While you guys are on the subject I'm looking for a direct answer.. For 2018 WRX STI is there a list of CARB/SMOG legal mods? I realize it's a long way before smog check but rather no go through changing parts all the time. Plus looking for moderate power gain..

Catbacks, AOS, and intercoolers don't require EOs so those are legal (noise restrictions on the catback is a separate issue). Parts that have gone through the CARB evaluation and have been granted an exemption are legal. Parts that have an exemption and will give you a moderate power gain are generally exclusive of each other. You can search for EOs on parts here. The whole thing is moot since you'd need a tune (illegal) to see the power gains.
The real question is, what mods can you make, get some power, and still pass smog without swapping parts? Quite a bit, actually. |

I think they uped it to 8 years on new cars before you have to get a smog check. most bang for your buck is going to be a cobb intake with a access port. Any down pipe will be illegal. so stage 1 is about as far as you can go

Anybody know a smog place? Pm me. I just moved to SoCal recently. I'll compensate for your referral. Thanks!

I’ve gotten lucky over the years until now avoiding STAR smog. I’m running an Invidia catted DP + CARB intake with a stage 2 tune. I was told by someone that if I flash the stock map and drive some miles I should be fine with the catted DP. I’ve also read that anything other than a stock DP is an auto fail.
Any opinions? And DMs are always welcome for SoCal smog places lol |

Depends on the guy testing but yes, anything other than stock is a fail. I thought SPT was the only CARB approved intake but I could be wrong.
The test is computer only now and so far a Cobb map isn't a problem even with disabled CELs. |

a friend of mine said they are working on ways to look for tunes.. I figure that if the dealerships can figure out if you have a tune its just a matter of time before the state figures out how to d it too

And another FYI for how stupid the state laws are, I had gotten State Referee'd in Oct. I finally got the appointment for the inspection after 6 weeks of waiting, just to be failed for the Cobb airbox I had. It had a CARB number attached to it. But it was up to 2010, and I have a 2012. And everyone knows that 08-14 are identical, but the state failed me because of an outdated sticker. Thankfully, Cobb stepped up and sent me a replacement sticker that was current for my year. And it passed the next time with just a sticker.
