Default Consumer Reports Cautions Shoppers To Avoid The Chevy Colorado

Consumer Reports Cautions Shoppers To Avoid The Chevy Colorado
Quote:
The Chevy Colorado is a pickup truck that shoppers should avoid buying, according to the auto industry experts over at Consumer Reports.

CR recently published its new list of “Popular Cars to Avoid and What to Buy Instead,” which does exactly what’s on the tin: lists hot-selling vehicles that aren’t so great and suggests high-quality, reliable alternatives. The Chevy Colorado was named as a vehicle to avoid in the Compact Pickup Truck category, with CR saying the truck has poorly designed seats, an awkward driving position and less-than-adequate reliability.

“Sure, this truck is far more refined than the rough-and-tumble Toyota Tacoma that perennially tops the sales charts in this class. But ultimately the Colorado and twin GMC Canyon break little new ground beyond offering an extremely efficient diesel engine,” CR says, referencing the truck’s available 2.8L LWN four-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel engine. “Big truck fans might love that, but the diesel groaning grows tiresome around town. The real deal-breakers here are the seats and driving position. Looking at the ratings, the below-average predicted reliability is a deterrent and owners rate satisfaction as merely average. Together, these survey-based insights bring down the Colorado’s overall score.”

Based on this, CR suggests car shoppers in the market for a Compact Pickup buy a Honda Ridgeline instead. The Ridgeline, by comparison, has “car-like” comfort, a refined ride, better-than-average predicted reliability and good predicted owner satisfaction. CR acknowledges the Ridgeline’s shortcomings, however, which include a shallow bed, limited off-road capability and a sub-par 5,000-pound towing capacity.

It’s worth noting that the Chevy Colorado is not a Compact Pickup as CR classifies it, but rather a mid-size. General Motors does not currently compete in the compact pickup class in North America. The Ford Maverick, which entered production earlier this month, is the only true compact pickup offering available in the United States.

GM applied minor changes and updates to the 2022 Chevy Colorado, including the introduction of a new Trail Boss package for both the LT and Z71 trim levels. The truck will continue to offer the same powertrain options, which include the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGZ gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engine and the aforementioned 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine.

In other news the sky is blue and urine is yellow. I’ve been avoiding GM products for decades.

Huh, CR recommends a Honda. Who would’ve guessed that.

GM is crap , but the Ridgeline has had, and still has its share of issues.

145k miles into my Colo and I beg to differ. Its a great truck and vehicle.

Funny about the driving position, its one of the big things about the interior that i liked, the taco had a terrible driving position and headroom i thought. I log in lots of long drives and i love the interior.

I do not agree on dinging any vehicle on predicted reliability. Granted GM is kind of easy to do that with, BUT every single vehicle built today is worlds more reliable than a vehicle built 15 years ago.

Hell I drive a grand Cherokee with 6500 miles on it. It is a small miracle that I have not died in a fire yet.

But it still starts every morning... so far...

I never would have thought id own a gm product, but after researching and learning about the truck, and several test drives, i made my choice and im happy with it. The others are good trucks too, but i wouldnt be happy with them. The twins are much more engineered than the half tons, and dont have the profit margin and super cheap manufacture of the half tons and up. Gm spends much less making silverados than the twins. Ive experienced gms lameness on other vehicles, and this one has had me questioning whether its a gm because its been so good. Isuzu engine? Check. Global vehicle engineering? Check. Assembly in the states? Check. Havent had any build quality issues, and im pleasantly surprised. Im gonna keep this truck till 300k unless something radical happens. Goes in for its tbelt wpump next week.

The title of this thread is misleading.

"Cautions to avoid" sounds a lot different than "Sure, this truck is far more refined than the rough-and-tumble Toyota Tacoma that perennially tops the sales charts in this class. But ultimately the Colorado and twin GMC Canyon break little new ground beyond offering an extremely efficient diesel engine.."

I will say the partial leather seats were indeed oddly uncomfortable. Mine is the LT model with the basic cloth seats, and they are fine. Did have a bad lift pump within the first 3 months, but since then it's been solid.

Guess I've been lucky. Definitely don't get the "diesel groaning around town" - it's as quiet as any other engine.

Odd to compare to the Ridgeline, which is more of an SUV with a pickup bed.

Different strokes for different folks I guess?

If I'm going BOF I'm getting a Tacoma, but it's a 6mt w/four doors in a good/bright color
If I'm stuck with an Automatic trans I'll just get a Ridgeline, they finally have a good color now.
I hate the way trucks ride, especially mid-sized trucks; the Ridgeline rides great and has 5,000lbs of towing, and the same payload as the competition - If I needed to tow more than 5,000lbs, I'd probably but a 1/2 ton anyways; that's a pretty big boat or camper.

I'm not sole sourcing recommendations from CR either; something something grain of salt.

Had a 2017 Colorado 4cyl 6-speed manual extra cab for about a year and half. Had a minor tranny leak that was fixed under warranty at about 5k miles but otherwise no issues. When our second child was on the way I traded it in for a 2018 Colorado WT crew cab V6. Has LT appearance pkg. Bought the truck for 26k. Tell me back in 2018 what truck you could by for 26k with a crew cab and 305hp V6?? The Tacoma is ancient, the frontier is ancient, and back then nothing else existed as the Ranger was still just coming on the scene. My 2018 now has 9k+ miles and been flawless. Seating position is just fine. Seats are comfortable with the only exception being that if you sit right on the edge there is hard plastic there when the cushion compresses. But you don't sit on the edge when driving. Sure, a ridgeline may be more comfy or have some other features but it's also a lot more expensive of a truck than a Colorado. And pandemic excluded, you could find Colorado's under sticker rather easily. Can't say the same for ridgeline or tacoma. Pros and Con's for all truck makes but to say to avoid the colorado makes no sense.

Think you'd have to be driving it flat out all the time to get 15mpg. With the diesel I get about 26-27mpg 'mixed', though more city than highway.

The V6 is plenty powerful. No, it's not a Raptor or TRX but it's plenty fast. Compared to V8's I've had no problem keeping up going up hill or even stopping some smart ass drivers from trying to speed up to cut me off on roads where lanes merge (lots of V8 lifted trucks here in town think they drive sports cars). Loaded down the truck has plenty of power to drive normally without the need to floor it to keep up. As for mpg, I average 18-20 100% city driving. On the fwy it will hit 30+ assuming consistent speeds without traffic. I've got as good as 34mpg driving from Vegas to Ca. Also, while I could have got a V8 silverado or Ram for a few thousand more I didn't want/need a big truck. Full size trucks today are a pain in the ass in parking lots, don't fit in a lot of driveways without hanging the ass out on the sidewalk, and in my case would not fit on the side of my house where I park my truck when not in use (mini RV parking area). Not everyone needs or wants a full size V8 truck. Hell, if they still made mini trucks like in the 80's and 90's I'd probably have one of those instead. All I want/need is something to haul some minor things with on occasion and something to drive when it rains when I leave my C8 at home (streets flood easy here).

i had ZR2 almost 3 years . Even my wife said it always sounded like it was straining to keep up on highway. I never got over 17 mpg and mostly 15.8 or 9.
Get a full sized pickup as not much more cost and a V8 gets same mileage with tons more room. I moved to a RAM 1500 with ecodiesel gets 22-23 and plenty power and good acceleration. Geeze the interior better than a Benze too. Very quiet and smooth.

Well, if your wife says so, then i guess that wraps it all up now doesnt it?
I dunno what elevation youre at or what driving style, but i know plenty of people with the 6 cyl colo and they all get way better mpg than that at 6000-7000ft.
No, most of us dont want a full sizer, hence the midsize purchase. The ecodiesels have their own problems, and can be costly in their failures.
We have heard your story the several times youve posted it. Your bad experience is an outlier.

You know you're a GM owner when you're bragging about your vehicle being flawless with less than 10k miles on it.

Alt title: You know you're on a Subaru forum when 10k flawless miles is an unusual thing.

I dunno, it's a weird article - the truck isn't anything special, but both directions for that.

Every Chevrolet I've ever owned has needed a tow. Current one I bought on a Monday evening, by Saturday morning I had to call a friend for a tow.

Gms rep is def earned, but im still a firm believer that the twins are a strong move to break through that rep. They dont seem to have nearly as common of breakdowns as most of their other vehicles. Not perfect, but markedly better than gm has achieved otherwise. Mostly transmission fluid and shift tuning issues on the gasser 8sp, and typical chevy lean at the rear suspension on all. 145k on mine and one tow. Computer glitch buggins, could only be cleared at the dealer, no actual issue to repair. Def system cpu went ape****. Otherwise, ive had one subaru need two tows, and another need one. I doubt ill get another gm product, but ive had nothing but a great experience with mine so far, save for the general lack of knowledge of the lwn diesel engine by shops and dealers alike.

Default Here’s Why The 2022 Chevy Colorado Trail Boss Package Isn’t Available

Here’s Why The 2022 Chevy Colorado Trail Boss Package Isn’t Available

Quote:
As reported last week, the all-new Trail Boss Package for the 2022 Chevy Colorado is currently unavailable to order. Now, We have learned why the package is no longer available.

According to sources, the Trail Boss package for the 2022 Chevy Colorado proved to be so popular, General Motors received three times as many orders as was expected for the entire model year in just one month. Due to this overwhelming demand, the automaker currently lacks the supply to fulfill all the orders.

As a result, some 2022 Chevy Colorado who optioned in the Trail Boss package will have their vehicle rebuilt without the package, assuming they still want their truck. As a reminder, the Trail Boss package for the 2022 Chevy Colorado is tagged with RPO code PEC and includes the following content (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):

Black tailgate lettering (RPO SB9)
Black Colorado emblems (RPO SMG)
Red recovery hooks (RPO W0H)
Performance Mid Skid Plate (RPO SIR)
Front 1-inch Leveling Kit (RPO SQS)
17-inch High gloss Black wheels (RPO SE0) Performance Front Skid Plate (RPO SIQ)

The Trail Boss package was previously offered on Colorado LT and Z71 trim levels when equipped with four-wheel drive. The package was also offered in conjunction with all three engine options, including the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGZ gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engine, and 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine.

However, as reported previously, the 2022 Chevy Colorado is currently not available with the 2.5L I4 LCV as a result of a parts constraint.

To note, General Motors showcased a unique 2022 Chevy Colorado Z71 with the Trail Boss package at the recent 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The pickup also featured a number of Chevrolet Accessories, such as the 1-inch front leveling kit, underbody skid plates, red recovery hooks, and 17-inch ZR2 wheels finished in black, plus a rooftop tent from Freespirit Recreation.

Well, those red tow hooks are important. What am I supposed to do, go to costco with black hooks?
