$1,100 more for base V6 (+19hp, -14lb-ft torque) and AWD...for those that need AWD I guess.
The I4 turbo would be more fun with more torque, less weight, and RWD.

I think this refreshed IS looks great. It was very much overshadowed by the TLX launch. I think the TLX Type S was overhyped and now under delivering. Even with it's older platform, the refresh makes it a better buy. I hope they make the ISF version.

Yep, I've mentioned on that TLX thread there was nothing to see from the start. Honda has failed so many times at so many levels at making performance cars for us I don't even own a Honda now besides a portable generator (which has a safety fire recall I've not been able to get repaired yet). I'm real excited Toyota has put effort to kind of get back into the game.

Just this past Saturday 10/3/20 I was in Gatlinburg, TN and I heard a rumble of a V8 drive by me that sounded, well odd/exotic... but saw a Lexus coupe with the badge IS 500 on the rear end and was totally confused as to what I heard. My brother in-law pointed it out and said it was the Lexus rolling by. I had to look it up real quick on my phone to find out what it was lol Still had what I assumed were dealer paper plates and it was following another SUV type Lexus.

Looked really cool and sounded good to boot. Google said it supposed to have the 5.0 V8 w/ 7300 redline.

The Lexus V8 with an exhaust sounds amazing. I'm not sure how the motor differs in the current generation of 'X'500 cars, but looking on youtube for older ISF exhaust videos is ridiculous.

I love the IS-F's - wish one was available when I bought, I toyed with the idea of a 2nd gen ISF but they are too expensive for what you get on the used market (for me, anyways). I'm really looking forward to the rumors of the "IS-500" as a send off being true; Lexus makes a good sounding V8.

Quote:
The 2021 Lexus IS Is a Deftly Tuned, But Aging Sports Sedan

The compact luxury sedan market is under siege. Crossover sales are knocking down the walls, new players like Genesis and Alfa Romeo are plundering the scraps, and Tesla’s running away with most of the gold. There’s little space left for a reliable staple like the Lexus IS350.

Rather than a retreat, Lexus’ response is to make its entry less forgettable. So the company decided to launch the “Lexus Driving Signature” with the IS, its new driving character meant to make every Lexus more engaging. That means "linear operation that is faithful to driver's intentions" for braking, steering, and accelerating. Or, more succinctly, Lexus says this is track developed to be a better sports sedans. That sounds like marketing garbage, I’ll admit. In the real world, though, it’s noticeable: The IS is a much better sports sedan. I’m just not sure the rest has improved enough to stem the flow of buyers to other markets, marques, and models.

Despite Lexus’ exciting releases and boasting verbiage about the redesign, this isn’t a clean-sheet job. The 2021 IS is a substantial mid-cycle refresh that leaves most of the bones intact. That means the tight rear seating, somewhat awkward packaging, and unremarkable powertrain options carry over. Lexus changed the exterior and interior designs, but both look like alternate sketches of the 2014 car rather than appreciably newer versions.

Instead, the focus has gone towards making the lineup more accessible and more fun. The F-Sport package is now exclusive to the 350 model, instead of an optional package on all variants. More importantly, all 350s are F-Sports. Spend up for the more potent 311-hp V-6 and you automatically get the more aggressive styling and suspension of the sport model. Add the Dynamic Handling Package and you get adaptive variable suspension with Sport S and Sport S+ modes along with a limited-slip differential.

Through a quirk of preproduction packaging, my prototype tester had the adaptive suspension without the LSD, a combination that won’t be available in the U.S. production cars. Even without the differential, the IS350 F-Sport handled tight corners well. Turn in wasn’t as eager as in the sharpest sedans, but once the chassis settles it produces weighty, predictable handling and sure-footed power with help from the all-wheel-drive system. Power delivery was smooth and linear, a standout feature of the free-breathing V-6 that competes in a segment of overstressed fours.

The same old-school charm can’t be found in the transmission. All-wheel-drive models are stuck with a six-speed box that, while quick in its own right, doesn’t have much interest in entertaining you with quick-rip paddle shifts. It moves in its own time, often tripping over itself if you surprise it coming out of a corner. It’ll right itself quickly enough, but I found it hard to get into a rhythm with this gearbox on a winding road.

Settle in on a highway run and any tuning woes are quickly forgotten. Despite its newfound athletic streak, the IS350 is easily among the most serene compact sedans on sale. It skips over bumps with a well-sprung lightness, never juddering or smashing through New York’s broken streets. Noise intrusion is slim to none, the V-6 no more than a distant hum in sixth gear. Seats and stereo speakers, two consistent Lexus high points, exceed expectations. The Mark Levinson audio system will deafen you without a tinge of distortion and the seats will coddle you through the tightest bends. There’s a lot here to love.

But the redone interior comes pre-aged, its acres of dull plastics and endless logos neither charming nor particularly usable. For all the flat plastic buttons, temperature is still adjusted with a bone-headed slider. Worse still, much of the console is dedicated to the infuriating touchpad Lexus stubbornly refuses to kill. Thankfully, there is a touch screen so you can mostly dodge the Compaq-era trackpad. But there’s still not a great solution for scrolling or quick text entry.

I suspect many drivers will simply plug their phone into CarPlay and sidestep the infotainment structure altogether. It’s just notable because it speaks to the inherent compromise of this update; Lexus wants the IS to feel new, but it’s bloated with vestigial problems of an old platform. The touch screen is new, but the entire system is designed around the old, awful input method. The interior is new but stuck with the same hardpoints that made the last one feel tight and oddly shaped.

So it goes in the powertrain department. The all-wheel-drive versions have awkward center tunnel cabin protrusions to fit the hardware. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the IS300 is a good engine, but swap to the all-wheel-drive IS300 and it’s replaced by a detuned V-6. Go up a rung to the IS350 RWD and you get an eight-speed automatic. Upgrade to the all-wheel-drive version, though, and you get six gears and a slower 0-60 mph time. None of these options get you an engine as potent or efficient as the best the Germans have to offer.

That’s the problem with the IS350 as a whole: It’s expertly tuned to be an engaging sports sedan with a stellar ride, but Lexus’ engineers are working around the constraints of an old foundation. Its newfound charm can’t quite overcome that, but I’m looking forward to what Lexus does when it can match this precision-oriented tuning to a better set of parts.

That's what I did.

On paper it's a dated chassis, dated infotainment, dated engine, but I drove it back to back against several vehicles and it was the right combination for me.

Dual injection "bread and butter" Toyota V6 means it will only will need oil changes and air filters throughout it's life.

The chassis is really good, the front lower control arm bushings are too soft so they can lead to premature front tire wear, there are several aftermarket options, as well as OEM options; it's the one hard part I'll actually be addressing/changing on the car as I tend to drive more aggressively so I assume I'll see premature inner tire wear.

The 8spd is quick, not as quick as a ZF8, but it's no slouch. The 6spd in the AWD models is quick too, just not as quick as the 8spd. at 60k the Aisin boxes need a fluid flush, and it's inexpensive to have done at the dealer vs. a German car, on the order of a few hundred, I can't remember the exact number.

There is no LSD offered in the AWD models either, I don't know why the reviewer thought there was, it's only on the RWD models.

The RWD model feels better than the AWD model, the steering is sharper, the turn in is better, the front end feels lighter, but I understand why New England has exactly one RWD model rolling around in it right now; snow scares people.

Weird model/packaging quirk - RWD models do not get a heated steering wheel; Wasn't a deal breaker for me, but Toyota assumed (correctly) that there wouldn't be many (if any at all) sales of RWD vehicles in colder climates.

The cupholder location sucks for passengers, they are right where my wife wants to rest her elbow on the center console.

The Fit and Finish are up to Lexus standards, as is the audio system.

It's a super low maintenance car I don't have to worry about, that is reasonably quick, handles well, and is a very comfortable place to be; it's basically a very nice RWD V6 Camry, which is what I wanted out of a daily/road trip car this time around; wish it was a wagon with three pedals, and it had a couple more cylinders, but I'm strange like that.

Sid- Yeah, these article writer folks have too much time on their hands writing up all sort of BS confusing all the magazine spec racers. As how I was confused when these folks were raving about the FRS/BRZ when it was first released. They were saying 'it's like a Cayman' and all. I've driven plenty of Caymans and I'm like, no it's absolutely not. And ride height is low for stock, but nothing out of the ordinary for car guys like us who all drove lowered cars at some point in life.

In my mind I'm going back and forth between the RC-F and this new IS. I want clean fit and finish next and it's really between these 2 cars right now. I'm thinking since I already have a Supra I should get the sedan in RWD like yours. I think the RWD comes with staggered wheels/tires? I want that and will go aftermarket if not.

Camry has always been a solid benchmark car when it comes to quality family sedans so I have nothing against the IS being compared to a Camry with extra luxury and power.

F-sport package cars get the staggered wheels, even the AWD models did, not sure if that's the case for 2021 refresh though as I haven't spec'd one out yet; "Grecian Water" is probably my new favorite color, pretty sure they named it that because Aegean blue was already taken.

Yeah if you've already got a coupe, a sedan is nice to have, but if you don't need a sedan, a couple coupes isn't a bad thing.

Thanks, the pictures I've seen appear to have wider wheels/tires in the back so hope this is the case on the next gen.

Default 2021 Lexus TRD And Modellista IS

Quote:

The facelifted 2021 Lexus IS was unveiled in June and already TRD and Modellista are offering styling upgrades.

Starting with TRD, it has launched a new front splitter that can be finished in black or painted body color. As standard, we think the updated IS looks pretty aggressive, but this new splitter makes it even more striking.

Elsewhere, TRD has designed aerodynamic wing mirror covers, new side skirts, a sports muffler and a custom rear diffuser.

TRD is also offering unique 20-inch forged aluminum wheels alongside a performance damper and new bracing. Those interested in the TRD parts can check them out in the online configurator.

As for Modellista, its parts are a little more subtle. At the front, there are new splitter add-ons that give the car some added style without being as eye-catching as the TRD splitter. Other parts include extended side skirts, a custom body-colored diffuser, a rear lip spoiler and a distinctive set of wheels.

In late September, Lexus confirmed that the 2021 IS will start at $39,000 in the U.S. The rear-wheel drive IS 300 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 241 hp, whereas the all-wheel drive version gets a 260 hp 3.5-liter V6 and the range-topping IS 350 a 3.5-liter V6 pumping out 311 hp.

I wrote a whole thing about transmission quirks by drive mode, and drivetrain performance, but there was an issue & somewhere between my phone, router & modem it was lost.
I suggest you talk to a dealer & arrange an extended test drive, or rent one on truro before you buy.
Fit & finish are amazing, RWD models have the second best auto on the market, only slightly behind the ZF8; but manual replacement it is not. And although the car handles better than it's weight would imply, the LCA issue needs to be rectified (OEM & ***1072;ftermarket solutions exists). I don't regrer buying the car, I just wish it had another pedal & two more cylinders at this curb weight.

Thanks, Sid. While I find the car attractive as far as looks (that is all I know about this new IS), I am not a sedan guy and do not foresee actually owning one.

Luxury cars to me should be AT, so I have no issue with it being AT.

Jeez how old is that interior now? I feel like I sat in a Lexus interior just like that a decade ago.

Honestly, as long as it's screwed together well that's a fine interior. For me, it's not about looks. It's about functionality followed closely by construction quality.

Sure it looks old. Subaru interiors look old too. However, only one of them rattles like a 1980 Chevy.

235/40/19? That's a small foot print for 472HP. So what's the MSRP?

Hasn't been announced yet. Likely soon given they go on sale in the fall. That press release is from March and the launch edition is prolly all spoken for with only 500 numbered cars and a consumer base hell bent on buying everything for speculation.
