Colonial Pipeline - Southeast gas shortage thread
I thought I'd start this, surprised to see nothing in OT. As I live in the northeast where we get zero oil from Texas (all is from the middle east as it's cheaper), I made it a point to look at all the gas stations today during a 90 minute errand. I'm in eastern Mass. No stations appeared to have more than a few cars. The one price I checked was $2.89 which is a little high, but not out of line.
How's things elsewhere? CNN shows lines and a station with $6.99 a gallon gas and stations out of gas. I told my son about the lines and such from the Arab embargo in the 70's, where they put in minimums of $5 because clowns (going on now) want to top off their tank. Put in 39 cents, click because full and drive away. |

I've never paid $2.89/gal as long as I've been driving. I do recall back in 2008 prices in SCIC spiked to $5.99-$6.99/gal, but those inflated prices were mostly in Hollywood near the studios where they know PAs and Teamsters are filling up on production's dime, but everyone else who lives in the area gets boned. |

I've seen it go from as low as $0.79 all the way to $4.15 in my state. At the low point, I'd paid less to fill up my wife's SUV and our boat's 70gal tank than I paid at the high point just to fill up the tank on my wife's hybrid. I fully expected an open revolt in this country the first time it went above $1.50. |

Pipeline operations resumed Wednesday, it's a fake 'shortage' driven by the same mentality of people that say hmm I saw something on the news about ___, I better buy way more than I need in case there's not enough, which actually creates a temporary shortage.
Fuel of various types flows through these pipelines across the US to regional storage tanks and then is distributes more locally through smaller pipelines, barges, trains, trucks, ect. If people panic buy and try to hoard it's hard to ramp up local deliveries, especially right now, to make up for it but give it a week or two and everything will be back to "normal". Overall it really makes me want to buy an electric vehicle to replace my Mazda3 commuter so I don't have to worry about this nonsense. |

I wouldn’t replace a car that didn’t need replacing. Ours replaced a 98 Forester with 343k on it.

I was able to find 87 early on in the week easily so I have been driving my truck all week. I'm seeing a decent amount of stations out of gas, especially premium. Hopefully this situation is cleared up by next week; have plans to head to the Asheville area and I want to bring my STi.

I'm supposed to drive across the state tomorrow.
I *think* it's likely to be okay, but it does make me nervous. |

I'm in central SC.
People blew **** out Tuesday but I saw several "brand stations" that were out and were back open yesterday. Someone's getting deliveries. Flew to Nashville this morning to pick up a vehicle and I'm currently about 100 miles from home. I stopped when I knew a full tank would get me home. That was about 100 miles north of ATL. First place I stopped has gas and a couple of free pumps, I was back on the road 5 minutes. That's all I got. |

That pic was staged. Please don't turn OT into PP or, even worse, Facebook.

Deliveries were supposed to be available to nearly every place by noon today.
Local station close to me that was out Wed night had gas this afternoon. So yeah, resupply is flowing. Also latest report is that they shut the pipeline down simply because their billing software got compromised and they couldn't figure out how to bill customers for deliveries. Not because of any safety or control issues. |
