we are all going to deteriorate at different speeds, and maybe your knees can still do cool things, like bend, so maybe not a thing you need to consider.

I like the look of the chonky 29er, you can get a 26 dirt jumper (pump track, whatever), and those look pretty sweet too, and if you have the same knee problems as I do, the larger frame options will make riding less sucky. well, at least less sucky for dealing with swollen knees for the next few days because your knees are at such an acute angle when in the saddle.
Having hemophelia-a (Sitting at 10-12% activated factor8) has me very aware of knee issues. I have been taking Glucosamine since I was 20. I do knee flexibility exercises all the time.

Welp, have spent the last month in 'dream build' mode. Finally finished the build on Sunday, took it for the inaugural voyage yesterday. Mah '21 S-Works Aethos -

Gathering components:

This frame is unbelievably light (uncut fork+frame=854g!):

Discovered new least favorite activity: D**king around with hydraulic cables - both routing and bleeding. Pic of installing some foam "churro" per Specialized.

Gathering the last o'the garmin bits:

Setting up syncro shifting, learning Di2:

Teh bike:

Thoughts:
* I was completely certain I wanted to build it myself; first for the experience, second to keep me busy for awhile, third because there wasn't an S-Works model to my liking.
* Shimano was a PITA to deal with. Shortages on everything meant I had to source from all over the country. Mishaps with e-tube cables and length mean I will probably go eTap on any future builds.
* After a lot of consideration, decided to get a completely second set of sensors, power meter, lights so I wouldn't have to swap them between bikes. I'm really glad I did. Not only for the ease of use, but I have to say the Garmin Varia stuff is amazing. The light network was easy to setup, plain works with the head unit and the radar feature of the RTL515 is something I don't think I can ride without anymore.
* Di2 + Garmin is pretty awesome. I hardly used the head unit for very much before. The ability to change screens or do things with the press of a button at the top of the shifter = game changer.
* Short term: Still working on cockpit. Need to cut the steerer tube some, find the right stem. Not sure I like the Roval Alpinist post either. The Specialized Power saddles = good stuff, comfier than my Fizik Temp Argo R1.
* Long term: May upgrade wheels in the future.

Was initially considering an Emonda SLR or a Tarmac SL7. I'm glad I went with the Aethos. I absolutely effing love this bike. On the first ride out I was thinking of just doing 15-20 miles to go home and re-adjust everything, tighten bolts, etc. Wasn't even really paying attention and wound up riding over 40 miles. Prior to purchase I did not test ride and was going purely off of reviews. I never understood reviewers references to stiffness, liveliness, steering input, descent confidence, etc and always thought the superlatives were bull****.. But they nailed it. Everything they described was there. Simply put, an utter joy to ride.

nice, I've assembled from frame up a few times, and I enjoy the process.

the murdered out look is always appealing to me on a bike. I did that with my first fixie, except it had a lime green chain, because fixie.

how do you like the riser drops? I've been reading about them more and more, maybe it's just google seeing my page views and algorithming me.

Bars are S-Works Carbon Aerofly Hover. I didn't really like the bars that came on the standard Aethos. Was a combination of what was available at the LBS + somewhat similar to the bars on my gravel bike + Di2 routing.

I have Ritchey WCS Carbon VentureMax bars on my gravel bike. They flare out by a pretty large amount.. So going to these S-Works bars was a bit weird at first, given how much more tucked it feels. They also have a slightly deeper drop. But the reach was good and actually felt more comfortable perched on the top/aero section at certain times. Hand position felt comfortable all the way around and the drop wasn't too steep despite my desk job inflexibility. Thumbs up

AXS has its own little niggles though. Shimano is one and done, plug it in every few months and that's it. Kinda like tubes vs. tubeless, more setup vs. more maintenance. My big thing is that it's impossible to forget a Di2 battery on the charger.

Hopefully Shimano does the same thing with the transition to 12-speed as they did with the transition to 11-speed...which is to only require new derailleurs.

The buttons on the hoods are such a goofy thing, but now that I have it I use it all the time. Di2 is amazing in the way it does so many little things so well.

Reviewers are riding lots of bikes and not getting used to any of them. My Boone is stiffer under power and rides smoother than my Emonda, but it's subtle so it requires recent experience and a critical eye. It's not a noodle or a jackhammer either, just different.

Edit: the Emonda: https://i.imgur.com/lF3KMQl.jpeg

Sweet ride though, I know you're going to love it.

I think I spot a left crank 4iiii PM there--you can ditch the Garmin cadence sensor, if so.

I'm running that 50/34 & 11-34 (non di2) setup on one of my bikes and it's like ****ing cheating going up 10+% grades.

Newer di2 models with D-Fly and paired to a Wahoo or newer Garmin will embed shift data into the Fit file, and you can use a few different visualizers to generate stuff from it. I don't really pay attention to what gearing I'm using in the moment, just trying to optimize cadence--but it's cool to see what gear combos you use the most. And how little we really spend in big chainring + small cog. This histogram was from a solo climbing ride.

I use WKO5, so I don't need to do anything special, but this is another visualizer site that I know of. Maybe Garmin Connect does it natively.

Garmin does not, but Di2stats has mega-gear use statistics if you want to figure out if you're using the right sized cassette.

The small jumps in my 11-30 are really nice and noticeably better than 11-32, but I wish I would have stayed with compact chainrings and gone with the 11-28 option.

Since getting rid of my road bike, my only option for road riding is when I put slicks on my gravel bike, which is 46/30 & 11-34. It isn’t too hard to top out but I can spin at pretty much any cadence I want on climbs.

And that Aethos is awesome.

Yep, 4iii left. Thank! Will try it out without the garmin cadence sensor. Early on found I was still working on fitness and 11-32 wasnt going to cut it. I'm actually running a custom 11-36 but couldn't figure out how to customize in Di2 setup. Mullet setup on my gravel bike = 50-34, 11-42 and fantastic!

Ah, I see. I don't think the Shimano e-tube software will let you set up any "unsupported" configs, but it obviously makes the shift!

You can do anything with Di2...except get it to recognize a non-standard cassette.

Mentally, I like having the bailout gear...I hardly touch it, but if I'm on an unfamiliar climb, it's nice knowing you have a get out of jail free card. It's even better when you're nearing the limit and you look at the screen or look down and know you're still in the middle of the cassette.

I do agree though, the 11-30 has better steps. The Shimano 11 speed XT cassettes are kinda weird like that too. The 11-42 and 11-46 only differ in the last cog, IIRC.

I accept that things are going to suck at some point regardless so I try to optimize for the most common use scenarios while ensuring I can survive the parts that suck.

It's been about 2 months with my bike. I'm down 15 lbs and even after hitting my longest ride yet I'm really not that sore. Looking at the rigs here I'm no where on any of these radars, but it's nice to get back into it.

Did road for years in my teens, then switched to MB. I got OK at it and had a 10 mile hilly loop I could do in about an hour. Even though I was no where near trails I wound up buying a new MB back in 2010. It served me well for the years. Living in NOVA now the best ride option I have is the W&OD trail. For those who don't know, it's 45 miles of paved over rail road tracks the go from DC to Purcellville, VA. Towards DC it's quite urban and a lot of traffic with walkers and just a lot of people. Luckily I live on the west end of the trail where it's hilly and secluded, and most of my stretch is even tree covered. My mountain bike wasn't optimal and getting old, and with a bike shortage it was tough to stay under $2K for a new bike. I did find one on line and had it shipped. Under $1400 I got a new in box 2019 Fuji Cross. Had a shop build it from box and wound up donating my old MB to them.
My first ride, from Leesburg to Purcellville was 22 miles total. 11 out and 11 back. Averaged just under 10MPH. Not bad for a fat old smoker climbing the highest part of the trail. Just finished my 12th ride on Friday. I went east to start this time. I hit the trail @ MM 34 and rode to MM 27, then back up to MM 45 and back to MM 34. Add in a few brewery stops at the end. All told I hit 37 miles that day averaging 12.5MPH.

This has been fun, I just need to figure out how to post pics again.

Ganna takes his second gold in a row in the TT WC with what will be no doubt be mindboggling power numbers.

WVA voices his disappointment after his fourth silver medal in the past year-ish (2020 TT, 2020 RR, 2021 Olympic RR, 2021 TT). Wout people problems.
