Do code monkeys count as "IT professionals?"

If so, follow my patented plan: Join huge company. Move around. Do everything from development to documentation to quality / test.

r0bman keeps things fresh.

Pretty much.

For me comes from dealing with stupid users (see the various threads here) and/or the possibility that our jobs could be outsourced at the drop of a hat.

But mainly dealing with stupid people.

I'm getting jaded about the poor quality of software, compatibility and documentation out there. I deal primarily with Microsoft and recently implemented Exchange 2007 on Server 2008. Holy **** what an ordeal. From the changes in IIS to the required certificates and necessary command lines in the Exchange shell, most of which was poorly documented or if it was, each little piece was scattered in places like blogs or Exchange tutorials.

It's getting to the point where it seems software simply doesn't work unless you wrestle it and waste time forcing it to work with shoddy workarounds or band-aids. Software that is RTM is so poor these days that it is getting really ****ing old.

It's really a crappy job.

You can be one of the guys who keeps things working, like a server admin, or a helpdesk guy, or a NOCling. You may get long periods of time when you are just relaxing, surfing the web, shooting nerf guns at your coworkers or whatever. You may like this, or it may drive you crazy. You probably have to talk to angry stupid customers on the phone. Nobody likes that. If you stick with the job and don't wind up in jail for murder, you may get a promotion - to a position with less customer contact, and more getting paged at 3am because something broke and you're the guy who fixes it. FOR WEEKS AT A TIME.

OR - you can avoid "operations" type work, and get into an engineering / design / architecture type roll. Become the guy who plans the network! Evaluates new gear and new technologies! Researches security issues. Sounds awesome, right? WRONG. You will spend at least 80% of your time either writing tedious documents or in meetings. You will barely ever do anything hands-on technical. You will also probably have to wear a shirt with a collar and possibly a tie. This is all fine for some people but most people who get into the idea of IT work never wanted to get involved with sales or management or otherwise people-oriented stuff.

Solution: Become a contractor.

You are paid WAY more than employees, you are paid for ALL your hours, and for some reason clients ... gasp ... believe what you tell them.

10 years later and it's still fresh. My current client flew me to Ft. Lauderdale and put me up in the Embassy Suites for a week, all expenses paid.
