Nice planning and work. Are you using those for an Atmos setup?

So far so good, but I've only had a few hours with it. It's got some trade offs with he 900f. The contrast is not as good on this panel due to them using their "xwide" filter to improve viewing angles, but it is notably brighter overall. All 4 HDMI ports are full bandwidth, and the input lag across the board is better (1080p/60 at ~19ms). Looks like I got a stellar panel, too. No DSE, banding, vignetting, or stuck pixels to note (so far).

This may not have the bells and whistles of the Samsung Q8 I was comparing it with, but side by side I really preferred the more natural color on the Sony to the cartoonish look on the Sammy. Plus, it supports THX, DolbyVision, and eArc (which I've learned allows me to pass multichannel audio via arc for my PC to my soundbar, which the Samsung couldn't do. No audio lag, no need for optical cables. Bonus. Most importantly, the motion is smooth as a buttah. I am pleased.
did you set the picture mode to gaming? That improves the input lag, a lot.
If so carry on.

I test input lag on the worst offender of them all.

Two are. The other two are the rears because I couldn't find a good spot to put them down low since the room is open behind the couch.

The only 1080p source I've tested is my Switch, and the input lag is practically imperceptible.

...and I can't comment enough on how excited I am that this display passes Dolby, DTS, and multi-channel PCM to my 5.1 soundbar.

does the sound bar support e-arc? Curious if only the display needed to.
It should pass all formats now. Dolby 7.x/Atmos/DTS-X included

My Sony receiver got a firmware update to support e-Arc. My TV 2017 x900e did not.
Don't care anymore though. My Shield TV passes whatever to the AVR.

It doesn't. That is what was so surprising! It's a 2017 model Vizio.

Let me know how this works out for you. I asked about a similar layout 2 pages back and was steered towards not doing the atmos setup with ceiling rears since it negates the "bubble?" effect. I'm still running the speaker wire for it so that I can easily add them down the road if I decide to go that route.

I ran through Audyssey XT32 for the setup. Afterwards I watched a few Dolby Atmos demo videos (you can download them from their site and a few other places). With where my speakers are at it's still absolutely clear that sounds are coming from the left and right and directly above. I'm sure it'd be better if I had speakers down low for the rears, but I couldn't make it work.

I was just checking some things on my TV on the Sony site and noticed there is a new update out. I checked the current version on my TV and it is not the same as the update version. I checked the update settings on my TV and it is set to automatically update so I selected Search for update and it said I am on the most up to date version but according to the Sony Website I'm not.

The update is dated 4/23/19 so I'm going to try manually updating it via USB.

Can someone who has the Sony XBR65X900F (or a different size as the update affects all sizes of the 900F) check to see what version you are? The website says it should be PKG6.5850.xxxx but my TV says it's on PKG6.5629.0177NAA. I assume that's a lower version so I'm not sure why it's not updating.

I've had an update available for awhile that I declined due to some new Android permissions or something that had to be accepted. Look on the home screen of the Sony Android TV interface that pops up when you hit the Home button and you might see the notice about a new update waiting that you need to accept permissions for.

I'll check the version when I get home anyway to see what I'm on.

Thanks guys. I know that most manufacturers roll out updates in waves in case the updates causes issues so I figure it just hasn't gotten to me yet. I've been on r/Bravia on Reddit and see that others haven't received it yet and some say it has caused issues with booting after the update.

The other thing I noticed is that I don't have the option for Dolby Vision under HDR. I thought that was rolled out to the 900f last year.

Dolby Vision just happens automatically if you have HDR turned on. You'll see the logo pop up in the corner of the screen when it switches.

When I go to HDR Mode in the settings there are 4 options.

Off
Auto
HDR10
HLG

I would expect DV to show there also if it was enabled on my TV but I could be wrong. I haven't been able to find anything about it on the Sony page for the 900f.

I'll have to try playing a disc that has DV to see if I can get the DV symbol to pop up. If I hit display on the TV it shows 4K but not HDR. To see if HDR is displaying I have to go under Setting, Picture and Display, Picture Adjustments and HDR will display.

Never mind. I went on my XBox and did the TV test and it said it was capable of using DV for everything so I guess I'm just insane.

I thought I got my TV after this date but it seems 3D tv died a quiet death.

3D tech, but zero interest: TV manufacturers stop making set once hailed as future

It wasn't long ago that 3D television was being talked up as the next big revolution in home entertainment. But now it appears that the much-trumpeted concept has died an early death, as the only two major 3D TV makers have discontinued the product.

Last year giant TV maker Samsung announced it was stopping making 3D sets, and last week both LG and Sony followed suit, leaving no major manufacturers left in the market.

The firms admitted a lack of demand was behind the move, as consumers were not sold on the idea of sitting in their living rooms wearing a chunky pair of 3D glasses while watching TV.

Tim Alessi, LG's director of new product development, told tech website Cnet: "3D capability was never really universally embraced in the industry for home use, and it's just not a key buying factor when selecting a new TV," "Purchase process research showed it's not a top buying consideration, and anecdotal information indicated that actual usage was not high. "We decided to drop 3D support for 2017 in order to focus our efforts on new capabilities such as HDR, which has much more universal appeal."

A Sony representative also said: "Based on current market trends we decided not to support 3D for our 2017 models."

Now TV makers are instead focusing on newer technologies such as HDR, which displays a wider and richer range of colours, much brighter whites, and much deeper, darker blacks.

HDR appears to be proving more popular because it also allows for more natural, true-to-life colours that are closer to how people see them in real life.

Hype around 3D TV technology peaked around seven years ago around the release of the film "Avatar", the first animation which demonstrated how 3D could be used to create entertaining visual effects.

The flop is also thought to be related to a lack of "must see" 3D films in the years since Avatar's release.

It follows the failed popularity attempt of a separate invention which also required people to put on a clunky pair of spectacles - "Google Glass".

In 2012 Google invented the wearable smart technology which could perform a range of tasks from taking photographs to looking up maps.

But just three years later Google ceased production of Google Glass following lower than expected take-up. At the time it was criticized for being "embarrassing" to wear, lacking a specific purpose and being to similar to smartphones in terms of capability.

I tossed the 3D glasses, still in their boxes, into the bin of forgotten tech in the basement.
