A longer kayak will always track better, as in easier to maintain a straight line, so more of each stroke goes into propelling you straight ahead.

I have (2) Ocean Kayaks: 11' Scrambler & 9' Frenzy....the 9' is definitely more stable from a tipping perspective, but requires effort to keep up with the other kayak. At some point, wifey & I will replace the 9 with another 11-13 footer.

I'm almost jealous.

But it's still you, so.....no. Enjoy

Q: what's the difference between Trident & Prowler lineup?

I asked that exact question:

Quote:
Hey John,

Thanks for the email. The Trident is the new name for they Prowler. They are slowly phasing that Prowler name out so some boats are called Prowler Trident and others just Trident. The hull shape is the same, the Tridents have some upgraded molding patterns in the cockpit. We do have a Prowler 13 Angler blemished kayak on sale in the outlet. I've attached a link below for that boat. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

What is OT's view on tandem kayaks? My gf and I had kayaks a couple years back and sold them when we moved. I have been thinking of picking up one tandem kayak so we can get back out on the water.

The nickname for a tandem kayak is "divorce canoe."

Does that answer your question?

After a quick google search, yes. I was thinking of the tandem since my girlfriend is very petite, I was just going to do most of the paddling. I guess it's not such a good idea. Thanks for the heads up

After paddling back in on the Chesapeake in 1ft chop in my Ocean Kayak, I fell in love with SOTs. I decided to put my two SINKs up for sale on Craigslist, and ended up selling them within an hour for $100 more than my price listed (people were competing for them), and $250 more than what I bought them in October!

I'm ordering another Ocean Kayak today, they're so much better than sitting in a hot plastic tub all day. Plus, I have so much space for gear, and I can stand up (it's going to take practice):

I know OT doesnt Subaru but do you ladies have any recommendations for a roof rack for a 2006 WRX? I want to purchase a kayak in the near future and it would be cool to have the bike kit also for my mnt bike.

I'd love to, but I only have one of those cheap foam block roof carriers. I wouldn't feel comfortable driving on anything other than local roads with it on the car. Once we get a real roofrack we'll definitely go for a paddle together.

Well, except the these rarely flip, and if they do, it's no big deal. I can stand, jump off, etc. and simply climb back on.

I used Thule on mine, and it carried over to my next car.

Psssssht. Don't sweat it too much -- assuming you're using cam buckle straps, you'd be amazed at how secure your boat actually is. I used to hit 90 on the way up to Cape Cod when I still used foam blocks...

...and that was with my ****ty old 85lb Old Town.

I'd feel more comfortable if it didn't deform the steel in the roof of my 2.5i.

I have never owned a proper kayak rack. I wrap thick foam around the roof rack crossbars, and use the various tie-down points up & down the kayaks. Driven 10 hours on the Interstate with (2) on the roof, no issues.

Yeah, that's an unfortunate side effect, though you can mitigate it by using additional blocks.

And there's no way your current gen Impreza's sheet metal is as thin as my WRX's was.

If I had crossbars I wouldn't care, but my car doesn't even have that.

I'm telling you, Jim, I did it for years without permanently denting my cars' roofs. Get yourself a 3rd set of pads (i.e., you'll then have 6 individual ones) - preferably a bit longer than the ones you've got - and space them apart equally. It should take a lot of the pressure off the other 4.

I found some more recent pics from 2008 that show the 3rd set of pads in use:
