Default 2020 Infiniti Q50 Goes V6 Only, Increases Pricing

2020 Infiniti Q50 Goes V6 Only, Increases Pricing

Despite sales of the Infiniti Q50 looking a little light this year, Nissan’s luxury arm has decided the model moves in numbers substantial enough to keep it on offer. The same cannot be said for the vehicle’s entry level 2.0-liter turbo, however. The motor will be going away for the 2020 model year, leaving the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 as the sedan’s only available powerplant.

Replacing the base 2.0 Pure will be the 3.0t Pure. While a seven-speed automatic transmission continues sending power to the rear wheels (AWD is optional), base models now produce a claimed 300 horsepower. Considering the old 2.0-liter only produced 208 hp, you might think the change comes with a hefty price increase. But you’d be wrong. Infiniti is only asking for $36,400 (plus a $1,025 destination fee) for the base level Q50. That’s just $750 more than last year’s base model four banger.

While not as lavishly equipped as higher trimmed models, the 3.0t Pure offers 17-inch alloys, a dual exhaust system, LED headlamps, leather (and leatherette) upholstery, eight-way power seats, dual-zone climate control, and a bevy of convenience/safety items you’d expect to find on a premium Japanese sedan (Android Auto, Apple Car Play, automatic wipers, emergency braking, keyless entry, etc).

You can also get all-wheel drive, but paint options are rather limited. It looks like Infiniti is only offering base models in grayscale.

Opting for a more interesting hue or Infiniti’s various equipment packages requires stepping up to the Q50 3.0t Luxe trim. While the motor is identical, Luxe offers an upgraded interior materials, moonroof, 18-inch wheels, and HomeLink capabilities. It begins at $38,850 before destination.

The 3.0t Sport incorporates the Essential, ProASSIST and Sensory packages available on Luxe while adding sport-inspired aesthetics, 19-inch wheels, Bose audio system, and heated sport seats with thigh extensions. It begins at $48,500, without destination, but you’ll want to splurge and get the 2020 Q50 Red Sport 400 for $54,250 if it’s on your radar.

Red Sport variants include all of the previously mentioned items by default and receive a 3.0-liter motor tuned up to 400 hp. Models also receive unique interior and exterior enhancements, special paddle shifters, quilted sport seats with red contrast stitching, red brake calipers, and exclusive 19-inch wheels. While expensive, Infiniti doesn’t let you add much. Save for a few accessories and the optional “Proactive Package,” it’s as loaded as the automaker can make it.

Infiniti has also added an updated version of its InTouch infotainment system to the Q50, which splits the central display into an 8-inch upper and 7-inch lower unit. While not a perfect system, previous examples of InTouch have provided countless ways to interface with the car. You just need a little time to familiarize yourself with the arrangement before it feels truly useful.

Nissan is really milking this model aren't they? It's been out since late 2013, 6 years on and very few/minimal changes. Haven't seen any test mules or any concepts of what the next iteration is going to be, if any. Come to think of it, same goes for the Lexus IS. In the mean time, zee Germans have continued their assault on the 3er, C class and A4

Yup, agreed. Nissan/Infiniti are looking nearly as slow to revise/update their platforms as Subaru.

i guess if you consider transitioning from a 3.7 NA VQ engine to a 3.0t VR 400 hp engine a minimal change

say, can you tell us more about the 2020 STI engine?

I really hope the reason Nissan / Infiniti have not released a vehicle worth a damn is because they have been silently investing all that money into next gen tech (ev). I hope they don't go the way or Mitsubishi...

That's pretty hopeful. It appears they simply have been run extremely poorly and are going to have difficulties going forward. Outside of the long on the tooth GTR they don't sell anything remotely close to best in class as their product offerings are dated and mediocre at best.

they are a great bargain when you buy a year or two old.

bought an '18 Q60 RS 400hp AWD coupe with 16k miles, fully loaded every option, 7 year CPO warranty.

sticker was $65k+ ... paid $42k.

Yeah, these are pretty great cars. They join the Genesis lineup in the odd category for me where I probably wouldn't even consider them new, but would snap one up in a heartbeat when the right amount of depreciation sets in.

And what chassis is that motor residing in? Aesthetics and underpinnings are the same. But good eye brah, you caught me.

They are asking too much money. 60k for this is pretty crazy. Then again, prices for everything have gone crazy.

MSRP is irrelevant considering the deprecation on these quasi-luxury cars. I also doubt most people pay anywhere near sticker on an Infiniti or a Genesis for that matter. They're an incredible value when 1-2 years old and barely used with ~20k miles or less.

I'd much rather have one of these over a brand new $35k Legacy. They aren't great luxury cars by any means, but for the slightly nicer than a Camry market, they are quite a good value after the first idiot buys it.

^ This is true. They get considered a turd because they aspire to compete with MB, BMW, etc. So of course they fall short, but car for car, they are better than a lot of cars out there. I have a 2008 G37 that I picked up a couple years old, with 35K on it, for way less than 1/2. Car for car, it's a much better car than either of my Subarus: bugeye WRX with a ej207 engine/trans swap, and a 2008 Outback XT 5MT Limited (essentially a LGT wagon). The most troublesome car of the bunch by far is the Outback. I supercharged the G37 65K ago, and it hasn't missed a beat. I find the interior materials either as bad or better than the Outback, which is the top of the range for Subaru in 2008, and the Infiniti doesn't squeak and rattle nearly as badly as either Subaru.

That said, I wouldn't touch one of the new ones. They have a really good engine, but I wouldn't touch the steering. and they don't offer a manual anymore. I rented a new one once, and it was fine, kind of like the highest optioned Accord, but with RWD.

Yep, a high trim Accord with RWD is a good comparison. They price them new to compete with BMWs, but they don't come anywhere near close. I'm actually considering one for a commuter alongside some other lightly used semi-premium brand cars just because you get A LOT of car for what the used ones cost. Either that or a new Mazda3.

the 300hp versions are pretty cheap and can be made as fast or faster than the Redsport pretty easily, but its my daily driver and i wanted to keep warranty. maybe a small conservative boost bump with a JB4 in the future.

getting a "Tesla" android screen in the spring to solve the gripe about the crap infotainment system.

2020 Infiniti Q50:

Here’s the Problem With This Car

Some cars are so awesome they receive unanimous approval. Others crush the competition with unbeatable specs. And then there are polarizing cars that we spend an excessive amount of time arguing about.

One such model is the Infiniti Q50. More specifically, the 2020 Infiniti Q50 Signature Edition AWD we recently tested.

At $47,445 (Canada) plus freight and delivery, this compact luxury sedan is relatively well equipped and motivated by a strong twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 300 horsepower along with 295 pound-feet of torque.

Many people will tell you the Q50 is a good car, yet it has a hard time finding buyers in a segment that also includes the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS, Cadillac CT4, Genesis G70 and Acura TLX. By the way, it’s the same story with the two-door Infiniti Q60.

So, what’s the problem, here? Is the Brand to Blame?

Some claim that Infiniti products are bad sellers for the simple fact that they’re, well, Infinitis. Luxury customers seem to care a lot about the logo on the grille and the aura around the car, perhaps more than the car itself or the driving experience.

Want another example? Take Genesis. Hyundai’s luxury brand offers exceptional vehicles, and we have nothing against those who buy a Genesis G70 over a C-Class, but sales are marginal at best. The company has still a long way to go to convince fans of German luxury cars.

Unlike Genesis, however, Infiniti has been on the market long enough to establish a presence and make a name for itself. Celebrated models like the G35 and G37 have shown in the past that Infiniti can be more than a fancy version of Nissan. Having said that, it doesn’t have the same brand power yet as the German competitors.

Could it be the Car?

While compact luxury cars have faded in recent years as a growing number of people turn to SUVs, the Infiniti Q50 is struggling a lot more than its rivals. The sad reality is that this product just doesn’t cut it.

Look at the design. The Q50 is unquestionably a stylish sedan (and the Q60 a futuristic coupe) from the outside, but when you open the doors the picture isn’t so pretty. Simply put, there’s no flair. The cabin features two screens and lots of buttons and controls, but you clearly don’t get the impression of sitting in a luxurious car like you do in a BMW, Audi or Lexus.

On the road, it gets worse. The Q50 is a solid car and you can somewhat feel the Nissan GT-R’s DNA in the chassis when you push it in corners. However, the steering is a mess. It feels artificial, literally. Instead of being mechanically connected to the front wheels like in a regular car, the system uses drive-by-wire technology where a computer receives steering input and then sends a signal to a different type of rack and pinion to turn the wheels.

When the company introduced it a few years ago, they claimed it would reduce driver fatigue (maybe) and improve the driving experience (definitely not the case). There’s no feedback at all from the steering wheel and the car automatically takes care of the minute changes we normally make while driving.

For enthusiasts, that’s more frustrating than anything. You can’t feel the car’s limits or a real connection with the road. Average Joes won’t mind, but then again, average Joes don’t buy luxury sport sedans.

The Infiniti G35/G37 kicked many German butts during its time and rightfully gained traction among customers. Its successor pales in comparison and has become a rare sight on Canadian roads.
