I will definitely apply of what I've just read whenever I have to leave my vehicle for overseas deployment from time to time.

I'll be unwrapping my car from a 6 month hibernation next month. It hasn't been driven since, I plan to do oil, coolant, battery change.. etc etc.. My only question is, do I change oil FIRST before i even attempt to start the car, or do I just throw in a new battery, start it let it run and then change the oil? I do plan on turning over the motor without actually starting it first.

If the oil was fresh prior to storage, there is NO reason to swap it out after. If not, swap it out when you like as it really doesn't matter.

Thanks. The oil was changed prior to storage. I'm more worried about blowing my engine for some reason, because my car has been stagnant for half a year. I'll be going from Florida to New Mexico when i get back home.

To unabomber: why is that? IIRC, manufacturers usually recommend 6 months or XXXX miles between oil changes. It just seems as though you should, doesn't moisture typically get into the oil system after time too? I always thought that was the reason to change it after storage. Oh master unabomber, show us the light and explain to us why :bowdowntotheunabomber:

If anything, you should sign up for their catalog anyway as it's really killer. if your vehicle is stored outdoors, most would say a cover is not a good idea. Think about it.....6 months or a year of the cover flapping against your paint....think it through....it that better than having your car covered in pollen/dirt/bird bombs?
If your car is inside protected against the outside, then how can pollen, bird bombs, or ultraviolet rays get in? I can understand the dust and dirt.

Motor oil that is not used will stay fresh for YEARS. As long as the oil is fresh prior to storage, it will be the same as if in the bottle. And by fresh I would personally use the "week or so prior to/500 mile" rule.

Which material is best for my bugeye's car cover? Going to college so cost is an issue. Will probably keep in outside in driveway. Possibility of getting a garage space so I don't want outdoors only if possible. Thanks

Terrible idea. You get what you pay for. Look for something with microfiber on the inside so you don't scratch your paint to no end.

My car is going to be stored in my garage for 6 months. My dad said he'll start the car up sometimes and let the engine run for a little. But I won't be driven. Aside from a full tank of gas oil change an interior charcoal. And I don't think mice will be a problem. What else would you recommend? It will be stored from May-November.

So I have been storing my car in my (unheated) garage, only driving it around on the occasional weekend for errands/shopping, because I have a company car. Unfortunately it threw a CEL earlier this summer after being mostly unused for several months. I took it in to a local subaru specialist shop, and they told me that because I had gone past the due date of the oil change (but only 1500 miles), some of the oil had gone bad and caused a blockage inside the motor. We ran seafoam and new oil through it for a little over 600 miles, then I brought it back in for another oil change with more seafoam in it. It seemed to be fine for a while (no CEL) but one day it happened again. I cleared the CEL (battery disconnect method) and re started it, and it has been fine since. However, it'll be due for another oil change this December and I'll only have driven it about 500-600 miles probably.

My question is, is there anything I can do to safely increase time intervals between oil changes if I'm only driving less than 1k miles?

Any benefits to disabling the.fuel/ignition and just cranking it? Or poping a oil galley plug and using shop air not 90psi but light puffs to get.oil to pass through bearings and heads?

Does this apply to say.... A few years? Maybe an indefinite amount of time?

Say you had it in a garage with car cover the whole time and had no one one to look after it... Will all the oils lubes and gas be ok?

My car is taking a 6 month nap as we speak. Also USAF deployment, but definatly not complaining about it (make some money for car parts ). I took the battery out, put air in the tires, blocked it to leave the e brake down, gave her a good bath, added fuel stabilizer and a full tank of gas.

She's sitting in my garage right now so dont have to worry about the weather.

My 2013 STi has been sitting in a storage unit since the end of May. I'm deployed right now (bought it from a dealership and had it sent to my parents) and I won't come back until December sometime. Battery is disconnected and still has the plastic on everything.

I think it's sitting with <30 miles right now. Can't wait to get back and start driving it!
