I think in time, maybe 5-10 years we will see massive leaps in battery tech in terms of weight and range. I wouldn't be surprised if we have 600-700 range vehicles that realistically get 400-500 with all accessories running and freeway travel.

On mine I've had to drive it, what was the Hunt for October quote....

And the only way we can get you that far north is to strip it down and turn it into a flying gas can.

Get down to 10% range, whole dash looks like the Starship Enterprise, turn off heat/AC, etc. The range they quote is always bs to me. That's ideal circumstances and the streets never are. That's why I recommend them for DD/commuter. I'm not dealing with it going out of town, nor for "spirited" driving. We are years away from either IMO. I'll take the lower range, cheaper car, for local duty only. They excel at this, but not a 50k car. A 20-30k car, yes.

For what it's worth, I drive at least once a year from Detroit area to Raleigh NC and back, often at Thanksgiving. I typically stop at a hotel with free charging in Charleston WV. I usually have to stop every 2ish hours to charge, some of which is due to the spacing of Superchargers.

The charging might be 120-150 miles apart, so if you can go 200 miles by running down to 5-10% battery while driving "normally" through the mountains... you're stopping every 120-150 miles. Especially since you can't realistically charge higher than 80-90% at a supercharger.

This is for a 2019 Model 3 long range AWD with the 18" wheels and no aero covers, nominally rated at 310 miles when new.

If there were fast chargers every 10-20 miles you would have more flexibility to go longer between fast charges but that's now how they're spaced. Also the slowing charging rate as the battery fills up also creates the incentive to stop more frequently (keep it between 20 and 70-80% charge).

Thats interesting. We drive from Greenville SC to Onstead Michigan once a year. We just went there in July and we had to stop 4 times we drive all the way with my 2 little kids.

I think we got 270wh/mile in My 2018 Model 3 Performance, lowered on springs with aftermarket wheels.

We drove last week to Hilton Head and we took the ICE car and I hate it. It is only 4 hours away but the stops for gas and food were not great. The bathrooms were nasty and it was not a pleasant road trip. Autopilot really makes a huge difference. I cannot blame the bad stops on the car but the superchargers location that I been too have been on good locations.

Time > comfort (as far as stops go). Adding on an additional 2 hours to the trip sounds miserable when you're driving ~10 hours already.

I suppose I'm not picky and I always eat in the car to minimize travel time. Gas stations are hardly the most offensive places I've been

Autopilot would be cool, but I'm not trusting enough of that system yet. When they drop the "your hands have to be on the steering wheel" and "you still need to pay attn" stuff (meaning when it gets really good) I'll be happy to use something like that.

Looking at our monthly trip, we may be able to make it on a single charge with the model we are looking at (305 mile EPA range), but even if we do need to stop I checked and there are 4 50+KWH stops (3 of them are 150 KW), so a 15-20 minute break at the 1/2 way point is what we typically do anyways.

There will be a charger at our destination.

I will say 50% less in our region (where it doesn't get that cold) really seems like a worse case scenario. I am expecting to get 75%-80% range in our 60 degree average.

how many times do you have to stop for only a short 4 hour trip?

if this happens, then they would have done what 95% of all ICE cars cannot and this WILL change minds. I have zero doubt. Being able to go further than a tank of gas will 'change everything'.

you don't add 2 hours at all if you have kids. You maybe would add 45 minutes. You have to stop and feed them lol. The force stops work for us because you get some time to recharge and you feel fairly good after driving for that long. Also, again because of little kids the stops take even longer than what it takes the car to charge. I trust autopilot on the highway.

I picked up my Plaid yesterday and I am super happy. The car is a beast and way nicer than the Model 3. The interior remind of the Lexus IS-F and GS-F, dark with carbon and black leather.

I spent a total 1.5 hours with a 3 page check list going over the car with my wife. The car was dirty and had bunch of glue in lots of places. The car needs it a good detail because I also found some rail rust on the trunk. All the gaps were perfect other than the hatch that seems to be off by a few millimeters. I also found some tiny damage on one of the corners of my door handles. There was a small paint chip on one of the insides of the door and little spec of dirty on the roof pillars. One head light also seems to stick out a little more than the other one. The interior was perfect, we couldn't find anything wrong.

Tesla took the car back after we looked at it and they had the car detail and fixed the paint chip. I feel like the car is really well built after we spend 1.5 hours putting the car under the microscope.

The car feels solid and it is super quiet compared to my Model 3. It is kind of weird when you close the door it feels like you are going into a quiet room. The air suspensions is amazing the ride quality is superb. South Carolina roads are **** and the suspension kept showing up messages about changing ride height and doing adjustments for comfort. The "Yoke" I only have driven the car for 2.5 hours and it feels good and I think I will get use to it weekly. I did make contact the buttons on the yoke by mistake many times. I assume with time I will get better at it? I found myself reaching for the turn signal level. I also found myself looking and the screen for the speed because I was used to the Model 3.

It seems that the Doge Charge crowd is very aware of the Plaid. One guy gave us thumbs up and another hellcat on the highway really wanted to race me; he was revving his car and driving like an idiot. When we got home we went to my in-laws to get the kids and I show them the car. They liked the car and showed my father in-law the gap of the hatch, he said let me show you something. He showed me his 2021 F-350 Lariat that he just got, I assume a $80k truck and his bed on one side was flush with the cabin and on other side it was off by a lot maybe 1". I need to use a straight next time so is easier to see how off it is. He just said don't worry enjoy the car.

I am super happy with the car, we did two pulls and the car pulls like a train. For fun I plotted the same route that I posted the other day with my Model 3 just to see how many superchargers stops would I have to do. This is with the Plaid starting at 90% SOC and I think the Model 3 Performance was at 85% SOC. By the way I trade-in my Model 3 for $3,500 less than I paid for 3 years ago and 21.5K miles. The insurance for the Plaid and another ICE car was $585 for 6 months like 10 bucks a month more than my Model 3.

In all I love the car and I am super exited. I am trying to get an appoint to get PPF and I soon as I do I will take it to the drag strip and later I will get some wheels and brakes upgrade and take it to road coarse and take it to the tail of the dragon.

TotD in a Plaid sounds like a recipe for vomit to me.

Look up Shady Valley, TN. Way fewer people. Great little road along US 421 on both sides of the valley.

Congrats on the new ride.

Thanks guys. Sure if I head that way I will hit you up, my in-laws just sold their house and they are moving down but they still have a cabin up north. I haven't driven the car at all, is just sitting in the garage until the 13th to get PPF installed .

Juan it looks like realistically the road trip time estimate is about the same? you've got one less stop on the Plaid but the stops on the Model S take longer because the Plaid is less energy efficient and needs more time to get the same number of miles. Of course real world depends on how long the actual stops are due to eating etc. Maybe a Long Range with the smaller wheels would do a bit better.

Seems like there is a natural limit to how fast you can road trip without a step change in infrastructure availability or high speed range/efficiency.

I think on the way back from Charlotte I was averaging 80mph and the consumption says 300Wh/mile, on my Model 3 which was lowered on my trip to Michigan the consumption was 270Wh/mile also at around 80mph.

The Model S LR is only suppose to get 9 more miles of range than mine. I am planning on getting lighter wheels and I could change the lowering links to lower it another 10-5 millimeters and see what it does. Real world we probably will stop 4 times .

The Plaid at 450V charges faster than a Taycan on a 350KW Ionity charger when you compare EPA range added per charge time:

Did anyone buy some more TSLA ?

I took my car to the 1/8th mile and it run 6.1 without launch mode or dragstrip mode.. I only got two passes

So far I have been very impressed with the car and the efficiency is fantastic. It is almost on part with my Model 3 and is running 50mm wider tires on the rear and they are summer tires. The 292Wh/mile includes a few launches, the passes at strip, a sprinted run though some back roads in sport mode "aka Taycan mode" and some highway driving at an average of 76mph I think. I wish the trip counter displayed the average speed.

I saw a recent range test of the Taycan Grand Turismo 4 and it was only getting 320Wh/mi at constant 70mph but in colder weather.

and wow:

Looks like you picked up a little over 25mph in the 1/8mi going from the M3P to the MSPL.

Haven't stopped buying in 9 years. Last buy 2 weeks ago. Hope the schadenfreude doesn't hurt my karma. Just kidding, karma doesn't exist.
