Things made for the Japanese domestic market, not necessarily in.

For example, a USDM Corolla made in Indiana (?) or a USDM Focus, made in Mexico.

What are Japans rules regarding RHD? I honestly don’t know.

Japan allows LHD, but VAG sells their cars in Australia, England, some Asian states....and Japan. They have RHD in their portfolio. A JDM Audi would be a car produced in Germany, for the Japanese market, right hand driven.

Pretty interesting since they didn't mention needing a crash test. Assuming the regular A/S4 Avants suffice, they only mention EPA testing.

I’m sure it’s the same as every one, including that 22-B: It’s not.

The 2000-2001 RS4 is on this list from the NHTSA, which as I parse it would exempt it from crash testing.

That 22-B is here 100% legal. Certain vehicles are on a list of eligible vehicles that can be imported on a Show or Display exemption due to "historical or technological significance" and can be driven 2500 miles a year. I'm not sure how the Audi is here, but the Subaru is on the official list.

“Legal”

It’s not Federalized, therefore it’s not here legally. It is here on an exemption and can be told “not any more” at any time. Is that likely? Probably not.

Edit: Unless something has changed, it’s also not on the exemption list. For some ****ed up reason, the only forbidden Subaru fruit on that list is a 2006 Forester.

Do you have a personal import scheme? That's a loophole some people use here to bring in cars that otherwise cannot be registered. If you live overseas and own a vehicle there for more than 12 months it can be brought back here and registered. It's mostly cost prohibitive as there is a load of work to have the vehicle modified to comply but it happens.

Nope.

Literally not even Bill Gates was able to pull it off (I think he did eventually get his 959 Federalized, after a decade)

Item #51 on the .pdf under Show or Display Purposes for Approved/Disapproved vehicles. This is different from the list of cars that have already been emission/crash tested or otherwise proven to be compatible with US specs.

Some sort of forward control cab would have made a lot more sense.
