Setting aside all of the other ridiculous markup/expenses on boat maintenance, you will also be shocked at how much fuel a boat burns doing 40 mph if you have never been made aware. Hauling kids around on a tube burns even more.

You're on a forum for car enthusiasts who drop thousands of dollars (never to recoup) on modding an econobox. Your logic doesn't belong here.

yes, but most people daily drive cars, not boats.

car = tool, boat = hobbie

for the record, we've had 3 planes and two boats... NEVER AGAIN.

24 mentioned it before, yes boats are expensive to own/maintain but the sanity recovery of being able to take out some freinds on teh lake during weekends/after the work day is priceless.

I've got a 22ft Sea Ray - big enough to entertain friends on, easy to tow and launch with an F150, and has conveniences like a bathroom, sink, shower, plenty of storage to keep clutter off the floor and not too pricey to run.

A tank of gas lasts between 4-6 trips out (depending on whether we're cruising, drifting or towing tubes etc on the lake). That's about CAD$30 to $50 for a day out. Of course if I run around at 50 mph everywhere it'll get pricey.

It's pre-season service cost a couple of hundred dollars, and winterizing it will be about the same. If you've space to store a boat at home, then they're not ruinously expensive to run. Mine's 5 years old, only has 60 hrs on the engine and had lost 50% of it's value from new (it cost me $28k), so subsequent depreciation should be much slower.

Know the feeling well. It is especially hard when I start seeing things like this

http://auto-rv.com/Browse.aspx?AdName=CMI5185019

$15,000 seems like a steal to get in the 30ft (and mid 90's) range. Make me want to at least go look at it but I know I can't really afford it anyway. Saw a mid 90's 23ft Rinker with the 454 get sold on Craigslist last week for $6700. Seems like there are all sorts of deals but our state has also been hit terribly by the downward turn in the economy so it makes sense.

Remember, larger boats are better because you can take out more people. But, it'll suck when you're by yourself, as you'll be paying 100% of the fuel expense. When the fuel crunch hit us two years ago, I didn't even sweat it because I have an efficient power cat. Many of the guys with 23, 30, etc foot boats couldn't afford to use them more than once/month.

I used to work at a marine electronics company and used to be amused at the guys trying to nurse along their 20-year-old fish finder or radar unit because they didn't want to drop money on getting a new one.

Ugh, now you have me considering 2001 hulls...but weary of the wooden stringers. But for a sub $8k boat that will do everything my heart desires (tow, haul 4-5 people, go fast) its soo tempting. My garage is climate controlled and would prob fit the boat....tow it to the boat launch in teh sti

WRX300 you have a CC? If so what kind? Its really a hard boat to beat (for my age): well designed hull, american muscle v8 (that shuold be easy to work on/maintain), cheap to buy, cheap to run. Yea i keep on convincing myself

Instead of a boat, why not buy an SCCA ITA/ITB car and a nice trailer and go racing.

Note.....I lost only $1500 on my 18' enclosed aluminum trailer when I sold it. Besides tires, I pretty much broke even on my 87 CRX ITA car. No insurance or other costs that the boat had associated with it. I probably spent $2k on tires.....I tended to do the winter Hoosier specials. I had the car/trailer approximately the same period as the boat. Actually a few years longer.

Yea im currently on the fence on this. I use my STI as a DD and auto-x car. I could sell it, buy a 2002 jeep grand cherokee + boat. When i wanted to get back into auto-x, get a miata or crx and build it from the ground up.

For me, boats = cute young girls in bikinis, water/watersports, sun, beer, bbq's, sunsets, late nights under the stars.

Auto-x = doods, getting dirty, driving the **** outta a car, winning bragging rights.

I translate this into: "I think I'm interested in the concept of owning a boat."

Before you dump money into a new hobby that you may end up hating or may end up costing you way more than you are prepared to spend or costing you your marriage, get experience on other peoples' boats (plural) and talk to them about why such-and-such a boat is better than various other brands, models, sizes, etc.

Step 1: Go out on a friend's boat several times in different weather. A few over-nighters would be a good idea.

Step b: Rent/charter a boat for a couple of days. See if you can get through the charter with your damage deposit intact.

IV: Work up a budget comparing cost of ownership (depreciation, storage, maintenance, etc.) with renting, say, twice a year.

a 1979 CC Ski Tique and a 1985 CC Ski Tique both with 302's. we're on a small lake - even Nautiques are pressing it size-wise but yeah; oil change, new points/distributor when they rust out, good bilge pump and lots of gas are pretty much all you need for them.

the older ones are lacking on people space - the tiques only have a single rear facing spotter seat versus the double bench on the Nautique so thats why I was linking to open-bow/newer ones that actually have more room

but with the holley 650 and MSD ignition on them they'll do 45-50 no problem. I love the way the v8 burbles and when the secondaries come on its ****ing symphonic

Because it sucks being on land with everyone else when you could be out on your own boat, and get the hell away from people?

I've owned a dedicated autox car, and a boat at the same time. The autox car got sold.

I can understand all the hate towards I/O's but honestly I really like mine. It's been in the family since new (its an '86) and is pretty reliable. It's been used in the salt since day 1, sure I've had to replace things but if you take care of your boat and do some preventative maintenance it won't rape you financially. I guess what I am trying to say is that if you like to tinker, don't rule out an I/O.

Boats.... Expensive. The family armada:

1. 2 x mid-70's 12 ft aluminum, 9.9 HP outboard. One Johnson (awesome little motor), one Evinrude (POS).

2. 14 ft aluminum, newer 9.9 Johnson. Good boat.

3. 16 ft pontoon boat with 30 HP Johnson. Been a lemon since day one. Strands us by not starting...

4. Mid-80's 16-ish ft Thundercraft bowrider with 3.0L I/O OMC. Needs a good restoration job, but has served well most of the time. Averages one decent thing broken per summer. (starter, top, ignition...)

New aquisitions:

5. 17-ish ft Lund fishing boat with 60 HP Johnson. 2006-ish. Haven't tried this one yet, really looking forward to it.

6. The monster. Baja Islander, big block V8 (425 HP). Wicked boat, hits 75 MPH with 5 people in it. Too big and heavy for skiing, but deadly for tubing and wakeboarding. Reliable, but expensive by it's nature. Loves gas with a passion.

The biggest issue we have is fuel. If I'm running the two bowriders together for a good weekend of fun I can push a $500 gas bill. The T-Craft costs about $90 to fill and the Baja closer to $200, and it doesn't take much to burn through a tank in a day.

I have a lot of the day to day costs easy though, the boats live at our cottages. My extended family owns 3 places on a lake, so we have plenty of parking available.

Last year I just sold my 1987 Proline Walk-around cuddy 21-ft boat with same year 225HP Evinrude 2-stroke outboard.

It was my first boat, so I'll give you what I've learned.

First of all....that isn't a good "starter" boat. You want something that is used and between 15-ft to 19ft long. It will get effed up almost immediately so don't get something expensive.

Yes....they really *are* that friggin unreliable! First of all....get a 4-stroke engine....preferably an outboard made by Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki. Mercury makes race engines....and they last accordinly.

Unless you plan on doing a lot of camping on the boat, or banging random chick on the boat, your cuddy cabin will only ever be used as a storage room for other crap you keep on the boat because its too much trouble to haul it back and forth between house and boat all the time.

Get an aluminum trailer....don't bother with a galvanized one.

Every hour of boat operation requires two hours of maintenance.

On average, every third time out something stops working.

Always have two batteries with you....and carry a set of jumper cables.

Even though you only use the boat 2 months a year, go out and crank it up every two weeks or more often....rain or shine.

If you live south of the Mason-Dixon, wax it every month and keep it covered at all times.

Do not buy a boat that has teak anything. It looks awesome when you first refinish it....and need a complete refinish every month afterwards.

Buy a boat with foam flotation.
