As far as a cheap kayak, you can get a new Pelican Trailblazer for $199 from Dicks, and I'm sure cheaper ones are out there on craigslist. Not a bad way to dip your toe in the paddling water for not much money.

Sweet, thank you.

That was what I was hoping to hear. There is a retailer that does demo days, but the next one is in like 2 months, and I dont plan on waiting that long to buy a low-end kayak. (Also their cheapest model is double the price of entry level Pelicans)
I think our local sporting goods store has the Trailblazer model with some "Fishing" equipment bolted on for an additional $30. That's the ticket I am thinking.
Again, thanks for the response.

Sure thing! I was thinking about one of those as well, since they're pretty light, and the poly hull can take a beating. Alas, I'm just a canoe guy at heart.

Wife and I rented Perception Pescador 10 Sports this weekend. Really really enjoyed being out on the Lake.
I think I'll save for a roof rack for reasonable transportation options, then spring for a nice Yak.
Will report back soon.

Default Official Kayak & Canoe Thread

Bought the wife and I some crossover kayaks. We live 15mins from lakes and about 45mins from a class 2/3 river. Trying to decide on paddles. Have it narrowed down to a Werner Sherpa paddle. Should I get fiberglass blades or spend the extra $35 for carbon fiber blades?

It's made by a company in NZ and is quality as ****. All plastic and rubber, so no rusting or popping tires. They even make special add-on wheels for sand.

ACK'll also give you 15% off just signing up for their monthly emails, so they're cheaper than amazon (which is where I'd usually go).
I finally had a chance to test the sand wheels out on Friday during a paddle in some tidal marshes along LI Sound. They worked amazingly well -- I'm so glad I got that cart.

Honestly not a clue. Someone stole two of my boats recently. A CD Extreme HV in Kevlar ultralight and my Dagger Atlantis. Pretty pissed.

My son has decided he's done with the canoe now that he's had a taste of going on a few nearshore fishing trips. Anybody know what an 11 ft Sportspal goes for? They're pretty neat, made out of aircraft aluminum and you can mount a small outboard on them. I couldn't find anything to reference on used ones.

It's a heavily used aluminum canoe, so you could maybe try throwing it on CL for a couple hundred bucks to see if anyone bites. But even at that price you might need to throw in your life vests and paddles (and a $50 bill ) to get any takers.

I see they put the logo on properly for when you drunkenly attempt to piss over the side...

Or when it's on top of the car.

Took my uncle's Native Ultimate 12 that he's trying to get me to buy off him out this weekend. I found it kinda heavy (it's a 53lb boat) and a bit slow. It's one of the skeg models and currently is missing said skeg, so I'm wondering if that lessened my enjoyment. I'm not an avid kayaker my any means, but I felt a lot more beat up with that than I ever have in any boats in the past, even taking my parents' old Pelican divorce kayak solo. Still, it's a nice open fishing/gear hauling boat which is a definite plus.

For the record, my parents upgraded to Pungo 120 ultralights which I can never use again, because I'll get badly spoiled.

The Field & Stream Shadow Caster I picked up has been great (besides the weight). But I still find myself using my old $250 Future Beach 124 more. Now with more ebay rod holders!

Planning a Delaware Water Gap overnight paddle for sometime this year. Looking to put in around Dinghmans Ferry, paddle halfway and camp overnight, and then continue on to the Kittatinny Park stop near Rt. 80.

Strider, Do you bring two vehicles, or schedule a pick-up with a third party?

I just ordered a roof rack for my Wrangler so I could carry my kayak. Looking forward to fishing some feeder creeks off of Lake Somerville, TX later this month. Hybrid Bass should be making runs about now.

(Ended up buying a used Perception Pescador Pro 120)
