I think yes and no. For people who just want 1 car and live in areas where it snows, having the optional AWD in a performance car is nice to have. I’ll hold out final thoughts until the car comes out. It given the new design leaks, I don’t see this being a great car.

Hopefully I’m wrong though.

Well if you aren't into Audi's yeah and the RS models IMO are overpriced when you consider RS4/5 performance is in line with the new M340i xDrive. Audi's TT V6 is no match for the B58 or S58.

rwd + snow tires > awd and all/season or summer tires though

they just want to cry that they need awd for the snow, none of them will actually use the car in the snow or change out the tires.

Ive driven my rwd car with snow tires through snow higher than the front splitter and did just fine.

AWD + Snow Tires = fun. I'm seeing more and more people equipping AWD vehicles on snow tires in the winter.

Seeing WRX's on summer tires puttering around is a sad sight.

Default 2021 M3 Has 510HP Manual

Next BMW M3 and M4 Will Get 510 HP and a Manual

The once go-to Bimmer makes a case to lead the luxury sports car market again.

2021 bmw m3BMW
The BMW M3 was the go-to luxury sports sedan for years, decades even. But then the leader slowed down a little bit, maybe resting on its whatever the German equivalent of laurels is, and Mercedes-Benz—and to a lesser extent Alfa and Audi—caught up with both power and poise. Now, for the next-generation M3 and M4, BMW wants to make its case to be back on top of the leaderboard.

“With each BMW M automobile, we put motorsport technology on the road,” says Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of management of BMW M GmbH. “The new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé embody this principle in a particularly intensive way, because both models stand unmistakably in the tradition of the most successful touring car worldwide. And results of the test drives show us that the new model generation is significantly superior to that of its predecessors in terms of performance.”

Among the test drives Flasch is referring to are the laps both Ms are currently turning on the Sachsenring in Germany in anticipation of their September reveal. What we’ve been waiting for is more power. And BMW is now delivering.

The twin-turbocharged straight-six under the hood of both the BMW M3 and M4 will deliver 480 hp in standard models and 510 hp in the Competition versions. That’s 7 more hp than the most powerful Mercedes-AMG C63. Those non-competition models will come with a six-speed manual (nice) and rear-wheel drive (also nice). Competition models will get the option of an eight-speed automatic, and torque will top out at 479 lb-ft.

“For customers who prefer a puristic performance experience and particularly intense interaction with their vehicle, the model variants with a manual transmission constitute an offer that is unique in this segment,” explains Dirk Häcker, head of Development M Automobiles and BMW Individual. “On the other hand, with the Competition versions of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé, we are addressing maximum dynamics in regard to power development and transfer—initially with classic rear-wheel drive and, at a later date, our four-wheel-drive system M xDrive.”

The M3 and M4 will get specific suspension tuning as well, along with changes in the braking system. BMW picked the 2.28-mile Sachsenring—one of the stops on the German Touring Car Championship—because of its long straights, hairpin bends and hilly sections.

Hopefully in September we can all agree with Flasch about the new M3 and M4 being significantly superior to its predecessors.

These are going to be monsters. If the S58 engine can propel a 4500 lb SUV to 0-60 in 3.3 seconds and 11.6 second 1/4 mile there's no telling how fast a vehicle packing 1k lbs less will be.

3500 pounds? Not a chance. I'd be surprised if these things came out to less than 3,900.

If less than 3800 lbs I will be a big fan I think. Otherwise I think I would prefer the M2.

The M4 and M3 are more of a “touring” vehicle at this point based upon how large they are. The M2 is amazing and easy to toss around. It’s also easy to try and toss it around and lose control. I really did love my M2 (sold last week). I’ll probably get back into one or a cayman in the future.

M2 is the new M3. Or something like that.

The E46/E39 generation of 3/5 series was the perfect size, IMO. E90/E60 is not bad either, but then after that they just kept ballooning.

E46 is still my favorite M vehicle that I've owned and driven. Will have another.

The current G20 3 Series is lighter than the outgoing F30. Hard to imagine the RWD M versions being any heavier than last gen although the AWD versions are going to probably be in the range of 3700 lbs.

M2 weighs in around 3500 lbs and F82 M4 in at 3585 lbs. People don't realize that the M2 is a porker when you consider how much it weighs relative to it's big brothers.

Default Next-generation BMW M3 (G80) to feature 493 bhp and an optional xDrive system

I’ve always wanted an M3, and now that I can finally afford one, I’m going to have to pass. Too big, too heavy, too ugly, and even too much power.

Go drive an M2 and M4 back to back, the handling characteristics and overall feel are worlds different. Weight might be close the M4 is a damn luxobarge in size.

Default This Is Your Best Look At The New BMW M3 GTS

Quote:

This Is Your Best Look At The New BMW M3 GTS

And yes, 'those' exhausts will happen.

The BMW M3 and its coupe sibling, the M4, are set for a full reveal very soon and as fanboys have slowly started to get over that horrendous front grille arrangement, excitement has been building. We had more reason to celebrate the M3 and ignore its unsightly front end when we learned that BMW is developing an M3 wagon - something enthusiasts have been begging for since forever. But this week BMW ruined things for us again. A spy shot revealed what appears to be the next M4 GTS with a horrible exhaust arrangement that makes the front look good in comparison. How would this be implemented on a BMW M3 CSL/GTS? BMW43 on Instagram has the answer.

We're not sure if there's something in the water over in Munich or if somebody is trying to be a less appreciated designer than Chris Bangle, but we really thought that 2020 couldn't get any worse until we saw this. Nevertheless, there's not much we can do about it so we may as well try to get accustomed to it, and renders like these do help in that respect. Like the F82 M4 GTS before it, the artist has given the G80 M3 GTS - should such a thing ever exist - bright orange pinstripes on the multispoke wheels and rear diffuser. This accent would likely be mirrored on the front lip.

A lightweight carbon fiber wing will sit atop the trunk lid while the artist has also added a dark accent to the rocker panels and fins behind the rear wheels. The usual carbon roof will remain in place too. Perhaps a more aggressively bulging hood will be a feature, too. Whatever happens with the rest of the car, we can't help but think that an exhaust system that looks like a gas mask is a horrible idea. It's not often we say this before a new model arrives, but we really can't wait for the following generation. Hopefully, that model will be less hurtful to our eyes.
