission inspection program or to find the nearest inspection station to you, contact the Department of Environment Quality at (703) 583-3900 or toll free in Virginia at 1-800-275-3844.

Obtain a Virginia vehicle safety inspection sticker prior to registering your vehicle. For additional information on safety inspections or to find the nearest safety inspection station to you contact State Police
When you go down to the DMV to register, if you have proof that you paid sales tax on the vehicle already (in MD) you will be exempted from the sales tax in VA. Bring it with you or you have to pay, and you can't get it refunded after you pay. Your original bill of sale would have that on it.

The Apexi banner is going to have to go - VA only allows inspection and tax stickers on the windshield.

If you live in Fairfax county, the station at Fair Oaks Mall is very convenient and the line moves fast.

MD rules! I'm living in VA with MD plates 'cus you don't have to pay taxes on it, plus inspection is every few years.

PS - while you can exempt sales tax, you don't exempt the dreaded car tax. You will get a bill in October for a prorated amount of the cartax - if you register now, it'll be for about half of the full tax - probably close to $200.

Hehe...though VA isn't always the most up-to-date state when it comes to billing for car tax. My 2000 RS never ever got a bill. So I didn't pay. =)and now I'm in California, and you can guess where I'll tell 'em to go. =)
