Positive.
I shot this with a 35mm lens - i.e.: It was six inches from my face. Yes, it is eating a bee.

Those are totally harmless. We get them here in Texas and I've had plenty slip down the back of my shirt when I unintentionally walked through their web.

That is a completely harmless garden spider (aka orb weaver, edit: or as mentioned above, "writing" spider). They make nifty zig zag webs. They are good to have around because of the volume of insects they can consume. Don't kill it! Weavers don't usually bother anything or enter your house.

I'm sure he was just inspecting the product to make sure it was indeed low sodium.

Can anyone identify the spider in my photo? I've been wondering what it was.

It's kind of hard to tell from the angle and the bee that's blocking a lot of it. Crab spider?

Do you have a picture of the top of it? From that angle, it looks like another type of your standard garden orb weaver, we've got them all over up here. I walk into three or four of their webs on a weekly basis.

I slept on the couch a couple months back after finding one crawling across the floor one night, clearly looking for an escape route. I picked dudette up and was in the process of trying to find her a cool place outside for her to build her web, when the GF came up and tried to hit her with a shoe. While she was in my hand. Needless to say, dudette survived and I believe she popped out some kids, because there's a super small one with a perfect web in the exact same place now. Anyway, here's an underside shot of a garden orb weaver, looks very similar. |

Predwolf is the spider whisperer?
Elaborate on the kinds of things wolf spiders kill that are dangerous? I kill any spider I see because I ****ing hate spiders. Often the ones that meet my shoe are wolf spiders. |

Thing is, as I grew up and realized how nature works, I realized I was doing more harm than good (in 99% of the cases of spider burning/stomping). I began to google spiders native to my location just to know what was what, and educated myself on a lot of the most basic species. Like wolf spiders for example, their venom is basically harmless to humans and pets. You might feel a bit ill after if you're sensitive, but that's about it when it comes to their bites. They're ground creatures, and while they can climb, they really tend to stick to the floor or very close to it. They will build a small little 'home' out of web, usually in your basement corners where they sit all day. Then at night, they come out and hunt down all the little insects/ants/other spiders in your house. They're natural hunters, they prefer to chase down their prey (they're super fast) than sit and wait for it in a web. Wolf spiders get pretty big, and they're bullies in the spider world. They will chase out other, more dangerous, species or outright kill them if they find them. Brown Recluse/Hobo/Widows, wolf spiders will feast on them happily. Thing is, wolf spiders also stick together after birth, and you'll see the mother (who can grow to be the size of your palm in leg span) carrying her young on her back as she looks for a suitable place to live. Shocking, yes, but I'd much rather have 100 wolf spiders in my basement eating up all the termites/ants/bad spiders than a single recluse hiding in my toolbox. |
